Yesterday I returned to the Taoist temple for a third time. It seems every time I go is more amazing than the last. We, myself and a few of my classmates, arrived just in time to see the monks performing a ceremony that included chanting, bells, and drums. It was really special and quite a treat. We were also greeted by two of the most incredible butterflies I have ever seen. The atmosphere and energy of the whole place is so calming and peaceful that immediately upon entering, the craziness of the city outside disappears and a sense of tranquility washes over me. After giving thanks by lighting some incense, we moved over to the Tea House. It is a place I could easily spend an entire day, drinking tea and breathing deep, letting the crazy ... read more

Photos: ....my original plan to visit Miss Piggy for her wedding floundered when either I or she (or both) mixed up the dates. It's on March 8th, not February 8th. After two days on the farm & a few more in Guiyang plus a trip to the Huangguoshu Falls, documented in last week's newsletter, it's time to make a move. Thoughts of warmer weather & sunkissed beaches have been abandoned. Southern & central China are just starting to thaw out from some of the heaviest snowfalls for years..... …..Guilin, about 500km east? Su Yin Hui (Suzy), the English teacher whose wedding I attended a few months ago, will be there with her husband. It apparently requires changing trains halfway. Kunming, about the same distance east, close to some beautiful scenic spots. Maybe Chengdu, north of Guiyang ... read more

Well we survived the Sichuan banquet - the dishes weren't very hot at all and some people on the tour complained and asked for some actual spicy food!! We were told that our stomachs couldn't handle real Sichuan spices but our guides promised us a spicy dish added in to the menu for lunch and dinner today! Today our tour is to Leshan, the site of the tallest Buddha in the world. He has been cut into the rocks over 900 years ago at the confluence of three rivers to placate the river demons where a lot of boats were sank because of the whirlpool. Amazing to think that the monks carried out this work that long ago with limited tools and equipment and managed to get features carved into the rock that really look realistic ... read more

Now it was time to visit Leshan & the 233 feet tall Buddha carved in the rock, our time in Leshan was very brief, we left the cold & rain of Emei & headed off, I thought Leshan would be cold & rainy too so I put layers on again to keep warm. I was exhausted because of our noisy neighbours AGAIN so had a little sleep in the car on the way there, when I woke up the sun was shining & you could actually see the sky, needless to say I did not need the layers. We had to take a detour because a bridge to get to the Buddha was under construction but eventually we arrived, we got on a boat & had to put life jackets, again we were the only western ... read more

A day trip from Chengdu... On a misty morning, we left our Chengdu hostel and got a local bus to the "tourist distribution centre" (the literal translation of the long distance bus station!). We took a two hour bus trip south to a place called Leshan, famous for being home to the largest outdoor Buddha in the world, and another UNESCO site. Upon arrival at Leshan, we took one more bus to the Buddha park/National park area, located across the river. As we entered the park, there was a 170m long stone buddha carved into the rock face, but I reckon it was a cheat because I could only see his head and his feet and the rest of him was conveniently overgrown and covered in trees! The Buddha park was mainly filled with replicas of ... read more

Having walked the length of Dan Ba town to get our bus to Kangding I was relieved to take my boots and sweaty socks off. Now I am blessed with some poignant feet but even I was surprised when the driver got on board and angrily gesticulated that I put my shoes back on. Unluckily I was sat at the front and the driver refused to move until the smell was relieved. Much to the relief of the other passengers I re-laced and order was restored. We arrived four smell-less hours later to Kangding. The mountainous town of Kangding was bigger than we had imagined. It had high rise flats and big advertising screen televisions. However the whole town/city was nestled in a beautiful valley with looming mountains behind it, tempting for any willing trekkers. Our ... read more

Hello all, Nothing new to report other than that I went to LeShan last week with a friend to see the largest Buddha effigy on the planet last weekend. Read more here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leshan_Giant_Buddha My thoughts aren't very collected at the moment, so I don't have much to say other than we met some fascinating people, saw some temples more personally inspiring than the main attraction, and that the Big Buddha was, despite the tourists, numinous. See more here! http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm93/sterlingsin/Chengdu2009/LeShan/ Actually, you know what? Let's try to collect these thoughts now. That was one damn big Buddha. Over 200 feet tall, you could completely fit inside its ear standing up. The day we went was perhaps one of the least crowded days of the year to go, luckily, and the weather held up nicely for this time ... read more

We went to Leshan on a side trip within our Chengdu trip to go and visit the biggest buddha in the world. We got to our hotel early in the evening. Leshan was refreshing because our hotel overlooked a small river. I didn't realize how much I missed moving, running, natural water until I saw that river. In the morning, we went to visit 乐山大 (the big buddha). It was a short hike up from the entrance to the head of the buddha. Then we hiked down to its feet on a narrow staircase, and back up on another. It was a rather impressive buddha, with a foot taller than me and a 7 or 8 foot ear. The river in Leshan runs right in front of the buddha, which created a nice atmosphere. There isn't ... read more

On October 5th we took a day trip from Chengdu to Leshan mainly to see the Grand Buddha, which is the biggest buddha carving in the world. It is 71 meters tall and 17 meters wide. The bus ride to Leshan was very straight forward, but getting to the grand buddha once we got to leshan was more difficult. From the lonely planet we knew we should ride bus 13, but it didn't say which direction to take it, and also the bus station was on the wrong spot in the map. So when we first got on the bus, I was checking my compass and thought we were headed the wrong direction, so we got off the bus. Only once we started asking people on the street did we find out that we were on ... read more
