Xi'an -- Terracotta Soldiers In 1974 farmers digging a well were startled to uncover an intact, full sized clay head. Their surprise was nothing compared to what the archaeologists who began to uncover an army of thousands of life sized terracotta soldiers guarding the tomb of the first emperor, Qin Shi Huang (246 - 209 BC). Over 7,000 life sized figures have been uncovered -- warriors, chariots, and horses, each with individual characteristics, lined up just as they were 2,000 years ago ready to guard the emperor in his afterlife. After the Emperor died there was a revolt by the peasants who broke into the tomb where the soldiers were to steal the weapons. In doing so they broke many of the soldiers who have now been put back into their original shape by archaeologists. The ... read more

Happy Halloween everyone! We had a great time celebrating here, I hope you all had fun, too! On the Saturday before Halloween, we went to a small Halloween party at the Donohoe’s apartment. He is the president of our branch and we have become great friends with them while being here. Every Saturday they teach English to a small group of kids so they did a Halloween party for their lesson. We played the “doughnut on a string” game, bobbed for apples, and Jarek taught the kids a Halloween song! It was great fun. The day before Halloween, Jarek and I taught our English class dressed as zombies, something they had never before experienced in any other class ever. It was a Halloween lesson so we just had to dress up! They thought it was awesome ... read more

Ok, time to test how well you're learning from our blogs: Question: what do the tallest mountain in northern China, a spontaneous choir competition, and a package all have in common? A: Wasted time B: Misinformation C: Disappointment D: All of the above If you are unsure of the answer (or simply seeking greater elucidation), please continue, then try again :) Before we went on fall break, we took a trip to Tai Bai Shan with other students. Tai Bai Shan is a beautiful mountain with colorful trees and clear air. Just like previous hikes, it wasn’t really hiking as much as it was just walking up tons of stairs. The lady in charge of the foreign students planned this outing and told us not to tell anyone because only a few people were invited (and ... read more

A trip to Xi’an necessarily revolves around a visit to the Army of the Terracotta Warriors, although there are many other fascinating sights in the area, notably the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi, the Shannxi History Museum, the Big Goose Pagoda, the Great Mosque and the Muslim Quarter - fantastic street food at the night market! – in addition to some wonderful temples and historical buildings. Do not be deterred by the terrible pollution! Xi'an offered even more enjoyment than I had expected of it, and I would leave an additional few days in your itinerary to enjoy this intriguing city. On a personal level, my traveling partner and I really enjoyed visiting the Taoist Temple of the Eight Immortals. The monks alone were worth the visit, and the temple itself was a treat. Highly recommended. The ... read more

Our 2nd and last day in Xian. Breakfast at hotel. Check out and load our luggage onto the bus. On the way by 9:30. Our first destination of the day is the Xian city wall, one of the few ancient city walls still in existence in China. Built in 1370 during the Ming dynasty, the 12 m walls are surrounded by a dry moat and form a rectangle around the old part of the city 14 km long. Our hotel is outside the wall, so we approach the east gate from the enemy side. Our bus is even lured into the redoubt between the outer and inner gates, where in ancient times we would have had nowhere to go and been mowed down by arrows–but today it is a parking lot for tour buses. We mount ... read more

We wake up in our 2nd major city of the trip: Xian (or more properly Xi'an, pronounced Zhee-jann, two syllables), ancient capital of the Qin, Han and Tang dynasties, among others. Breakfast at the hotel, a nice cross-cultural buffet that includes home fries, which quickly attract a crowd. We are on the road by 9:30, on the way to see the terra cotta warriors, one of the most anticipated attractions of the trip. We drive through Xian, which is another thoroughly modern city, with many impressive sleek office buildings and condos, and a great deal of construction going on. JW tells us that a subway is being built, the first stretch of which opened just weeks ago. Once out of the city, we enter a rural area dominated by fruit farms. Most of the route is ... read more

Wednesday, October 9 Shaanxi, Xi'an, China Rachael and I, before her arrival, discussed at length what she would like to do for her actual birthday, given that she'd be spending it here in China. It seemed most obvious to have her standing on the Great Wall of China on her birthday but, as we had done this on the 5th, it seemed silly to think we'd be doing this again. We determined that she needed SOMETHING stand-outish from the overall trek, and so we came to the conclusion that the Xi'an Terracotta Warriors seemed like a great other-worldly experience to have to make her day count. And we were right. The Terracotta Warriors l somehow wonderfully managed to not read up a whole lot on the Warriors before heading out to see them. By not knowing ... read more

Okay, so it has been a little while. Things are always really busy here - I have worked on this entry for two weeks; sometimes I only had time to write a couple of sentences, but here it is! Everything is an adventure. From merely eating deep fried pig skin to hiking grand mountains, it all has a story. It was our fall break a couple weeks ago so we have been exploring the city of Xi'an. We are so blessed to know such kind Chinese friends who love to take us all over and show us places we have never seen, and on top of that, they never let us pay a dime! We are so blessed! Before I tell of our adventures, let me introduce you to Sean. Sean is the epitome of a ... read more

I thought I should go see the Terracotta Warriors while in Xian. I didn't bother going to the Great Wall when in Beijing because it's just a wall and I've seen plenty of those. But I haven't seen an army of clay soldiers before. There's this thing that's common in Asia where when you visit an attraction, say a zoo or aquarium, you don't buy your ticket at the entry point, you buy it at a completely separate booth and then take the ticket to the entry. I guess it gives more people more jobs, and makes things more confusing for tourists as well, so it has a double benefit. The Terracotta Warriors Museum takes it to an extreme though, with the place you buy the ticket being at least a kilometre away from the actual ... read more

There are five species of snub-nosed monkeys in the world. Three are restricted to China, one is found in both China and Burma, and the last is found solely in North Vietnam. The golden snub-nosed monkey is the most widespread, with a fairly wide distribution in China but there's not many places to actually be able to see them. The Zhouzhi Golden Monkey Reserve outside Xian should be one of the best as it is home to what is described in one book on Chinese wildlife as “the world's only habituated group”. Researchers have been feeding them here for years, which has allowed visitors to be able to go there and reliably see them. It was, nevertheless, very difficult to find out much information about the place – even though it is on Tripadvisor of all ... read more
