I am slacking on my journal writing, sorry. Saturday we all lounged around and watched some movies we have bought. I tried my hand at cooking at my place and we made dumplings for lunch. Sarah and I have agreed to tutor the daughter of the Vice President of the college. Her name is meng lin and she is 16. She attends the foreign language school in Wuhan and is in her third year. She has studied for a year in australia so she has a chinese/australian accent. She is very curious about American culture because it is her hope to attend American university to study international relations and economics, maybe even journalism. This session we discussed American colleges vs. university and explained what liberal arts colleges are. She has done much research about schools and ... read more

Today, I went to a Birthday party for one of my classes. I guess I should start from the beginning: On Friday, I was playing a getting to know you game with my class where I was letting them ask me any question that they wanted. This allowed me to a) hear them speak and get an idea of how proficient they are and b) get a lot of their curiosities out of the way. One of them asked me if I like parties, so I said yes. They then invited me to their class party on Sunday at 7pm, in their classroom. Rock on! After class, 2 students came up and asked if I wanted to go shopping with them in my free time. Since I am anxious to get to know some of my ... read more

Since none of us have to teach class on Thursdays, we decided that Wednesday night would be perfect for checking out one of the many local karaoke bars. We started the evening off with a dinner that was more eventful than delicious. It started with a mystery dish that Nick tried (and quickly spat out). In retrospect, I think it was the local dish duck neck. We ordered a chicken hot pot style meal that came complete with feet (very tricky to get any real meat) and bones bones bones. If you have ever wondered what happens to the discarded bones and skin of all of the boneless, skinless chicken that we eat at home, it is in China. And it was in our dinner. About 1 in every 5 chunks actually had some meat on ... read more

I am currently listening to the drive, it streams live world wide so of course we listen. Just thought I would share that with you all. Yesterday Sarah and I walked around campus and the town and took photos of the area. Today I had another oral english class. When I walked in they all clapped and cheered. This job is such an ego boost :) they also told me I am lovely and they want to be my friend. The computer in my classroom was busted so they didnt get to see my pictures but I shared a lot about myself. I had to write my syllabus on the board and the chalk gave me a cough, I dont know how teachers do it! They asked about my childhood, my school, if i fight with ... read more

This morning I was happy to sleep in until 10 when I heard a rapid knocking on my door. I assumed it was Laura wanting to borrow something so I just called out 'hold on' while I threw on some lounging clothes and ran to the door. It turns out that it was one of my students wanting to talk with me for office hours. Whoops! I still dont know what day it is and I thought it was Thursday not realizing I had set my office hours each Wednesday here from 10-12. So I welcomed Rita in while I was still wearing my retainer and lounging clothes and we talked. It turns out that my students think that my rules and assignments are strict. Who knew people would think I am strict. I guess that ... read more

Tuesday was my first day of school. I had my oral English class at 10am. I was definitely a little nervous, because I had no idea what to expect. Nick and Katie had warned me that the writing classes were less willing to participate and speak in class (since it was writing, not oral English). My fears were immediately assuaged when I walked into a room of smiling faces. They greeted me warmly and seemed very eager to learn. I had them write down their English names so I could take attendance. Most of their names were “normal” names, although I do have a Story and a Bird. Bird is my player. He is one of only 4 boys in a class with 26 girls. He sat in the back and gave me a “wha-zup” hand ... read more

We have been doing a lot of exploring since we got here. Here are a few pictures to whet your appetite. I need to start taking pictures with people in them. I did the same thing one Asian Term. I started by taking a lot of pictures of the buildings and things. I had to laugh because the few pictures that I have of myself and the group are when we are eating. Go figure.... read more

I hope everyone had a great labor day!! Today, tuesday, I had my second class at 8am. I was later than I would have liked because I am not feeling great, I think muslim noodle place is bad tummy food, so I woke up later and took forever getting ready just cause I am not myself. My students in my writing class were much quieter than my first oral english class but their skill level seems to be better than the other class. Many of my students are 21 and 20 so they are a little older. Some cool names were Nash, Sunny (a girl), Birtha, Orchid, Belinda and Daphne. I ran this class similarly to the previous class with introductions which took more time because their skill level is better and they had more to ... read more

Hi Everyone! So it's been a week since I've left the States and life is good. I haven't started teaching yet but I found out that when I do (sometime after the 10th) I'll be teaching graduate students conversational English. I'll have 3 different classes twice a week for two hours each class (12 hours total). I also already have a tutoring job with the daughter of the VP of the university. She's 16 and already speaks English very well. She's live in Australia for a couple years and in the U.S. for a couple summers. She plans to go to the U.S. for undergrad and just wants help with her writing/speaking. The food is great here though sometimes my stomach doesn't agree. Wuhan is known for its spicy food so even though there isn't a ... read more
