A nice last day in Hong Kong. I had looked in the Lonely Planet for travel companies who did day trips around the islands, one of the moderately priced ones was based in the very posh Sheraton Hotel almost next door to my hostel. I had booked the dolphin trip through them and today was a day trip round Lantau Island with my roommate Anna. The tour company was called Splendid Tours and Travel, and it was indeed splendid! (We all had badges saying Splendid on them, I felt splendid all day) First was a brief stop to view 2 bridges connecting the Hong Kong islands. We then carried on over some very hilly roads to a beautiful sandy beach. I never imagined the great metropolis of Hong Kong would have and beaches let alone beautiful ... read more

Disneyland spells M A G I C. Yes, Virginia, Disneyland is magical for people of all ages. Two years in a row, and we still manage to have fun and feel the magic of Hongkong Disneyland. To prep for a 12 hour Disney adventure, we made sure the kids slept well and had a hearty breakfast to start the day right. Naturally, we went to their choice eating place....... McDonald's. Good thing there was one just a block off our hotel. Unlike yesterday, I had a full breakfast rather than settle for just my usual cup of coffee. In fact, everyone enjoyed a full breakfast. From Yau Ma Tei Station, we took the metro and got off at the Lai King Interchange to ride all the way to Sunny Bay. From here, we took the Disneyland ... read more

Well, I'm here, at Hong Kong Airport waiting for my flight to Rome. I made it out of Shenzhen alive; not that I had any doubts. I did think I may do some damage to my credit card or at least my entire trips slush fund, but I think I did okay. I had to send home by sea mail 2 boxes weighing 16kgs which were completely packed to the brim with my new clothes. I reckon I spent about $1.8 to $2k in tailored clothing. Approx. 32 pieces. which included, 3 suits each with 2 pairs of trousers, 3 evening gowns, 13 dresses, 8 bodysuits, 3 coats, 1 with cashmere the other with cashmere/wool blend and leather, just to name a few. Not everything I was 100% happy with but I reckon I didn't do ... read more

Well, we're here writing our last blog entry at Hong Kong international airport (our flight is a bit delayed!). How strange to be heading back home to "normal" life after so long away. Luckily we have exciting things to look forward to when we head back...Anita's wedding, Christmas oh and planning a wedding and buying a house! Hong Kong has been fun. We easily got into the way of life of wandering through shopping centres at 11pm at night, buying random things at night markets (we hope people like their christmas presents!!) and eating seafood at restaurants on street corners. We also managed to fit in a few sites aswell - views of the whole of Hong Kong from the Peak, temples, Chinese walled garden (once we actually found the right garden), the giant Buddha and ... read more

Entry from Rich (05/12/08 8.00 p.m.) I am writing this entry from Governor Robinson’s hostel in Perth. We have had a very busy few days and not much time to write blog entries so this one is a bit of a catch up. On Wednesday we went to Cheung Chau, one of the outlying islands in Hong Kong. The only means of transport to Cheung Chau is a ferry ride from the central ferry pier. This journey didn’t agree with Jules but once we reached the island we spent a very relaxing day exploring the quiet streets, beaches and paths up to observation points. There are no cars on Cheung Chau but there are lots of bikes and some small delivery vehicles which seem to be powered by lawnmower engines. The emergency services use scaled down ... read more

Hey everyone Yesterday and Today were fantastic! I started back in Mongkok because i decided to buy the laptop i saw, which is amazing!!!!!! Then i travelled to the centre of Hong Kong island to catch a ferry to Lantau Island. Lantau's famous for having the worlds largest (85ft/34m High) seated outdoor Buddha statue, but its also very beautiful, More than half of Lantau island is a designated country park and the island is bigger than Hong Kong itself. The ferry over to the island takes around half an hour and goes past many of the other small outlying islands, once you land in Lantau you then need to catch a bus to get to Ngong Ping village which is an experience in itself, the journey there the bus driver seemed to go as fast as ... read more

Got up early today to trek back over to Kowloon. Journey wasn't bad because we knew where we were going...hoping to stay on the 3rd flooor hostel, instead of Ocean View. It's called Tai Wan Hotel and luckily they had room! It was a jawdropper when we saw the room...not an Ocean View jaw dropper (a.k.a. Kill me now) but a 'Oh my god thank you; must have done something good in the past life' jaw dropper. Is just like a mini (very mini) hotel suite - little bedside lamps and everything! Riding on euphoric wave of happiness, trotted off to catch tube to Lantau Island. Had more bread from bakery for breakfast (except mine turned out to be a donut filled with jam...totally tasty, but not appropriate for breakfast I don't suppose. Bye bye weight ... read more
