Wow! How time flies, right? I can't believe it has been four months since I have been in China. So let's recap. Last I remember writing, I was still trying to get used to everything and seemed to be moving along just fine. Now I'm starting to believe that you can't ever get used to anything here. Everything is always changing. And I say that particularly with the education system in mind. There was a point where I was really starting to feel settled. The kids and I were really groovin. I looked forward to seeing them. The kids at Guang Yu became my favorite. They would come into the classroom during my lunch break and hang out with me. One day, three boys came in with a chocolate surprise. They said, "Here, this is for ... read more

Sorry about the technical glitch... It turned out it didn't lose the other half and the photos, it just published the first half of the text. I must have hit some key combination that set things in motion, sort of... Anyway, here is the real blog! Tourists in our own town We had decided to spend the weekend of my birthday at our favourite hotel in Dalian. The first problem was that the school’s University Fair was that weekend and Dianne wanted to volunteer to help the students with their registration procedures or any other help they needed. Then we got an invite to the Diwali celebrations from one of our colleagues. Diwali, the festival of lights, is an important Hindu festival and they like to celebrate with family and friends. It was to be held ... read more

Since coming to China, adaptation has been key to any successes enjoyed. Being viewed as an expendable commodity, even with plenty of experience and qualifications, has been the hardest truth to swallow. A little sweeter on the ego though has been the celebrity status granted my presence for nothing more than having blue eyes and white skin. You can never grow tired of such attention, whether it be excitable teenagers or giggling mothers. It cannot fail to boost self-confidence levels. With any positive though, there’s always a negative, and like any ‘z’ list celebrity I’m sure would tell you, with ‘fame’ comes plenty of mocking and abuse. Up until now, I’ve taken the mocking and constant gawping in my stride and with only weeks left in the ‘Middle Kingdom,’ I thought I would leave with my ... read more

so we arrived in xi'an, i gave a gift from my tea girl to her father at the airport. after that we went to HanYangLing Mausoleum, it is the only museum where you could go downstairs and stand on glass to see what were buried for Emperor's afterlife. that was the impressive! later that day we finished my going to Big Wild Goose Pagoda, which is the most famous and popular Buddhist temple in Xi'an. then we ate at the most amazing buffet dinner ever at our amazing hotel. it was a great day! the next day we woke up early, had breakfast and then headed out for the day. we first stopped at a factory that makes terra-cotta warriors like they use to in the ancient days. then off to the Terra-cotta Army Museum. the ... read more

Drinking in China has always been a minefield of potentially explosive situations. Even after learning the drinking customs and the consequences they bring, drinking in China still brings about new experiences that surprise me. I was recently sitting in a local bar with friends, contemplating the merits of English classes that day. As we exchanged stories regarding the questionable behaviour of students and their parents, a procession of eight young Chinese girls entered the bar. They were dressed to impress with high heels, short skirts, and enough make-up to make a clown wince. These beauties wouldn’t look out of place on a night out anywhere in Britain, but here in China, their appearance could only mean one thing: they were prostitutes. Like a police line-up, they sauntered up to the table behind me and stood in ... read more

well a few nights ago me and my german girl walked to get dinner. it was a really nice night, and we were walking on the beach. then she had to stop by an atm, where we saw this woman with her little dog. they were both wearing strips, so we had to get a picture of them! haha! after that we went to youhome to find green friendly product labels. it was hilarious! the workers in the store had no idea what we were doing, and they didn't know enough english to ask. we got some strange looks, but she got here homework done. i also found a box of condoms that read" medicated for long love making. she took a picture of it haha i also recently made a trip to the forest zoo, ... read more

so we got to Beijing on a thursday night. headed to the hotel and then went to their buffet for dinner. it was the best buffet i ever remember going to! Indian, Japanese, Chinese, and American food. it was delicious! i typically am not a buffet person, but this one was wicked good. the next day we woke up early and had breakfast. then we headed out to the Forbidden City. that was pretty interesting. i took a lot of pictures, and fought my way through the crowds to get good pictures. after that we went to the square across the street. it was by some government buildings. then off to the silk market! i love shopping here, everything is so cheap. i am also pretty damn good at bartering. i got shoes, jeans, a belt ... read more

Next time we do a holiday, I will try to post pictures a bit faster! Once you get back to work and day to day life, this sure gets put on the back burner, but the memories of our holiday have not. The second half of the Autumn Festival holiday started off on another drizzly day in Shanghai. Even though we knew the weather was not going to be nice, we were still hoping for some sun. But no, so mbreelas in hand, we headed off in a cab to the train station. We considered briefly taking a quick taxi to the Metro and the subway to the train, but in the end realized that it would be a lot of hassle of suitcases, backpacks and transfers. The train station was easy and not a long ... read more

I have lost track of the weeks but I have gotten better about the days. October has come and gone like a leaf in the wind. I have taken this time to really soak up China and now I finally feel at home. More or less. Traffic I find that I always choose a taxi with the most aggressive driver. Where that would have originally scared the bajeezus out of me, now I think, yeah, he knows how to drive! There have been a few close calls where I thought we would hit a motorcyclist or a person crossing the street. People here, though they have guts, are sometimes very oblivious when crossing. Horns go off right and left. That has always annoyed me, even back home, and it's more obnoxious here. Especially when I'm crossing ... read more
