The overnight train from Chengdu to Xichang in southern Sichuan was again a very easy and comfortable 9 hour trip, and I highly recommend using the trains for long trips. I booked a 2nd class sleeper for $24 and had about 7 hours sleep before arriving in Xichang at 7 am. I found a minivan going to the bus station, and when I arrived 15 minutes later I was lucky to catch the bus to Lugu Hu which was departing in 10 minutes. Lugu Hu is a large lake on the Yunnan/Sichuan border at an altitude of 2700 metres and as I found out attracts quite a few Chinese tourists, and as usual very few foreign ones. My original plan was not to come to Lugu Hu but because foreigners are not allowed into western Sichuan ... read more

Our home for the night was a nice little wooden guesthouse run by a family of Mosuo. Almost half of the people living around Lugu Lake are of the Mosuo ethnic group. We woke up 5:45am to be greeted by a Mosuo lady who took us in pitch black to her row boat. Then out on to the still calm of Lugu Lake we were led to a small islet in the middle which we climbed to see the spectacular Yunnan sunrise. Back down again we sat round a fire talking to the Mosuo family. If you have time, do watch the video of the Mosuo boat lady singing. She had an absolutely amazing voice and the song matched the still calm of the lake perfectly. Back at the guesthouse we had a light breakfast of ... read more

Woke up early to catch the sunrise over Qionghai Lake, then hit the roads. I'd remembered passing a sign for the Xichang Satellite Launch Facility not far from Xichang, so I proposed to the team that we visit it before heading for Luguhu Lake. About 30 minutes out of Xichang, through Yi farmland, we reached the facility. Unfortunately the launch site, which is nessled in the mountains, is not open to Laowai (foreigners), but the soldiers at the gate did say we could visit the museum 4km away. What can I say about the museum except that every item looked like a school project. They even had Astronaut suits which you could put on to have your photo taken next to a tin can resembling a rocket. Unfortunately, the suits were not real, and the helmet ... read more

Day 13 Our train arrived at 6.30am and we hopped straight in a taxi to the bus station. This was where we had our first encounter with what other travellers commonly refer to as 'the trough'. The Chinese toilet that is essentially a long gutter that runs the length of the bathroom, with screens to seperate each person, but no doors. Also the toilet will flush sporadically meaning that all the waste is flushed from one end right the way down the line to the drain - and you had better hope you are not in one of the end cubicles at the time as the stench is horrible. Xichang itself was also a pretty horrible looking town, full of factories belching out smoke & smog and so we were happy to leave Xichang behind and ... read more

Dear Friends, Today we left the old town of Lijiang heading for Lugu Lake. It is a drive of 8 hours. The road is very bad again and you realy need a 4-wheel drive car to arrive safely. On the way to Lugu Lake there are many scenic views. It is a long drive, but when you arrive at Lugu Lake you forget the bad roads very quickly and you realy will enjoy the beautiful scenic views. Lugu lake (around 2700 meters above sealevel) is a very healthy place with many possibilities for trekking and many scenic views. In this area also live the Mosuo minority people, officially classified as a part of the Naxi minority. You also find here lots of influences from Tibet. Next stop, Lugu Lake. From Lijiang we took a bus to the lake which took a good 8 hours of driving through dirt roads that zig zagged up and down mountains. I think it was a miracle that i never got carsick on either journey to or from lugu. The bus station is located in a town called luoshui in lugu. Once there we found a ride to our true destination, lige, a small town farther north up the coast of the lake. The town was really just a bunch of bungalows and restaurants along the lake front and figured to be a nice place to relax. The forest-lined lake overlaps the remote Yunnan-Sichuan border and is home to several tibetan, yi and mosu villages. the mosu are the last practising matriarchal society in the world ... read more

(Day 121 on the road)To get to my next stop, Lugu Lake, I had to backtrack to Lijiang in order to catch a bus from there to the lake. In Lijiang, I was also going to meet up again with Karen, who had not made it into Tibet after all and was travelling around the same area, so we decided to travel together again. The five hour bus-journey from Shangri-La to Lijiang was awful: The middle aged woman next to met spat right on the floor between her legs continuously, making the floor so disgusting after a short while that she couldn't put her own feet on the floor anymore. After about two hours, I realised that she wasn't feeling too well (maybe all that spit made her sick) and sure enough, a few minutes later ... read more

After arriving in Lijiang, (in North-West Yunnan Province) we were transported on perilious mountain roads (think rock falls /landslides /precipitous drops /narrow roads /limited guard rails / slippery mud), for some six hours to the very beautiful Lugu Lake (which borders Sichuan Province). The journey included crossings of some six mountains, and some fantastic scenery, including of the Jinsha River, the upper reaches of the Yangtse River. Sadly there were too few stops in which pictures could be taken! We also passed some amazing agricultural communities, and diverse tribal cultures, including the Naxi, the Pun-Mi, the Li Su and ultimately at Lugu Lake, the Mosuo. It was fascinating to see women working in the fields in their brightly coloured distinctive clothes. Steep hills were grazed by goats, cattle and pigs and often under cultivation. James decided before the trip that this should be the first stop for our 9-day excursion. For him the reason is simple: since it is so far away from Lijiang, not too many people have been there. So after flying from Shanghai to Chengdu, then thransit to Lijiang, before barely knowing our way around Lijiang, we were on our way to LuGu Lake, via the long distance shuttle bus running between Lijiang and LuGu Lake. We wanted to find a private tour to get there but no luck. So there we were, ended on the bus. LuGu Lake is about 200 km from Lijiang. The road there is all in the mountain region. It took a whole lot longer than we originally thought. Half way down the journey, when we stopped for the bathroom break, James ... read more
