On Tuesday in Delhi, we took a cab to visit the Red Fort. When we got there, the gate was closed. The taxi driver told us that it was closed due to the Diwali festival celebration. We were confused where to go. I told him we wanted to go to the Jami Masjad, the largest mosque in India. This mosque was close by the fort. Instead the driver insisted we go to the National Museum…which he claimed was nearby the mosque. We reluctantly agreed and he started driving. Then after a few minutes, I discovered this museum was on the other side of the city. So we made him return to the Red Fort. He left us off where we were approach by the bicycle rickshaw drivers. They told us we had come to the wrong ... read more

As I walked with the demonstrators, an American man on the road paused to tell us we were wasting our time and angering people. The only way to make your voice heard, according to him, is by appointment in court. Feasible, perhaps, for someone from a country where it is permissible and possible to voice your difference of opinion in a court of law. The mass of protesters, however, represented Tibetans inside of Tibet, those who have been and are still affected by Chinese rule in their country. November 3rd marked an International Day of Protest against Bombardier's involvement in the Gormo-Lhasa railway. Bombardier, a Canadian company, earlier this year signed a contract to provide China Railways with highly specialised railway coaches for the invasive railway. While the railway line is touted to bring further development ... read more

Dalai Lama: Rail Link 'Cultural Genocide' AP September 12th, 2005 HAILEY, Idaho — A rail link being built between Tibet and several major Chinese cities could lead to "cultural genocide" by luring more Chinese workers to the region, the Dalai Lama said. Tibet's spiritual leader said following a speech in Idaho Sunday that more pressure will be placed on native Tibetans by the rail line scheduled for completion in 2007. "Some kind of cultural genocide is taking place," the Dalai Lama told reporters. "In general, a railway link is very useful in order to develop, but not when politically motivated to bring about demographic change." Increasing numbers of ethnic Han Chinese have been moving to Tibet in recent years to work in construction and other booming government industries. Tibetans, working mostly in ... read more

Just a quick update for those who continue to travel with me (...thanks for the company!) I have travelled to Mcleod Ganj which is a little more north than Amritsar and the farthest north in India my travels will take me. I really love this place and can see myself coming back here again. I am staying in a dorm of six and at less than 30 ruppee a night you really can't best it...and plus I am fortunate enough to have travelled here with a guy who plays his guitar and sings us simon and garfunkel before head...lucky me! The feel here in town is different than that I have experienced yet. There are mountains around me (although nothing like that of the Everest Trek)...but the mountains are still incredibly beautiful. The air is cleaner ... read more

Entry into India from Nepal was easy, like walking from one neighbourhood to another. The only trying aspect was the frustrating slowness and pointlessness of the questions at immigration. Having just arrived in India, the only logical point I could have come from, in that small border town, was the Nepali border. Yet, the procedure entailed that very much-repeated question, "Where have you come from?" which required setting sarcasm and impatience aside, just in case this was a test. The first big city from my entry point was Lucknow, a city rife with fantastic architecture. Unfortunately, I was dropped in a run-down sort of area rife with over-priced hotels. However, on to Agra the next day, for a well-deserved detour to see one of humankind's wondrous architectural feats, the Taj Mahal. It shone, in its white-marbled ... read more

Hi, Today is our 5th and last day in Mcleod Ganj. It is located in the Himalaya mountains, the views here are magnificent. It is the exile residence of the HHDC (His Hinece Dali Lama). 99% of the tourists here and in the sorrounding villages are Israelies. The trend here is to take spiritual courses such as Yoga, Reiki, Meditation, Tibetian cooking (spiritual as well? maybe...), massage, even knitting (is it back?). Me and Ayelet went against the stream (as we did in Las Vegas, where we did not gamble even once) and did not take even one course. To compansate that, we explored the area, by foot and by vechile. The only problem with that is the weather, it is realy misleading. One wakes up in the morning, the sun is shining, no cloud in ... read more

A bit of history or guide book stuff: About 55 years ago communist China took over Tibet, and ever since China is working to destroy the independent Tibetan culture. On the way they killed many Tibetans, and in 1959 the Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lamah, decided to go in exile and try to fight for freedom from outside Tibet. India gave the him and his group political asylum, and more than that, they let them fight for their freedom (in peaceful measures only) from their new home. McLeod Ganj is the center of that Tibetan community in exile. The Dalai Lamah lives here (when he's not traveling around the world pleading for his case), and it's also the place of the headquarters of the government in exile. Many Tibetans live here, not only those that came ... read more

Yesterday we went to a movie. It was the best cinema in McLeod - the Movie Den. It looks more or less like a bus, just a bit more spacious, and even air conditioned, so no complaints about that. The quality wasn’t so great, but ok, you can manage. We watched “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, which is a really stupid movie… very good choice for this vacation here. But the highlights of the movie were the subtitles! Somebody made them by listening probably, or maybe they even have a speech recognition software? Who knows. The result was really funny! It was better than the movie itself. Two examples I put in the title of this post. When Mr. Wanka says “okky dokky”, the subtitles said “ok, donkey”… needless to say there was no donkey in ... read more

Is there some cosmic hole here, throwing you back to Israel once you step out of this bus that took you to McLeod Ganj? Wherever you go in McLeod you see Israelis, you hear Hebrew. The merchants in the shops and in the market will say some words in Hebrew as soon as they hear us talking Hebrew. Some restaurants offer menus in Hebrew. There are many adds in Hebrew in the streets, advertising courses or restaurants. And if in McLeod you feel that maybe 50% of the tourists are Israeli, it gets worse when you go to the villages of Bhagsu and Dharamkot. In Bhagsu it’s 95% Israeli. Sometime you see more Hebrew signs that English. Dharamkot is an Israeli village per se. You can probably live there quiet happily without a word in English ... read more

So far I was happy not to suffer in India, but I did hope it would improve at some point. Well, we chose to start our Indian time in McLeod Ganj because people said it was "easier", and they were right. McLeod Ganj is a small town, maybe just a big village, in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. Located in the mountains slopes, above a big valley, it offers magnificent views. It is also the home of a big Tibetan community, lead by the Dalai Lamah himself. They live here since they ran away from the occupied Tibet in 1959. And that was the tourist guide book information. What do you actually see when you get here? The first thing you see is a market, and even when you’re not in the market itself there ... read more
