Greetings! Well, I'm going to start off with some good news. I've been accepted into the education program at a new teachers college opening up in Burlington. So this means I'll be around for at least a full year. I am looking forward to coming home. The last month, I've gone on a few long weekend trips. First I was in Shanghai. Its a cool city with an interesting mix of European and Chinese architecture. When I was in Shanghai, it was the start of a week long holiday for the Chinese. Many people in the city were visiting from the countryside, and I am guessing that they hadn't seen many white people before (or they think I am some sort of mutant!). I was stared and pointed at and 4 different people came and stood ... read more

Shanghai is known as the most vibrant, most fast-paced and most western city in China, and it certainly shows. The city goes on for miles and there are skyscrapers everywhere. Its apparently fast catching up with Hong Kong and the Chinese government is hoping that in 10 years it will be a bigger and better business centre than Hong Kong itself. Its one of those cities that you experience rather than tour, because there really ain't much to see apart from the culture. Possibly the thing we will remember the most of Shanghai though is the bed. Yup, the hotel we stayed in had the most amazing bed. The mattress was so soft, and the sheets were so clean that it made your skin tingle from excitement. It was one of those beds that you just ... read more

Finally, after a week and a half I can access my travel blog. The internet connections in China are SO BAD that for days the speed is 10MBPS AWFUL! there is no way I can open my hotmail account!! Anyways, we are back and this time we have pictures of the Peach Festival. I expected it to be a "big deal" like the cherry blossom festivals in Japan (or Georgia :)) However, in Shanghai, you not only have to drive 1.5 hours, you also have to pay around $3 per person (pretty expensive here), since you can eat lunch for that amount of money) and once you go inside the field, there are thousands of peach trees (with flowers, of course) and little or none entertainment. The flowers were beautiful but the entertainmet was dreadful. I ... read more

Our mandarin classes are doing really well. We already know how to say specifically what kind of meat we want to eat (which turns out to be very useful in most restaurants that offer from pig ears to whole frogs, passing by snakes and fish we never heard of). As part of the classes, we had a trip to Suzhou, a city not far away from Shanghai (only 1.5 hours away) which we were told was beautiful. Omar could not come since he had to work but I joined the trip with 30 other students and our teachers. In fact, Suzhou is a beautiful city, full of gardens, flowers, stores selling silk and traditional buildings. Exactly the type of city you expect when you come to China. Our teachers suggested we should try the local food ... read more

Reading one of the magazines for foreigners, I found some of the questions you need to answer in the written test for getting a driver's licence. The exam for foreigners is in English. A form of English quite unintelligible, (the journalist specifically says it appears to be an unscripted speecb by George Bush, translated into Swahili and then back again by a rabid dog with a taste for martinis). The test is multiple choice. The following are some of the actual questions from the test and imaginary answers: Q. If you get in or out of an alley, cross a level crossing of a railway, make a sharp turn, or pass through a narrow road, a narrow bridge or a tunnel at the speed of 20km/hr, you: A: ...ARE LUCKY TO BE ALIVE Q: What causes ... read more

Last weekend Omar and I went to what we expected to be a great concert. Diana Krall was opening the Jazz festival and her concert was at one of the largest parks in the city. Great! we thought, remembering the concerts at Chastain Park in Atlanta. The concert was not at the park. It was inside a huge tent that was covering the park. Our ticket allowed us to sit in white plastic chairs VERY far away from the stage... In fact, we could not even SEE the stage since there was a yellow fence preventing us to see everything but the lights on the stage (the "cheapie fence"). Maybe 300 meters in front of us there was a large fast fold screen with a projector that reproduced what was happening in the stage. Ok, we ... read more

Omar and I went yesterday to have dinner at "Banana Leaf" a Thai restaurant with a comprehensive menu of fish entrees; which made Omar's choice very easy. He had the only entree that included rice and chicken "Steamed chicken with fried sticky rice". The interesting thing is that this restaurant has every night of the week entertainment provided by a group of young kids (I think from the Phillipines) that dance, play and sing a mix of Chinese and American songs. It was very lively, the entertainers were dressed like cooks and even one was dressed as a policeman! (I guess this was the chinese version of the "Village People") and they were singing and dancing the chinese version of the "Macarena". Of course Omar and I were laughing until they came to us and invited ... read more

This past weekend, Omar and I decided to start visiting some touristic atractions since most of our work in finding an apartment is done (we are just waiting to close the contract). We went to YU YUAN GARDEN a traditional garden that has a lot of stores and a lot of food stands that according to my driver sell the best buns and dumplings in town. Omar and I thought, well, this is a great way to have our Eastern Brunch!! It did not work that way since you had to fight with thousands of chinese to get some food and then the food offered was a challenge to our "western" definition of appealing, healthy, and tasty... I have attached some pictures for your understanding of what I mean by that. Omar got sick of the ... read more

Shanghai felt like we were in Europe. The architecture and the feel of the city were very European. If it wasn’t for the droves of bicycles you would forget that you were in China. We really only had one day in Shanghai and we decided to stray from the tour group (finally!) and go on our own. We started the morning at the Bund which is the walkway by the river. We were able to watch the ballroom dancers and people doing their morning Tai Chi. We then went to the Chinese Gardens which we were so thankful to see; very classic, very beautiful! We had the hotel write down the name of a local antique market and took a taxi. The taxi driver just dropped us off on a street and pointed. We didn’t see ... read more

Yesterday was a GREAT day. It was sunny and when I went out for my afternoon walk, I decided to walk through a public park close to the hotel (that I need to start calling "home" for at least one more month). The park was full of musicians!! KATI I KNOW YOU WOULD HAVE LOVED THAT!! Most of the people were old (maybe 70-85 years old) and half of them were playing chinese instruments in groups, others were singing, others were dancing and the other half was just looking or excercising in the "public gymnasium" the government built in most public parks (I have to say this is a neat idea, you can just put on your sweat pants and use everything, FREE). The musicians were just magical. The music was SO sad but great. I ... read more
