The first day of our trip to Chengdu we took a drive to Leshan to see the Giant Buddha. We have seen pictures of this and shows on TV but it is really amazing to see it in person. The Buddha was built during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) by a monk named Haitong. It was completed by his followers after his death and stands 71 meters (233 feet). The waters in the river below the Buddha are very swift and he built the Buddha in an attempt to calm the turbulent waters for the safety of the fishermen. I can say the waters are still not calm but I am sure the gods were impressed with his effort. It is said that he walked through the villages to gather money for the Buddha’s construction. ... read more

Today I slept in a bit and awoke to no electricity. This was almost like a sign telling me to get out of town. So I did. I headed out to see the world's tallest Buddha. He's 71m high, his ears are 7 meters long, his insteps are 8.5 m broad, his big toe is 8.5 m and he has fingernails bigger than your average human. Oh, and he's about 1200 years old. I've seen the largest bronze Buddha in Hong Kong, but this one blew me away. He's the Grand Canyon of Buddhas and my reaction was equally appropriate. My self-guided tour also included two Fins I met when I got off the bus. We made our way through town, had a lovely vegetarian lunch, and then, in the rain I should expect when I ... read more

After spending last weekend’s 3 day holiday weekend cooped up on my room, I decided that the following weekend, I best get out of town if not only for a day. I mentioned my destination to my students, Leshan, and 2 girls told me they had never been, so they would accompany me. At first I was hesitant to accept their company, but admitted to myself that it would be helpful to have their verbal skills at my disposal. So we set up the plan to meet in front of the school at 7am sharp, Saturday morning. Leshan is a small-ish town about 3 hours from here, it is known for having the world’s largest Buddha and that is all. A nice day trip I thought to myself. Saturday morning I meet my 2 students ... read more

Communication and Coincidence. We left Chengdu for Leshan and the Giant Buddha on the morning of 22nd. We arrived at one of the many Chengdu Bus Stations by taxi and Richard booked us tickets. We were somewhat surprised to find ourselves on a 7 seater mini bus and not your usual Chinese coach for the 2 hour journey. It became clear very quickly to the other passengers that neither of us spoke Mandarin so we settled down to a peaceful morning. It didn’t take Richard long to work out that one of the guys spoke Japanese so for the next 2 hours we enjoyed conversations going from Mandarin to Japanese to English and back and forward again. After a little while the guy sitting in front of us explained to our now Japanese interpreter that he ... read more

Greeting from Leshan, China. I moved to Leshan a few weeks ago to start a new job. I will teach Oral English to nursing students at Leshan Vocational and Technical College. School starts next Monday and I still do not have my schedule of where and when my classes. This is typical in China. In my last job in Chengdu I was never informed that I will have 7 weeks off from Dec. 26 until Feb. 16th!!! It is rather difficult to plan anything here!!! Some students have to wait in line at train stations for 2 days to get a ticket home!!! I have to give a final examination in my classes and everyone expects a written examination. Chinese students typical had English classes for over 5 years and they are exclusively grammar, reading and ... read more

This we had to see as it was in our area of travel, The World's Largest Buddha, standing overlooking the River. Carved into the rocky river bank / cliff. We joined the crowds and I mean crowds, to climb the steep steps down to the Buddha's feet. A dramatic sight, an overwhelming 71m high, ears 7m long, feet 8.5m wide, 1 toe being 8.5m long! It was simply huge! It was in 713AD when a Buddhist monk, Haitong began building it. 90 years after his death the Buddha was completed. Inside him is a water drainage system which prevents him from weathering away. On top of the cliff it was quite spiritual, with temples, pagodas, a mini waterafall and ponds with impressive goldfish. ... read more

Vi havde laest og hoert at stedet man skal bo paa er 'teddy bear hostel' som ogsaa viste sig at vaere et super sted med servicen i top. ... read more

Today we visited Leshan on a confluence of three rivers some 1200 years ago a inspired Monk decided to carve the Grand Budda into the rock face. This was to inspire local traffic on the Mingjiang river to avoid accidents which were very common at this era in time. We took a speed boat out infront of the Budda before landing and taking the climb to the Budda itself. This was magnificent, stair cases take you up and down either side of this impressive structure- where even the feet are some 8 metres long. This evening we endulged in the the Sichuan hotpot a dish made in a pre-cooked chilli broth and adding your own meats and veggies. Basically you cook your own meal- with a kick the food is that powerful you have to ... read more
