It was a fairly early start as we wanted to take the 8:35 am ferry from Central to Sok Kwu Wan. Also since it was a public holiday I wanted to get there with plenty of time to spare in case the ferry was busy. The subway and walk from the station to the pier were painless, we had been on the lookout for somewhere to grab some breakfast from, but there was nothing about. I ended up with a can of coffee and a ham and egg sandwich from some shops in the ferry terminal building. Not amazing, but they filled the hole. I shouldn't have worried about the ferry as although there were quite a few people queuing there were still plenty of seats left. I love how the boards tell you how many ... read more

I was up very early, so that I could head to Lamma Island for the day. I was really looking forward to exploring the island as everything I had read online and friends' experiences were all very positive. I stopped off at McDonalds for breakfast and a coffee. There were quite a few homeless looking people making use of the place to have a nap as it was a really big store and pretty quiet. Then I headed over to the Star Ferry pier and took the ferry across to Central. From there I headed to the depaarture dock for Lamma Island. The ferries run to two different ports on Lamma Island: Sok Kwu Wan and Yung Shue Wan. Most of the stuff I read about doing the Family Trail across the island, the people had ... read more

Hello everyone Yesterday we went to Lamma Island, which is the third largest island in HK, west of HK Island. The island is a traditional fishing village; it is a laid back and multicultural community that has no cars! It was great to escape HK’s hectic city for some green trails with little sandy beaches dotted along the way. It reminded us of the Caribbean. We left about 9ish, we headed to central metro from our hostel, where we caught a £2 ferry for 30 minutes to Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island. The trek was about 90 minutes to Sok Kwu Wan ferry terminal. On the way we passed two sandy beaches, a few market stores, a lot of sea life being sold, many pavilions and lovely views out to sea. Definitely one of the must ... read more

FRIENDS! FAMILY! ESTEEMED RAGAMUFFINS! On the 2nd October, I will be heading back home. After a year of living and working in Hong Kong, I am looking forward to cold weather, dandelion and burdock, and people whose madness I understand. There are, of course, several flights every day from Hong Kong to UK, but I have decided against this. I don't want to get a flight; they are boring. Instead of sitting for 24 hours with crying children, ear-popping, bad food, and a functioning entertainment system a mile up in the air, I am instead going to be travelling overland for weeks.... with crying children, a stiff back, weird food, and no entertainment system (beyond the company of strangers). My journey (a mixture of train, car, bus, etc.) will take me from the south of China ... read more

This blog is a long one, but I figure since it's been awhile since I've posted you all wouldn't mind :o) Also, I am now having trouble with my Flicker account, so there are no links to albums. I tried to create a link for the albums from my iPhoto, but I can't figure out how. I'm not very computer savy, lol. If anyone has suggestions on an easier way to upload albums let me know! Oh and after this post I am not going to have access to Face Book anymore b/c you can't get FB in China. I've had it up to this point b/c my friends have the Astrall VPN on their computer, but they are leaving tomorrow. So, if you've been reading this through the FB posts and you want to keep ... read more

I just arrived from Lamma Island today, and I still have no idea what it's title should be. Lamma Island honestly looked like Cheung Chau and Po Toi island combined. Add some foliage & land consolidation, and there you have it - Lamma Island. I left Tung Chung today at 7:30, as I was already pretty confident on how to access the Central Piers from the Hong Kong MTR. There are two main piers in Lamma Island where the ferries from Central go to - Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan. The ideal itinerary in Lamma Island is to hike from Yung Shue Wan and all the way to Sok Kwu Wan, so going to any of the two piers makes no difference if you're going to do the hike. I decided to take the ... read more

Took the fast ferry to Lamma Island, It's much quieter there, no cars as such, just miniature single seat phut phut tipper trucks that are the workhorses on the island. Cimbed the hill to Hong Kong's only wind turbine. Didn't dare try the local seafood (kept live in tanks for freshness) so had a Zinger burger at the fast food outlet near my hotel, tasted good but meat was really stringy, wasn't sure if it was chicken:-S... read more

Becca studied abroad in Hong Kong during Spring 2008 so coming back for her was like me going back to Bath. It was glorious. One night we went out with some of Becca's old friends and some ones that we just made to spend the night sleeping on the beach of Lamma Island which is an island right off Hong Kong. This was a highlight for our trip because it was so much fun and I can honestly say I have never slept on a beach before. On the dock of the lake yes but never on a Chinese beach to wake up to Chinese children playing in the sand. Here are some great pictures of our adventures. ... read more

Saturday morning, Kelly & Cali headed back to Shenzhen as Pete & Martin came over the border to meet up with Staci and I. The four of us first went to another hostel to check in for the night. Us girls got to stay at YesInn which is a pricier hostel in Hong Kong but also the most modern of them all that we have stayed in. But we have been staying at another hostel on Hong Kong Island for cheaper, so we made the switch for the 2nd night. We then head to Just Salad, a restaurant, which Martin and Staci have raved about and we hadn't been to yet. We got to either chose a salad or a wrap. The little things we miss in Mainland China. After we enjoyed lunch we headed to ... read more
