It's Ashtanga, phew. As far as I can make out it's the form of yoga most closely related to 'sport'. My teacher, Rashpal, will instruct me into a pose, I'm trying to find a sense of balance and composure 'now hold for 2-3 mins' is he being funny? Nop. So I am exhausted, not really achy, more drained. My teacher also adds Hatha yoga which is about 'cleaning the inside' of your body. He talks about 7 shakras and 5 elements in the body...? A method they use is to feed a piece of string in through the nose and out through the mouth or the other nose, and then pull on both ends. I wasn't sure what to say as he was describing this. A dumb stare and a polite nod was about all I ... read more

I had lost count of the days when one morning Reeta asks if I want to go to Dharamsala. I'd said no the day before and again declined. I had spent my days between yoga sessions sat on a low-lying table they have outside the kitchen, but used as a bench, reading, writing or many times enjoying the calm of the scenery and the sound of the river. My curiosity was aroused though when I noticed they had made an extra special effort with their clothes. 'Why are you going to Dharamsala?' There had been a curfew for cars in Mcleod after 6pm because of an incident, Reeta said some Tibetans had been drinking and beat up some cops. This upset their daily routine and so were making a complaint to the local Dimaschal (the region) ... read more

Landed in Delhi without any real mishaps. Now for bus to terminal 1 for flight to Dharamsala. Visiting Delhi did not appeal to me. Siddhi yoga, the school I have signed up for is near Mcleod Ganj which according to Lonely Planet and others I've spoken to is a tourist hotspot and offers a variety of yoga schools. Delhi I've heard is 'like marmite' and didn't want to spend time not doing yoga working out if I loved it or not. Waiting for the connecting bus, 'FREE...for bonafide passengers' the sign reads. Hehe, I'm not sure i've ever seen that word used. So me being bonafide got a financially free but emotionally expensive ride. We spent most of the time on 2 wheels weaving through traffic coming to near calamitous abrupt halts or reaching new g-force ... read more

Sooo I'm off to India. And why? The simplest answer is to do yoga. I'd looked into doing an intensive course in the UK but in London the rent alone would mean I'd need to get a part time job, not ideal, and even were I to live rent free, India proves cheaper so here I am, but a month before the course actually starts. So I have 4 wks to ideally get in as much yoga as possible. And why yoga? 4 years ago, approx, I started pilates. Trying to live out some skewed 'action man' alter ego I joined the army. And has happened many times in the past I suffered badly with muscle strains; shin splints, back strains, ankles, among others and in training it was plantar fasciitis. Somehow I knew core strength ... read more

Settled in for a 10 day intensive course with OM Yoga. Didn't want to hang around Mcleod Ganj too long. It's in a nice setting and is an interesting town but really busy and noisy. I could potentially live in Mcleod and do drop in classes but met Reeta, the wife of the couple who run OM yoga, on my 1st day in Mcleod at the OM yoga studio, she tells me their Ashram is 2km away near Daal lake. It sounds nice. So I book in for a yoga class the next morning at the studio in Mcleod with the intention of signing up for a course at the Ashram. I sleep in. Weirdly knackered all yesterday and obviously the morning in question. Maybe the altitude? It's at 6,800 ft, quick reference Ben Nevis summit ... read more

My last blog got quite long and frankly, I lost interest in continuing it…possibly why I would make a horrible author. I would most likely publish the book half written! So I will clarify now, that the reason I was able to write that blog was because all these months later, I could access the sadness and pain I felt over the last year with detachment. I no longer feel sad about those events. But I also want to remember and learn from them. It is new for me to acknowledge my feelings and I am working hard at seeing them honestly and letting them go…I haven’t quite figured out how to do that yet, but I hope before my next life to at least make some progress! So that was my intention with my last ... read more

WELL HELLO PASSPORT!!!! I'm back on the road again, and this time I've got a great travel sidekick...so here we go! OK, I have lots of thoughts from our one month in India. So to avoid a babbling blog, I’ve come up with “The Travel 5s” --- Stoyan and I have been summing up thoughts/memories and organizing them neatly into groups of 5 (Yay! Organizing). This will hopefully give you a quick glimpse of all the glorious (and not so glorious) moments travel has to offer. Some Of Our Favorite Moments 1. Feeling “lost in time”. Not knowing the day of the week or the time of day (Stoy) 2. Reading books start to finish (Stoy) 3. No electronics allowed in Akshardham Temple …no cameras, no phones. Nothing. (Squirrel) 4. Sade playing on a tranquil rooftop ... read more

Hours rush into days – days merge into a new place or hours on the road in between places. Today - 12 hours on the road from Shimla to Rishikesh, yesterday Shimla, the day before 12 hours on the road between McLeod Ganj and Shimla – I don’t know the dates. McLeod Ganj is the physical and spiritual home of the Dalai Lama. He was in residence when we walked around the temple but you would never have known. It was the quietest Buddhist temple complex I have ever been to in my life and I feel it is the most important but unlike when I was in Lhasa or at Labrang with the cymbals crashing, the monks in yellow hats, the air thick with the smoke and smell from incense burning, constant chanting, the great ... read more

Dharamsala. Home of the Dalai Lama. Unfortunately I missed hearing the His Holiness speak by one day and so I by-passed Dharamsala, the city, and went a little further up to the tourist haunt that is Mcleod Ganj, or upper Dharamsala. It is swarming with tourists, but it doesn't necessarily feel that way. The beautiful Tibetan people ensure it keeps a certain calm and tranquility about the place, amidst the chaos. For such a small place, there is a lot going on. There are as many 'tourist' bus operating companies and trekking companies as you would find in any bigger city and they're all crammed into three narrow 'main' streets, in amongst the Tibetan traders, small restaurants and clothing stores (there is surprisingly a lot of these too). You share the small narrow streets with buses ... read more
