This finds me still in Urumqi, 4thday since arriving, fully recovered and rearing to go. Held up a little due to a lack of organisation, awww perhaps I’ll go for a little wander after the race, without delving more into the practicalities especially the language barrier. The people are no problem they are very tolerant even friendly, China would be one of the safest countries in the world to travel, man, woman or child, deepest depths of the night, its meaningful communication that’s the problem. One really needs to have the contacts lined up, whether that be private guides or other travel help, or in my case now that I have meaningful contact, getting them to pass me on down the line. I found Beijing and Shanghai easy enough to get around as English was a ... read more

After a murderous 8 hour bus ride, three bus loads of us arrived at the Urumqi airport, all seemingly making their connecting flights as they were still sitting on the ground held up by high winds. I hailed a taxi, flashed a bit of envelope the travel lady had written the name of the hotel on for me and hoped for the best. Except for a bit of the after match blues the next morning, I was happy to have come to Urumqi. The Hotel is perfectly situated, near lots of easy cheap food, with smiling helpful people when Ferangi starts to glaze over. So its been pretty much, sleep and eat, do the washing and eat, play with photos and eat, go to the supermarket and eat, do my exercise regime so that it doesn't ... read more

As soon as my plane touched down in Urumqi, I was on the go again! Rhonda and Kelsey wanted to go bowling. So I ran home, took a shower, and headed back out. I didn't get any pictures of bowling, but the highlight of our outing was a walk in Hongshan Park right next to where we bowled. Ice sculptures were being carved - ever so many of them - and they were beautiful!... read more

On Saturday evening, December 15, Rhonda and I hosted a little Christmas party for our co-workers at the kindergarten. We ordered pizza and bought a carrot cake from a local western bakery. We played a couple of games and gave away presents, and then had a typical western-style gift exchange, complete with opportunities to steal!... read more

On Monday, December 3rd, Rhonda and I went shopping for Christmas stuff for our respective apartments and roommates. We made a stop in a tea shop and the sales ladies tried to sell us their teas by having us sit down for a tea ceremony, which was most enjoyable! It took until two days later on Wednesday night for my roommates and I to all be home together so we could decorate our tree. So our Christmas celebrations - first ever Christmas celebrations for my roommates - are now underway! The next week, we baked cookies in our new oven. Very few places here have ovens, and the girls wanted one, so we bought one for Christmas. It's basically a large toaster oven, but we can now make cookies!... read more

On the Monday before (American) Thanksgiving, Jeff and Kelsey hosted the EF teachers for Thanksgiving dinner. In addition to turkey, gravy, and stufffing, we had lots of other less-traditional things like kimbab, a Chinese soup, and mashed potatoes with meat and tomato sauce. We got to tell our Chinese friends about the wishbone and enjoy watching them break it. And Jeff made an AMAZING pecan pumpkin pie!... read more

In the wee hours of Thursday morning, the snow started falling here. We hadn't seen any sign of snow up until now, but, when it fell, it was enough to bother with, not just flurries! Despite my hatred of cold and snow (I like it for Christmas, and that's about it), I must admit that my walk to work that morning was beautiful! Snow removal here is... interesting... to say the least. It doesn't seem that there's much professional snow removal: if you want your area cleared, I guess you do it yourself. Furthermore, there seems to be next-to-no sign of salt or sand. Thursday afternoon was a sunny afternoon, so the snow started to melt. But it's been cold since. So... do the math: uncleared snow + a little sunshine + subsequent cold temperatures - ... read more

Sand begleitet unser Leben...... Sand überall, wo man hinkommt.

Today was the Islamic Corban Festival. Since there is a significant Muslim population in Xinjiang, it's sort of a holiday weekend here. By holiday weekend, I mean that I was off work today and will be off on Monday and Tuesday. I still have to work the weekend as usual. It seems like many schools and companies are doing things this way. Having a "split" holiday seems strange to Westerners, but there are a lot of strange things here! Corban is the commemoration of Abraham's willingness to offer his son as a sacrifice at God's command, and then offered the lamb that was provided by God. So lambs are slaughtered in the street as a sacrifice, and then families feast on them. I was invited by an American friend to go to a Corban dinner. First ... read more
