Wünsch euch Zuhaus... read more

Having to get up at 4 in the morning is not a very nice thing to have to do on any day. Especially if you're not arriving until 7 the next morning. Anyway we blasted over to Hong Kong to start our holiday. It was pretty rubbish weather and a bit of a dirty place. However, things started to look up later on at night when we barbequed some octopus and got three Hugo Boss belts and a 35 grand rolex for 30 squid on the lady market. We walked over nearly the whole of Hong Kong which is quite a big place and saw a lot of random sights like a whole shop full of sharks fins and edible birds nests. We checked out alot of dodgy Chinese 'food' and went in a load of ... read more

My brothers and I wake up around 9 AM starving. The agenda for our first day in Hong Kong? Eat our way through Kowloon. I had been warned about HK food by some Chinese and Taiwanese friends of mine in the U.S. "The bacteria is different. You'll have diarrhea for days before you get used to the food." Little do they know, my family inherited iron stomachs. There's a million bakeries in Hong Kong pretty much selling the same fare, but some better quality than others. The Five Star Bakery on Nathan Road a few blocks from the our hostel sells sandwiches, hot dog filled pastries, and an incredibly tasty soft bun topped with mayo and seaweed and some unknown meat. Walking down further, there's a place that sells teriyaki beef with spaghetti sauce which my ... read more

I'm writing my first journal entry at 2:15 AM Hong Kong time (10:15 AM PST) in the light of my book lamp under blankets that smell like musty clothes, on a bed that's rock hard, with my brother's feet in my face and the inharmonious sounds of HK street life and cars and my two brothers snoring in my ears. And although I can't sleep, I'm as happy as a clam. Arlene and Max saw me off at LAX airport. Max had booked a night at a hotel near the airport so it would be super convenient and we would miss all the crazy LA traffic before my morning flight. As Arlene, Max and I were sitting on the top floor of the international terminal at a table with a view of the planes, this guy ... read more

Unfortunately our arrival in HK saw the prices more than triple! Our accommodation, in a rather dishevelled building, in a small (Chinese size) double bed in the tiniest of rooms was to cost us five times more! This was a severe shock to the system.....so much so that we went to sleep!!!! Waking up, we took to the streets and within 15 minutes found that we were lost! We got ourselves out of that pickle and headed to Victoria Peak via the Star Ferry (a must for the true HK experience!). This peak was reached on an age old funicular that got us to the top a helluva lot faster than walking would have done, where we were met by a pretty awesome sight. Hong Kong was lit up rather breathtakingly and, apparently, we were very ... read more

Finally arrived in Hong Kong after the 13 hour flight, good job we booked a hostel otherwise we would not have had a clue where to start. The hostel is apparently quite good, or so were told. The fact that all the beds touch gives you an idea of how small its is, and that was the first room! The second room we got moved into after we decided to stay a few more nights was even smaller and included an all in one shower/toilet/sink, i included a pic because im sure its the sort of thing you want to see! Finding places to eat has been particularly difficult, especially with jon with us. But we have managed to include some Japenese food a couple of chinese but probably more than anything so far, McDonalds, not ... read more

Today was a full day touring Hong Kong, doing all of the touristy things that we could cram into a day. First off it was a ride down to Tsim Sha TSui on the clean, efficient and quick MTR (day pass about £5). This area seems to be far more touristy than Mong Kok. Within a minute of coming out of the station i was being assailed by people wanting me to get a new suit fitted. We walked down to the harbour and caught the Star Ferry across to Hong Kong Island. I know it's a cliche, but the trip is one of the most spectacular trips you can do on public transport anywhere in the world. It's right up there with the Sydney - Manley ferry trip and it only cost about 20p (UK). ... read more

Getting into Hong Kong after our Cathay Pacific flight (wouldn't rush to go back with them - woeful food, no free bevy, and you couldn't pause the films) was a breath of fresh air - literally - after the 'name that stench' air of India. The airport was gleaming and, unlike the rest of the city as we were soon to find out, they had been given carte blanche as far as space went. It was huge, and gleaming, and a welcome sign that hygiene was a priority here. You could have eaten your dim sun off the floor it was so clean, as it was being polished every 5 min by a small army of SARS/dust-masked cleaners. All this came at a price though - a bar in the terminal was advertising pints of Guiness ... read more

Yet another early start for us this morning, as we had to rush back to Sydney to catch the plane to Hong Kong. The hotel had made us a packed breakfast, which was huge - everything from freshly made tea and bacon rolls to fruit salad and pastries. You could have found a grassy hill and fed 5000 with it. The traffic getting into Sydney was terrible, as there was a jack-knifed truck that had closed the motorway. So we ended up crawling our way through Botany, glancing nervously at the clock. We made it with little time to spare and hopped on the flight. The eight hour flight flew by thanks to the excellent entertainment system that Qantas have. You can watch any film or programme on demand. The only bad part of the flight ... read more
