After my stint in Bangkok, it was a flight over to Hong Kong: and how I love in-flight movies. I managed to fit in Beauty and the Beast, which is one of the coolest movies ever, and the beginning of Alice in Wonderland. But really, the coolest feature of the back-of-the-seat TV screens that were on the plane was the ability to watch take off and landing from a pilot eye view. Turns out they actually do know what they're doing. Anyway, I arrived at Hong Kong airport, but unfortunately my sister Bindy's plane had been delayed for an hour, so the grand plans of meeting each other in Hong Kong customs were soon dashed. Not that it would have worked anyway, for some reason customs didn't have any people staffing it, and when I walked ... read more

It's dawn and I didn't think to bring any Chinese currency and I'm not sure I"m hungry, but they took my water bottle off me from the plane, so I may use my US$3 that I found I had and buy me some water...this internet use is a freebie at a kiosk...Phill - I took a photo of a sign a ... read more

Hello all. Here's your first bulletin from Hong Kong. We have now got our 90 day visas for China and have been biding our time doing touristical things. Staying on Lantau Island which is off HK Island by 30 min ferry ride. An excellent antidote to the noise and bustle of HK and a fraction of the cost. Gawped at Big Bhuddas on the day that we arrived but was so tired that I fell asleep everytime that I sat down. Visited the tiny fishing village of Tai O on Lantau where the livelihood seems to involve drying unidentified fish parts and making industrial quantities of evil smelling shrimp paste. Lunch there was a step too far, so took an exciting ferry trip round to another town to catch the bus back to Mai Wo. Got ... read more

I thought it had been a while since my last entry, and glancing back at my diary…I’ve been quite busy! Things just haven’t stopped here! Here’s a rundown on the events of the last ten days or so! I have been to a Korean BBQ with two friends from uni. This was pretty cool, where you sit round a table with a flame/grill in the middle, and you collect raw meats/fish/vegetables, and rice/soup, and you chat away whilst you cook whatever you fancy eating next. I have found a good swimming pool in Kowloon park, which is a lovely place, and there is an outdoor pool for sunny days. We had a girly night at the cinema too - to see Hairspray, which was interesting! This is all mid-week stuff seeing as I am now working ... read more

We left wet wet Chengdu in the morning and headed to the airport in a taxi which took us about 20 mins to hail. You see empty taxis all day long until you actually want one...crazy. Anyway the flight to Schenzhen (just outside Hong Kong, it's cheaper!) was pretty normal and our transfer to kowloon where we would get the metro to our apartment was simple, even customs was a breeze. We arrived at our metro stop managing to resist the urge to go one stop more to Hong Kong Disney Land and got a bus to cousin Roberts apartment which he very kindly let us have use of whilst he was away, we just crashed on the sofa. We were in Hong Kong for 5 days so allowed ourselves to relax. We were staying in ... read more

We took a day trip to beautiful Lantau Island. It was a nice break from the crowds and hustle of Hong Kong. There are supposed to be trams that take you up the mountain to the Po Lin Monastery and "The Big Buddha" but they were inoperative when we were there. We took a bus up from the MTR terminal and then rode a taxi to the ferry landing, going back to Kowloon by water.... read more

The Hong Kong time now is 4:30 p.m. and I was in gate 35 waiting for boarding. The weather seemed to be very fine with sunlight shining on the cocourt and my long-waited journey to New Zealand will be soon to start. When it is backdated to the same day of last year, I would never think of bringing myself to rambling road because I believe teaching would be my life-long career. It's funny that I finally picked up the courage existed somewhere bringing me to a really strange country to me - New Zealand... read more

Note: After I posted the last entry, M was disappointed that I was using the same initial to refer to multiple people. Therefore, to clearly identify her going forward, she "insists" on being referred to as something different. We have agreed on "MMM" which stands for M Mei Mei, which means "little sister" in Chinese. We stayed at J's new apartment for two nights. She had some extra space at her apartment as she awaits her new roommate P to arrive. J's place was very modern, clean and nice! Her rent is pretty comparable to a new SoMa apartment, if not more. Yikes! Disappointed with our shopping experience, MMM and I went over to Launtau Island to check out Giant Tian Tan Buddha, which is the world's largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha. A few weeks ago, ... read more

Well, today was Disney day. Did the whole park, including the teacups, Cinderella's carousel, and Dumbo all twice. Caught a lot of the shows, and even got "interacted with" by Stitch, which was cool in retrospect, but a bit embarrassing when it happened. This was during a show--Stitch was an animation. I'm assuming it uses the same technology as fix8. Despite all the walking I've been doing lately, I can feel today in the knees and feet. Expect pictures on Shutterfly at some point soon. During the shows, Mickey and company spoke in Cantonese. It was pretty cool. One land in the park had been taken over by pirates, and I think today was the last day for that. I'm guessing that it's just a complete coincidence that the date coincides with the 10 year anniversary ... read more

Ok, the long-awaited Hong Kong blast....here at last.. Only, sadly, not as exciting as the last one. Or any of the ones before that. But, I changed the font and the font size (can you see it or is it just on my end???) for your viewing pleasure. OH, that's right, and for my writing enjoyment. :-) So, here goes it, despite the length...... After leaving the Peens, I flew directly to Lantau Island, HK territory's biggest island, where, conveniently, a friend of mine I had met back in the tsunami-relief days (spring of 2005) lives part of the year and just so happened to be there as I was passing through. Incidentally, she also spent a couple of weeks in March in the Philippines volunteering with Hands On. I spent nearly 2 weeks with her ... read more
