So we're now in Palolem, Goa. Described in the book as "lined with a swaying curtain of coconut palms, the bay forms a perfect curve of golden sand" it wasn't quite what we expected. The book didn't mention the cows ... and where there's cows, there's cowpats......... Anyway, let's backtrack. We arrived in Jaisalmer from Jodhpur (where you couldn't even see the station floor due to people sleeping everywhere en route to a religious festival) and had a free bus waiting as we'd booked accommodation and camel safari by email. Jaisalmer is very much a tourist town and there are now restrictions in place so that tourists can't get approached by guys trying to sell their guest houses as soon as they step off the train, so there is a line up of the usual suspects ... read more

Palolem is famous for backpackers and although its low season most of the hostels are already full up. I'm staying in a little cottage by the beach its in it's own private area and has private access to the beach and a fab reastaurant that does alot of european foods. The beach is gorgeous and the weather is fab thanks to the monsoon leaving early. Therere lots of Indians who travel from all over India to Palolem, to sell their hand made items and other goods. They are a far cry from the pushy ones in the main cities, they do all ask the same questions in the same order which can be funny but it's good to chat with them as one of the girls, I chatted with today was from Jaipur a place I ... read more

Arrived at Goa airport quite tired after our very early start, and anxious about returning to India. Pleasantly surprised though to find that Goa isn't really much like the rest of India, being owned by Portugal until quite recently. A nice easy bus journey got us from the airport to the beach resort we wanted to stay in, and a bout of healthy haggling got us the best rates in any hotel so far. After being offered 250 Rupees per night (about 3 pounds) we managed to get the price down to a much more affordable 200 Rupees (or 2 pound 50). This deal had to be conducted under a nearby tree so that other guests couldn't hear our amazing deals. We were only given this deal under the condition that we wouldn't divulge the details ... read more

One of Goas most idyllic beaches, home to friendly dogs and cows chilling by the lifeguard tower at sunset, kind of like floozy girls on the beaches in Cornwall. Low season. Not much happening. Taxi drivers thinking up all they can for means of conversation on the, at least 6 ties a day, walk to and from the beach, consisting of ‘Taxi?’ ‘No thank you’ ‘Maybe tomorrow..’ If they hoped I’d get the message and bugger off by the 6th day, I’d hoped they’d get the message and bugger off asking by the 7th. Neither of us did. In any case, I got the bus. Whilst I was there, however, as well as walking the 20m to and from the beach each day- thorough exercise I think- I also eat great food, drank some yellow water ... read more

We are writing this entry from a secret location and at much risk. We are fugatives, on the run, and this may be the last time we can contact you!! Lucy has stolen a book from the library on the beach!!! We have managed to avoid the feds so far, but who knows how long for.... We last left you after arriving in Baga (Goa). Baga, along with calangute, is kinda considered the "Thompson Package spot'. We expected it to be busier, but it was pretty quiet. Mind you, we did notice 15 Coaches of people leaving hurridly just after we arrived (Coincidence??). On the second morning we decided to walk along the entire stretch of beach between the 2 resorts (Baga and Calangute). This turned out to be pretty eventful. Early into our walk, I ... read more

Hi all I've spent a few days here now, and it's all very relaxing. It's by far the most picturesque beach I've been to so far, with palm trees all along, and all the restraunts, bars and beach shacks don't ruin it by any stretch of the imagination, in fact I find it gives it a travellers atmosphere. As in Varkala we've met some new travellers, and 2 of them, Luke and John (easy to remember for me) happen to be booked on the same train to Mumbai as us. We've also met up with Ed from the TEFL week and a couple of his friends, so it's a healthy sized group. As yet I haven't taken any photos here, partly because of my memory, but also because any photos will look similar to my photos ... read more

Hi again, I'm currently in Palolem, supposedly the most idillyc beach in Goa and it's not so much a party place like northern Goa, it's got more chilled out beach bars and restaurants like Varkala. We've found a good place to say and that's about all there is to say, I've only just got here. I have treated myself to handing in a load of clothes to a laundry woman who has a machine, I feel like I haven't worn any properly clean clothes for ages, and it's almost a fortnight since I even handwashed them, and I couldn't be bothered to hand wash almost everything I had with me. After Periyar we went to Kochi. The bus took about 7 hours which was much longer than expected. In Kochi we spent 2 nights, although the ... read more

After getting in rather late from Kanyakumari, and having to get up early the next morning, I was not really in the mood for the 20hr train journey up to Goa. Last time I was in India, I'd done some trains, but splashed out on the more deluxe 2-tier AC class. This time, in search of a more authentic experience, I opted for regular sleeper class at a quarter of the price. The comfort, though not as high, was still sufficient and the locals that ride in this class make for a much more interesting journey. Watching an Indian mother clump balls of rice and curry together out of a banana leaf and feed her three hungry chick-like kids by hand is something you'd only see on a train ride in India. And, as with ... read more

I don't know what I was thinking when I decided to change my plans and go south. I had originally planned on just going north from Agra, which makes logical and practical sense, but the beach was screaming my name, so I had to follow the voices in my head and get on a 36-hour train ride to Goa, one of the smallest states in India. Goa has an interesting history, as it was the first region in India to get colonized in 1510 and the last to be given independence in 1961 by the Portuguese; inbetween all this, the British and French colonized and eventually gave independence to the rest in the subcontinent. The 48-hour train ride from China to Tibet was not so bad b/c the train is pretty pimped out compared to the ... read more

As well as hooking up with James again I’ve also met these 3 really cool Israeli girls...there's Maya from Tel Aviv, Dana from Haifa and Tsipora (Tsipi) from Jerusalem and I have been learning all about how it is to live in the Middle East conflicts, especially as national service is compulsory so at the age of 18 they are given their own gun, taught combat and trained to "defend" Israel. None of the girls believe in National Service and it sound extremely difficult to be thrown into it especially when coming from a religious background... Anyway today was Passover and the girls had very kindly invited myself and James to join them that evening at their Passover dinner but before this we had the hair ceremony! Tsipi had had her long dreadlocks for some time ... read more
