The crew has finally checked in for the night. Jet lag caught up finally at 8pm which is 7am Houston time. They looked liked they pulled a all nighter. Aunt Amana started talking in a deep slow voice at the table and my mom was nodding off in mid-sentence. Carolyn hit the sack at 6pm. Uncle Leslie he running on fumes still talking about running the streets we will see. A recap of the day...... It all began at the airports I hear. Carolyn decided to travel with a giant and heavy carry-on this caused major issue for the DFW team. So they call the Houston team to get cell phone help about what to do. They made it to LAX but major drama happened in the security line again Uncle Leslie escaped it all by ... read more

I spend such a lot of time describing our travels on travel blogs - it seems like all we do is travel. The Chinese teachers in my office just shake their heads at the amount that we have seen in two years. One of them told me a saying in Chinese which basically means that when you borrow a book, you want to read it quickly; when you own it, you savour it slowly. We are definitely borrowing China for these few years and want to see as much as we can of this amazing country. But most of our time is day to day; work, shopping, sports and I guess what everyone does no matter where you live. Now in our second year, we are into daily life in small town China. It is still ... read more

Our Sleepover in KaiFaQu Our last minute flurry of travel before we leave China began with a simple overnighter in KaiFaQu, the development zone of Dalian. An early Qinggui into town got us to The Real Eddie’s for brunch, one of our favourite activities. Their brunch is a bit different from most. Rather than a massive spread with a lot of different choices, brunch consists of the regular menu! For a fixed price, you can choose anything you want. The portions may be a little smaller and may not be quite as elaborate as when served as individual dishes, but the fact that you can choose as many as you want makes it superb. The items are cooked fresh rather than sitting in chafing dishes. Because you don’t heap your plate with a little of a ... read more

I admit it--I've been slack. Almost 8 months slack. I apologize (to you family members and friends who keep asking me where my blog is)--I'm sorry! Things got pretty crazy. But here's an entry just for you, probably my last one from China. 1. CHINA: I'll start with the beginning of the year: it was absolute chaos. We have a whole new system in place this year (we changed from a linear to a semester program), we had new policies in place, and we had an extra class to teach, and bigger classes. September to November are pretty much a blur; the only thing I really remember is going to Shanghai with my friend Jessica for the week break, and having my first-ever surprise party for my 30th birthday. Everyone was very burnt out by November, ... read more

It has been one of those weeks where I somehow managed to burn money like there was no tomorrow. Now let me get something straight before I start on my rant. I don't have a problem with spending money, I only get irritated when I feel the money I spent could have been spent better another way and that is what happened a lot this week. It wasn't that the sights I saw weren't beautiful, some were astounding, but it was a combination of too little time at some attractions, or taking the more expensive option at others when it turned out that I could have had the same experience for half the money. The overall effect is the same, one walks around with this gnawing feeling in the back of ones head which detracts from ... read more

I wasn't going to write about our winter holiday but changed my mind. It has been a while since I wrote anything and there were some noteworthy happenings during our visit to Canada, so here goes. Of course, the main reason for going back during the holidays instead of going south to warmer climates is the six grandchildren. Other family members are great too, but they know us (maybe too well). Maintaining the relationship with the grandchildren is important. Skype helps, but there is no substitute for being there. Probably the most significant happening since I last wrote was Dianne's decision that this was her last year at Maple Leaf. It was a tough decision because she really enjoys her work and we have had a great time in China. But time marches on and she ... read more

Most of our colleagues at Maple Leaf planned on hitting the beaches of southeast Asia and other tropical places, but how can we leave China without experiencing the ultimate Chinese festival?? Spring Festival (Chinese New Years) in China was the goal for this year's winter holiday. That plus our good friends from Calgary wanting to spend some of their travel time with us set the agenda for our five week winter holiday. Richard and Buff arrived on January 13 -it was so great to spend some time with friends from home and show them where we live and work. They loved the small restaurants and local markets despite little or no heat in the -15 C weather. Good thing they brought down jackets, gloves and scarves. Little did we know that they would be still ... read more
