10.00am, Home away from home. What a beautiful day. The summer weather is perfect. Its not too hot and not too cold. After breakfast we took a cab to Yu Yuan Garden. It is a gorgeous old garden. It was built during the reign of Ming Emperor JiaJing (1559) as the private garden of Pan Yunduan which was an administration commissioner of Sichuan Province. Today, you find Starbucks, KFC and a myriad of western restaurants and fastfoods around every corner. And a bunch of shops selling anything from antiques to flying discs (gasings)to traditional and modern musical instruments. The gasing hovers about 5 cm above the platform using magnet. My sister bought one and we proceeded into the center of the garden. There are so many people thronging Yu Yuan Garden on this cool saturday morning. ... read more

9:00 am, The Lakeville, Xintiandi I went to bed and woke up at... Noon, The Lakeville, Xintiandi Considering my sisters in laws were around, we were obliged to follow their itenary so i did not get to explore the REAL Shanghai. 1:00 pm, Huai Huai Road We went to Huai Huai Road. It stretches for about one kilometer and filled with shopping, shopping and shopping. Its evident enough that this place have been infested by western encroachment. Prada, Guess, Swatch, you name it. I spent a lot of time here simply because i was with my sisters and they love shopping. 5:00pm, Fake Market A fucking huge petaling street. What more can i say? There was a person who came up to me and said: "You want buy watch?" and i said "no". Then he said, ... read more

6:30 am, Pudong International Airport, Shanghai. Ahhhh...... Touchdown Pudong. The first thing i noticed about the airport is, it looks just like any other airport. KLIA is a palace in comparison so i shall not go into detail. I grabbed my borrowed knapsack (thanks aedewan for lending it to me) and headed out to meet yasmin (my sister that has been living in Shanghai for the past 6 months). She told me that there are wierd things afoot in Shanghai and half jokingly telling me that there are people here who walk backwards. Naturally i didn't believe her, thinking that she was trying to take me for a fool. In the car, on the way back to my sisters abode, something bad was brewing in my stomach and i needed to deposit it quickly. I mean ... read more

Hello all A lot of people, particularly those from the UK, come to China expecting the food to be similar to a take-away shop in the UK. It comes as no surprise that a lot of expats, travellers and long term students are simply overwhelmed with the exotic, the strange and the vast range of dishes and cooking styles that are incorporated into Chinese cooking. FORMAL RESTAURANTS IN CHINA Also the eating style is much different from the West. Forget your table for two, intimate lighting and relaxing atmosphere. Eating in China is a boistrous occasion. The Shanghainese call the ideal atmosphere "renao" or "hot and noisy". Large circular tables, with a revolving platform in the centre, accommodate up to 12 people, with large dishes brought to the table where you take what you fancy and ... read more

Geo: 30.835, 121.531I love Shanghai! It's so exciting. The bund is just magnificent. European colonial buildings on one side of the river then extremely modern buildings on the other side. Looking over towards Putong at night must be one of the most impressive sights in the world. It's also a lot of fun because lots of Chinese tourists come to have their photo taken with you. The tourist tunnel that goes underneath has to be done. It has nothing to do with Shanghai or China but is like being in Doctor Who's tardis. So many pretty lights. Nightlife in Shanghai is just everywhere. The city never sleeps. There's only one choice for accommodation, 'The Putong Hostel.' Backpackers' lodgings and prices in an old colonial building right on The Bund. Yu Gardens are beautiful. Wonderful Chinese architecture ... read more

This is just a compilation of some great pictures of Shanghai. Most of them are not mine, I either found them on the web or other people shared them with me (thanks Dan!). I chose to publish these pictures because I think they truly represent what I see everyday. Some are interesting, some are funny but this is what makes this city so special. I hope you enjoy them! At the bottom of the pictures, I am mentioning the original sources. TOMORROW I WILL POST A BLOG ABOUT OUR TRIP TO BEIJING AND THE VISIT TO THE MAO ZEDONG MAUSOLEUM. GG... read more

This past weekend we went to the zoo. It was a great experience! The zoo is mainly well kept with lots of gardens and ponds. It surprised me, though that some animals had large living spaces and other tiny cages... Some seemed happy, other looked sad and lonely. Anyways, we learned a lot. We learned that there are more than 500 species of gold fish in China (some pics of the weird ones) could see at least 25 species there. We learned about several monkey species that are only found in China, we saw lots of girafes, hippos, tiger, a chinese tiger, a panda and even a gorila!. What really made us sad was seeing how so many Chinese were either throwing stuff at the animals like water, plastic bottles, plastic bags, feeding them or bothering ... read more

Unlike my travels through Japan where I spent a few days in each town and moved at a slow pace, this tour has us moving at a break neck pace. I am a bit tired so this will be short. We arrived in Shanghai early and we were immediatly shuttled to town. The ride from the airport to downtown provided us a spectacular view of the stunning skyscrapers of Shanghai. After some food and a quick tour of the old city (which has become a tourist trap), we strolled along the Bund (the river). Once again the weather was perfect as the sun shone brightly and a sweet breeze kept us cool. A 1 hour stop at the Shanghai museum where once again I befriended some small children (see photo). I also came across a man ... read more

2 weeks ago I decided that my stomach had already adapted to the standards cleanliness of Chinese food and so I started eating street food. I have to say I did not know what I was missing. The food is just wonderful, tasty and cheap! My favorites are a sort of big round soft breads filled with ground meat and vegetables, fried on one side (and steamed on the other) with chives on top, something called jiu cai dan ping delicious pandried flatbreads with a scramble of eggs and chives folded in half and eaten hot of the griddle and the bao zi some BIG steamed dumplings filled with ground pork (or at least ground meat... since we can never be sure). Another Chinese favorite is the Zhong zi which is a mix or rice, spices ... read more

Going back to the crazy stuff that happens here, I some short stories I want to share with you. -My friend finally solved the mistery of the sign close to Century Park that read "Ramp for defromed people". She says it should read "Ramp for deformed (=disabled) people". Very politically correct.... -While searching the internet, I came up with this website that had me laughing for 2 hours (I swear) is the best compilation of "Chinglish" or "Engrish" ever!!!. www.engrish.com In fairness to the Chinese people, I am also including this website that shows awful mistakes by"Westerners" using (or misusing)Chinese characters in tatoos. Do not miss the "CRAZY DIARRHEA" girl, the "Prestigious Blinds" (instead of the intended "William") or the story about this guy from UK that wanted a tatoo that said: "Love, Honor and Obey" ... read more
