Today we headed back to the provincial office. On the way, each family in the group compared notes on how the day and night went. The ride to the office seemed to take forever - traffic in Wuhan has gotten much worse since we were here three years ago when we got Sophia. And Isabella had fooled everyone by being the quiet cute baby on the first day. Today, she proved that she could be noisy as the other girls. She was tired, hungry and very fussy the entire time on the bus and she made sure that the whole bus could hear her and more. At one point, we even had to take her to the back of the bus to change her diaper only to find out that wasn’t the reason she was ... read more

Hello everyone! Today finally arrived and we have a moment’s reprieve, with our two angels napping, to be able to recount today’s events. Yvonne and Sophia were awake again at 4:00am and tried to keep quiet as long as they could so that Anthony could sleep. We met the rest of our group this morning at the hotel’s breakfast buffet, which consisted of the usual assortment of Chinese and Western foods ranging from tripe and congee to eggs and pancakes. At 9:00, we all met our rep, Joanna, in the hotel lobby to take the 45-minute bus ride to the government building where our babies were waiting. Traffic in this city is almost as bad as the 405 Freeway during rush hour. It looks as if it were choreographed - the way the buses, trucks, ... read more

Easter Sunday, yes, yes, it's Easter. This morning I had a pretty nice time reflecting on Easter, reading, and had a nice conversation; however, the rest of the day was, well, less than desirable (some of it was quite nice). I went to lunch with Ms. Jenny (Australian lady who also teaches at my unversity), Ben (British guy who also teaches at my university), and Ms. Jenny's friend Joy (Australian). We went to a really nice restaurant, and the food was really good! I ate some kind of strange bug thing that made me feel adventurous and not so bad about eating western foods like salmon and cake. I always enjoy spending time with Ms. Jenny and Ben so that was nice, but they're still not the same as my old friends--it's like there is this ... read more

Deut 3.22 Wow, I've been here almost a whole month! I've had so many amazing experiences and a few...not so amazing experiences. I discovered about two seconds after my internet was hooked up that Livejournal is blocked here--it has taken me the duration of this month to get over the shock and to mourn. I think I'm better, and now I've decided to use this blog to keep in touch with everyone. There are so, so, so many things that I want to tell everyone about...I've no clue where to start! Here's a very quick run through of the past month! My flight getting here was quite eventful, but I finally made it. I had delays in Savannah, Atlanta, and L.A! I got stuck in L.A. for a whole day and had many fights with ... read more

Hi again all... Well After a long train ride I made it to Wuhan...While I was on the train I met a nice Chinese girl name Pei Pei... She was in Shanghai for business and was now returning back to Wuhan where she lives... When we got off the train she helped me find a hotel close to the train station... And after that she even helped me find a place to get my laundry done... She helped me do all this before she went home... I must say that she was a inspiration... And what a kind person... She even offered to show me around Wuhan the next day and I accepted... After Pei Pei left to go home I went to look around the city... Now, I don't think that Wuhan is an impressive ... read more

Day 187, 4th December Wuhan Woke up feeling somewhat better and also that the fever/illness, or whatever it was, had subsided greatly. For the first time I started to wonder what I was doing here, in central China. Was it all real? Had we really cycled 9,000 miles over 10 time zones and spent almost 200 days together without actually killing each other? My drowsy brain had difficulty computing such thoughts. I could only seriously think of having a nice cup of Yorkshire tea, I still had one emergency teabag left, some powdered milk, sugar, and there was a big Chinese flask next to my bed full of freshly boiled water. My last tea bag! And then to any Englishmans horror - arrrrgggghh! The powdered milk congealed into clots! The stuff had gone off! I’d forgotten ... read more

Day 185, 2nd December Xianhondian - Hekou - Huangpi Woke up to more fireworks courtesy of Rory! After we’d packed up the tents and proud that we’d gone un-noticed, we set off on our bikes for another days cycling through “picture-book” China. There were chickens and pigs running about everywhere and those strange looking oxen with the shiny black horns in the fields. My guts were still really bad and I had to stop to produce liquid-gold regularly! The types of vegetation was changing as rapidly as my guts too; few palms were now appearing and many tropical-looking wax-leaved plants dotted the hedgerows. In the small town of Hekou Rory discovered the biggest and the best fireworks ever in a small shop. One spiral of bangers the size of a wheel boasted ten-thousand explosions, and mega-bangers ... read more

November 5th 2006 Waking up at the crack of 6:25am with a full 8 hours of sleep to try and catch the first tram down the mountain was our hope. That unfortunately was not the case. For the second night in a row we were trapped in a hotel room on a floor full of drunken Chinese tourists screaming up and down the halls. They finally stopped around 1:00 am and started again at 3:30. We would have had a hot shower before we left in the morning but were informed the night before that this fine 4 star hotel (YupinLou Hotel - would not recommend) only had hot water between 7:30-9:30 pm the previous night and none for the morning. Upon arriving at the tram precisely at 7:00am we found the attendants weren’t there yet. ... read more

The bus took 5 hours to get to Wuhan from Yichang, 1 hour of it spent crawling through Wuhan traffic. When we arrived, no taxis would take us to Wuhan Pathfinder Hostel; eventually a woman in a private car who was hanging around the taxi rank took us for 20Y, which is way too much for the length of journey. She didn't know where it was and we had a badly printed map from the internet. We took a wrong turn and she seemed to be getting exasperated. Bet she was wishing she'd charged 30Y! We knew it was somewhere near an art gallery and had the Chinese words for 'Beijing National Art Gallery' in the text of our Rough Guide. She sussed what we were trying to convey and got us to where we needed ... read more

We got straight off the boat and onto a bus to Yichang, which we were told would take 3 hours, but much to our delight only took about 45 minutes. We decided to keep moving and got on another bus straight away to Wuhan. We arrived that evening in Wuhan. We found a motel (3 stars apparently) just a few hundred metres from the bus station. This was the first time we hadn't booked our accomodation in advance. We spent that evening wandering around the city centre and we visited a street market. Certainly not the most exciting place we have visited. The next morning after checking out, we made a quick decison that instead of heading north towards Tai Shan, that we would try and get a bus to Huang Shan. So we headed to ... read more
