We are best friends forever! Literally! Our adventures began April 19, 2013 when we made the special promise of marriage. We have been traveling since the day we got married and will keep traveling for a very long time. The world keeps getting bigger and, after all, there is nobody better to travel with than your very best friend!

Rain poured down the windows as our train left the Xi’an station. Our last moments with our new friends had come to an end. I have been searching for the right words all week to express how I feel, but there just aren’t any. The best way I can think to explain how I feel is through water and lemonade: I came to China with a big vessel of water ready to share that water with whomever I met. With every smile, every hug, every “ni hao” I gave a little more water. I gave a glass of water to the lady selling baozi everyday I walked by her shop. I gave a glass of water to the lady on the 34 hour train ride home from Harbin. I gave a glass of water to our ... read more

Last week we were lucky enough to go spend a couple days with our friend Sherry in her hometown. It is a place called Yan’an, which is about three hours away by train. It is in the northern part of Shaanxi province, near the border of Shanxi province. In the last blog I spoke of all of the “barely made it” situations that we encountered, but this time, we didn’t barely make it. We had an 8:30 train and we left our school at 7:30, which should be plenty of time to make it to the train station and to the platform, but because this city has so many people, we got off the bus with six minutes to spare. We ran as fast as we could to the ticket booth only to realize that the ... read more

The title “The Most Dangerous Hike in China” has been coined as a name for this beautiful mountain, so before I go on I will clarify what that name actually means. China is an “every man for himself” country. When you get on the bus, you push and shove everyone around you to get on as fast as you can whether there are seats or not. When you are at a museum, you slide your way between the bodies to get to the front so you can see what is displayed. When you are at a tourist attraction, you shove, slide, bump, push, pull, and any other word you can think of to get your way to the front of a crowd to see what is happening. (And don’t get me started on how it is ... read more

After months and months of grey skies, we woke up late feeling rather down by all the gloom. I went to the window and opened the curtains and, lo and behold, blue skies were smiling down on me! Because we were already running very late, I told Jarek, "Let's just go ride bikes around the city wall instead of going to class!" He wasn't sure if I was serious, but I was not kidding. Months and months of grey is hard so I needed to take advantage of the beautiful day! (Good thing, too, because the next day was back to grey.) Jarek agreed... I really am not a bad influence all the time, I promise! It was an absolutely perfect day to ride bikes around the wall! It was a little cool with the breeze, ... read more

So today being Mother's Day, I would like to post a special Mother's Day post. First, of course, starting off with my mom who I love so dearly. She taught me through her words and perfect example. I was not the easiest to raise, I definitely had my dark days, but she pushed me through those times and I am so thankful for that. I wouldn't be who I am today without Brianna Lindahl as my mom. Because of my mom, music is my life. She put me in dance lessons very young, allowed me to participate in special choirs, and then came to all the choir performances and dance recitals! And we all know those dance recitals are the LONGEST things ever! Especially when your child is only in one number and you have to ... read more

Back in February, Jarek and I decided we would find a way to make it to Hong Kong for the Asia Area Women's Conference. We agreed with the owner of a music studio to trade teaching music lessons for plane tickets to Hong Kong. I am not going to go into all the details leading up to this point - it isn't a very fun story and it would take way too long - but because of cultural differences, miscommunications, and a few other reasons we made the decision to stop teaching the class. Like I said, it is a very long story so I am not going to go into that, but what I do want to talk about is what we did during our little "music" class every Saturday for the last couple months. ... read more

Now that the year is dying down, we have had the chance to explore a lot more of Xi'an and we don't plan to stop until we go home. We don't have a whole lot of time left, and school isn't the most interesting (to put it lightly) so we have decided to just explore whenever the opportunity presents itself! We will now have a series of shorter blogs with more pictures to show all the places we are going. A couple weeks ago our school took us out on a trip to a village about two hours away from the city. They never say much - communication isn't as easy between the Chinese - so we weren't quite sure what to expect, but I sure am glad they took us! We had a blast! I'm ... read more

Ok, it's definitely my turn to pull my weight and write a blog post; Kaylee has been doing all of the heavy lifting. I know she just finished the entry about Hohhot (which was back in January/February) but I'm going to do the one about Hong Kong now because it's already been a month and we need to catch up! So, here goes: Background: Our trip to Hong Kong was only planned in January. Kaylee has told me for a while that she wanted to go but it just wasn't in our budget until our good friends the Powells told us we could stay with friends of theirs for a few days. See, March 13-15 was the Asia Area Women's conference and Jordan and Cindy Powell were going, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to ... read more

China is truly amazing. The more we travel, the bigger the country becomes. One would think it would be the opposite as places to go get checked off the list and put in the book; however, the places that get checked off the list teach about more places that should be on the list while tempting you not to even check that place off the list so you can return again. Inner Mongolia is one of those places that we cannot wait to return and explore some more. Right when we got off the moderately long train ride, we were blessed by the hug of a great blue sky! Our lungs gasped for clean air in the hopes of clearing out all the Xi'an pollution. It was a glorious feeling! That in itself is enough to ... read more

Harbin! Welcome to a city of blue skies, stackable dolls, and borsch. Oh, and a huge world made from ice and snow - we can’t forget that! Our trip to Harbin was so wonderful. It was great to get away from Xi’an for a little while and enjoy somewhat-smogless air and forks. Yay forks! It makes so much more sense to twirl the noodles with your fork rather than use the shovel-with-a-stick method, but that isn’t what I am here to talk about. I will divide our trip into locations to make it a bit easier to follow. Tigers! Our first big destination was to the famed Siberian Tiger Park! Apparently there are 1,400 tigers there, but only 400 were on display at the time… pick and choose the facts you believe. I choose to believe ... read more
