Since our last blog we have been in two small towns - Kangding for three nights and Xiangcheng for two. KANGDING Kangding is a stop over for most people to get from Chengdu (where we saw the panda's) into western Sichuan. Once you head west of Chengdu the mountains start and traffic slows. We took our very first Chinese bus from Chengdu to Kangding. We had planned on finding a hostel in Kangding, but since we got off the bus late and it was raining, we decided to follow a little old lady to her hotel and she hooked us up with a clean double room for 80 yuan. Our first double bed and our cheapest accommodations in China! The room ended up being pretty nice. It was cold and the walls were thin (we could ... read more

(Long time no blog. Still continuing the Spring Festival tale from where it left off.) I took a cab to the sub station well before the sun came up and to my surprise found three other foreigners also waiting. It appears that the Yunnan and Sichuan highlands are quite popular travel destinations for foreigners. Especially since the 2008 change in requirements for foreigners entering Tibet, maybe more and more people are traveling to Deqin County in Yunnan and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous region in Sichuan. There was a crunchy granola French couple and a long-term traveler Canadian guy. I tried to chat with the French couple, but they weren't that friendly, their English wasn't that good, and they seemed to be pretty into criticizing the Chinese government and tourism industry. For example, they referred to Xinjiang ... read more

Nie wiedzielismy czego do konca mozemy sie spodziewac, poniewaz nasze przewodniki posiadaja jedynie szczatkowe informacje o tych terenach... Z Chengdu do Kangdingu wyruszylismy o 6: 30 rano. Podroz trwala okolo 9 godzin.

The 9 hour bus trip to Xiangcheng was a trial, with the first 7 and a bit hours being on an unsurfaced road that was bumpy as hell. One bonus was that there was a driver-enforced smoking ban. Our chosen guesthouse had no laundry facilities (and it subsequently turned out that was the case for the entire town) so I had to resurrect long-unused handwashing skills. The guesthouse was also something of a fly trap, so I had some fun with a flip-flop before realising it was a losing battle. Since the RG language section is only 15 pages in a 1,200+ page book, we decided to get the section photocopied so we could carry it around more easily in the phrasebook. We found a photocopying shop and indicated what we wanted doing, which the guy ... read more
