Dave isn't able to update this just yet but when he got in touch with us to let us know he arrived, he told us that he'd already eaten duck's intestines, bullfrog and baby eels! And he was still alive the next day...... read more

Or until you're eaten alive by mosquitoes ahhhhhhhh!!! Took a cab back to Huai Hai Lu today since we didn't make much progress yesterday. At Candy's insistence we tried to find our way back to Xin Tian Di, the trendy cafe/bar area to have brunch. I didn't learn the name of the area until after we found it, so I had to trudge around with map in hand asking security guards where the "street with restaurants and no cars" is . We settled on a nice little cafe since all food there was whitey food - didn't feel like overpaying for "French" or "Italian" cuisine. It looks like there was wifi there and I was shrieking "Nooo should've brought my PDA/laptop in my bag!" but I got over it eventually :p After that we walked along ... read more

We had ice-cream! Tsk tsk, I don't know what you were expecting to read after the title! Actually, before that we bummed out at home until afternoon because it was hot, and then we were dropped off at a subway station to make our way to Huai Hai Lu (Road) to shop and poke around. We were going to take a taxi there but I insisted on trying the subway which wasn't a great idea but an adventure nonetheless: Candy can't really read Chinese so poor Flo had to open up the map like a tourist and figure out which stop we needed, and then which line it was since it wasn't labelled or colour-coded on the map (boo hoo), and the $#@% "lady" at the ticket window didn't help, just grunted and took my money ... read more

Didn't post yesterday since we must spent the day at home alternating between eating, reading novels, and napping - ahh, what a life! Today was action-packed though: we crammed into the good ol' SUV (yes, sigh, I know - I didn't even know they had a car here! Honda CR-V) and drove 2.5 hours to the Tai Hu, the second largest lake in China. I was happy because I thought it would be cool by the water, but noooooo, when we get there it is *still* sweltering and the breeze brings only hot wind. Yummy. We went for lunch at a restaurant "on the water" when in fact it is on the edge of the lake surrounded by patches of overgrown algae in stagnant water. Yummy x 2! At least we didn't eat "farmhouse style" i.e. ... read more

Hi all, Been keeping busy for the past couple of days - yesterday we went to a street market (forget the name!) which sold lots of fake designer bags and accessories as well as some clothing. Had to bargain hard for good prices, but the rewards were great - "Louis Vuitton" sunglasses for Candy started off at RMB$220 but went down to $50 which is ~CDN$8. I got two small "Coach" handbags for ~CDN$8 as well, and some other things for gifts for my lady friends - you'll just have to see what you get when I return ;) We also went to the Shanghai Science and Technology Centre which wasn't great and a ripoff for RMB$60 (~CDN$10)... it's sort of like Science World but more technical and dry. I've probably just outgrown things like that... ... read more

10:00am I wanted to leave Shanghai tonight if possible. I had so much to do. I had to buy a pot to cook the maggie mee's i brought with me, i needed to cut my hair botak (in case someone wants to rob me, he'd think twice when he saw my botak hair), i needed to look for a body pouch, i needed a copy of lonely planet (since the book i got sucked big time!), and i really wanted to visit the Shanghai meauseum. 10:30am Huai Hai Road Got my hair cut and headed towards Huai Hai Road. First things first. A body pouch to store most of my cash and my passport in case someone steals things from my pouch while i sleep. In China, people aren't violent like Malaysia but they are fucking ... read more

8:00am Pudong International Airport. My sister left to KL. I saw her off. I'm all alone 10:00am Xintiandi I couldn't go back to bed. Despite having only slept for 3 hours (since i was writing and planning till late last night and my sister needed me to see her off), China was waiting to be explored. I thought i had everything well planned out. I made my way to Huai Hai road and wanted to get the subway to Pudong and visit the aquarium, observatory, museaum and zoo. But hey, museaums?? aquariums?? zoos!!?? Somethings not right. I made my way back to Xintiandi and asked Ms Grace for assistance. Ms Grace is the receptionist at Xintiandi Lobby. I told her "I want to go to village". She quickly scribbled something in chinese and told me to ... read more

First post from abroad and a bit overwhelmed by Shanghai! It's my first visit there and I am terribly jet-lagged... I don't remember being so exhausted on my last visit to HK. Must be getting old. Staying up until 4 am the night before leaving to pack probably doesn't help. Neither does two cups of (damn good) coffee from True Confections from the little gathering the night before. Speaking of which... I'll post the photos from that night in my next blog. I don't have any photos to upload yet since I just set up dialup and need to soak up as much internet as possible... I've been deprived for over 24 hours!!! O_o There's no wifi in the apartment building here and the mall I went to today has restricted wifi for people with China ... read more

10:00am Xintiandi I got up, and headed towards the Jade Buddha Temple. Apparently according to this magazine i read, they have a 1.2 meter fully jade buddha statue there and i thought what the hey, lets just go! Took the subway from Huai Hai to HangZhong and walked aimlessly for another hour. Fuck. The TOURIST MAP SUCKS. There are WAY too many roads here than drawn on the map. After walking and walking i stopped and asked a traffic attendant for directions. I showed the map and he didnt know what i was talking about. I closed my hands together and mimicked the kow tow to buddha action. He said Phu Sha!! Which i assume means Buddha. He pointed down the street and i walked aimlessly another thirty minutes. Finally i decided, FUCK im gonna get ... read more

11:00 am, Xintiandi Today, I plan to walk around Beautiful Dirty Shanghai aimlessly by myself with no plans whatsoever. What i did was, i bought myself a tourist map of shanghai, a few city magazines and headed my way for Huai Hai Road. On the way there, after passing a DVD shops (damn murah man, 4 ringgit only!!), i saw a bunch of old chinaman who sat around this tree. They looked funny so i took a picture. 11:30 Huai Hai Road As usual, Huai Hai Road was filled with western brand name shops with workers that did not speak two words of english. I climbed down the steps into the subway station and stared aimlessly at the ticket dispensing machine trying to understand how much it would cost me to go to the Shanghai Stadium. ... read more
