Very cloudy and misty today. I decided to have another day out, so walked down to the ferry terminals again. All the streets and pavements were littered with Filipino girls having picnics. Apparently Sunday is the day off for the 153,000! maids in the area and they take the centre over (the Indonesian maids go to Victoria Park, I understand). I thought I'd better do something about postcards on the way (have any readers received them?) and then waited for ferry to Lamma Island at pier 4. Following a short wait, I got on the ferry to Yung Sue Wan. After a 25 minute trip through the murky harbour - there were many container ships unloading onto barges - I arrived on the island, along with the rest of the crowded ferry. I walked though the ... read more

Al has already been to Hong Kong so he was kind enough to do it all over again with me, so up Victoria Peak we go in search of a perfect view of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon (where most people live). It seems that many of China’s cities are extremely smoggy we believe its due to all the pollution from the factories, but even during “Golden Week” when the factories close there is still smog all around. Its only been 10 years since Hong Kong was handed back to China however Hong Kong still maintains its own economic, social and legal systems and there is a huge ex pat community living there making it easy to communicate as most people speak English. Our tour has come to an end and its time to say goodbye that ... read more

After waking up bright and early. We had a delicious breakfast in our hotel...The Eaton. A cook behind a counter was waiting to make omlettes and waffles and pancakes on request! Decided after gorging ourselves with strawberries and hash browns and bacon, that we would try the waffles tomorrow. Full and content, we headed up to the pool on the top floor of the hotel. It's actually on the roof with the sun (which you can't see because of pollution) right above you. It's been very smoggy so far. And very very very humid. I think it was about 80% humidity and 32 degrees today. So, planned for the day we had a boat trip! We caught the train over to Hong Kong after being met at our hotel by Laurie (who funds some of the ... read more

The most surreal episode of the trip so far occured yesterday... I head over to lamma island for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. This is a beautiful little place and displays a massive contrast between old and new China. On arrival, if you look to your left you see a tiny little fishing village with fresh fish in tanks outside of the restaurants. To your right there is an enourmous Industrial factory with huge steam towers. I head through a village called Wang Long (they have some cool names out here) and onto a beach resort. The village is beautiful and looks completely untouched by the Western world although there is a commercial side to it as well. The surreal bit... Whilst sitting in a beach restaurant eating spring rolls, this ... read more

Summary - We are starting with a Chinese dim-sum breakfast. Very popular by the locals. They go together every morning to the restaurants talking the latest gossips and the local news. After the breakfast we take a gym and tai chi. Then we headed for the outlying islands. This group of islands is very popular and a great escape for a day off. The nature is beautiful, when you walk ten minutes after arriving on the islands you feel the old atmosfere and you get the feeling that you are alone on the world. Not during the weekends because during the weekends a lot of locals are visiting the islands. You can reach the outlying islands by ferry boats and the average trip takes about 30 / 40 minutes. And of course you have a lunch ... read more

As the sun baked down, our three intrepid explorers made there way through the lush green mountainous island. Heading from Yung Shue Wan (area josh lives in,) to Sok Kwu Wan on the other side of the island. The island is covered with steep concrete paths that make walking round Lamma fairly easy. Spaced out along the paths, in areas with great views are these Chinese pagodas. The one we stopped at on the way back was a godsend with its cool breezes and comfy seating. Sok Kwu Wan is a much smaller, quieter place that seems to be made up mainly of the fish farms and seafood restaurants that are famous in Hong Kong. The restaurants actually have there own ferries to bring in customers from the city. It's a very picturesque place with ... read more

We arrived in Hong Kong last night at 7pm into a busy and slightly confusing airport. Not quite sure of where we were supposed to go, it turned out you had to catch a tube train to the luggage pick up. Getting through customs was easy, we then caught the express train to Hong Kong central. The train ride was pretty eye opening, Hong Kong seems to be the city of a billion light bulbs and no one can remember to turn them off when they go out. It reminds me of the film Blade Runner. There were crazy neon lit football pitches and basketball courts and huge neon billboards everywhere. The train track ran through what can only be described as a pile of concrete spaghetti of roads passing above and below in all directions. ... read more

We ate pad thai ‘til I nearly keeled over, had some good cawfey tawlks and watched ‘batteries not included’ -what pattootters those little ‘bots were. Never met the elusive roommate Dan, who hibernated…what’s the status on that one girl? //Apres Jess, I visited Gemma, who had cute roommate Matt deux.( hehhy-ey!...paige’s gay horse joke has become the, well my house joke. Hehehe) Went out when I shouldn’t have and bronchitis. Shyiht. (poo-ya) So, yeah, I had a sore throaght, and thought I’d abstain from substances when I went to trivia night at Jimi Jazz. I took the ferry out to Lamma Island. I love being on the water, so half of the fun for me was to ride the ferry. I can't believe how easy it is to get around in HK. I believe that the ferry only cost a few US dollars (by this point, I had finally learned the exchange rate, and no longer felt the need to think in terms of water bottles). The funny thing was that there were a bunch of kids that were apparently playing games with one of the crew. The kids would do something silly, then bang on the cabin door till someone came out. They'd then drag the crew guy over to where something of the utmost importantance had occured (like say, one of them put a coke bottle on their ... read more
