One thing a year in Taiwan has taught me is to abandon all grammatically correct ways of speaking. Of course, it's always easier to communicate with someone with little knowledge of English when you speak in a way they can identify with. India, i keep forgetting, is an English speaking country as most children who attend school will automatically learn it. And here, most (if not all) signs are written in English. A huge change for me. About a week ago, a few friends and I met a little girl at the train station. It went like this: Firstly, her dad (in true dad form) was noticed pushing his daughter over to us to "practice her English" and then the conversation proceeded. We were so focused on making sure the girl understood us, felt comfortable...etc. ... read more

We woke early for our cycle towards Bodh Gaya in Bihar state. But breakfast on the balcony was not as planned since it was raining again, not a good omen. By the time we actually loaded up the bikes ready to push them up and out of the labyrinth of lanes in the old city the rain was just lightly drizzling and all the mud and various droppings in the lanes meant we had to be really careful. We had just got out of the lanes and were cycling along the wet street when I looked up to see Robin screeching on the brakes swerving and falling and a very small Indian man go flying through the air, landing about 2 metres away in the muddy street. Luckily nobody was hurt but the little Indian guy ... read more

We're in Bodhgaya, the land of the Buddha- but after Rajasthan we also went to Agra and Varanasi. Annoyingly we got stuck for days in Agra as we couldnt get a train out and besides the Taj Mahal there's not much to see, just a big industrial town- spent a lot of time watching TV in our ridiculously cheap room- at least we saved some money. But we did have one interesting day when two random guys took us to watermelon farmland on their scooter- was extremely dodgy riding through Indian traffic, I felt very close to the floor! Next went to Varanasi- a very holy city, as it's on the bank of the Ganges- went on a boat ride and saw the burning Ghats (where they burn dead bodies) felt very intrusive, was a bit ... read more

After an excriciatingly hectic trip back to NJP station from Darjeeling (see nick's comment in last blog), we were fast reminded of Kolkata's atmosphere as we took an autorickshaw from Sealdeh station back to our guest house in Sudder st. We got a half room for the day and sat in a cafe with a big breakfast. After buying a few things back at the market and picking up my suit (which cost around $100 in case anyone heard any different), the afternoon came very quickly, and we liked the idea of waiting for our train at the station rather than in traffic, so we packed our dinner and jumped in a taxi. It was good to be at the station early, but perhaps 2 1/2 hours early was a tad excessive. We found a very ... read more

namaste... in case you are wondering about the names... perpetual wanderer - one who continues to be reborn in the cycle of suffering known as samsara, the goal of life is liberation from this cycle thru the attainment of the ultimate perfection, or as you may know it, nirvana, heaven... kala baba - a nickname given to me, suprisingly, by many here in india already but also by a dear friend in canada... it literally means black grandfather... i have only black clothes with me on the road (more or less) as it is much easier to maintain them while travelling, hence the black... the grandfather reference is given to one who is believed to have been around for many live, therefore very old, and is living a spiritual life... hence, kala baba - a perpetual ... read more

We're in India. To amuse myself I'm playing a game. Count the number of men sh#tting by the side of the railway track. At first I though it was some sort of national sport played in the cricket off season but soon realised that the reason may be one of bad timing. The areas near the tracks form a natural barrier from the road where a guy can relax with nature. The bloke is halfway through his morning function having forgotten that the only train of the day is due. The man has to squatt there brave faced while 2000 bored people point at him thankful of some distraction. Still can't work out if the facial expression is embarrasment or simple straining. We've bought an old Enfield Motorbike. No sure the wisdom of the plan but ... read more

The next stop on our journey in the sweltering heat was Bodghaya, a dusty little town in the middle of the fields about 8 hours or so North East of Calcutta. There isn't really much to Bodhgaya, but it's fame comes from being the home to the Bodhi tree under which Prince Siddhartha meditated, became enlightened, and became the buddha. Today the tree is a mere grandson of the original, but the complex that houses it, it's accompanying temple, and the surrounding gardens are equally as peaceful as they must have been all those years ago, despite the hoardes of tourists that visit today. The town is also home to a number of temples of monasteries from Buddhist countries around the world, each in their national style, which gives it a wee taste of international flavour ... read more
