We spent Christmas and New year in Hainan at the Rainbow Bar. The Rainbow bar is a pretty cool place, it's right on the water. A wicked band plays some decent tunes. The guitar player was especially good. Also the beer is worthy of note. We enjoyed hanging out at the western bar, "Rainbow." I (Mazi) have to say we splurged a little going to Rainbow Bar a few times just to bring back some western food in our diet. The bar was decored with flags of hockey teams, license plates from Canada and the states, western food is not bad for being in China but this place does not have the western cocktails down to perfection. Although it did a great job it never is the same as back home. We did feel a little ... read more

After the Kayak episode, we were ready to head away from Sanya and away from the tourist trap. So we headed off the next day to the Jianfengling Rainforest. It was an interesting journey that took us 4 hours with three different modes of transportation. Geoff and I hopped on a long distance bus to a small town, we thought this would be more relaxing than sitting at the beach. As we were thinking positive about our Hainan experience, the bus driver made us get off several towns early because there was no one else on the bus. So, the bus hostess in her bright pink suit and high-heels escorted us through hawkers and crowds of locals to a "mini bus" to the town we were trying to get to as directed in the Lonely Planet. ... read more

Hi everyone, We've been in Sanya for about 6 days now and are just getting ready to get the train back to Guangzhou and then on to Hong Kong until saturday when we are finally leaving for Thailand! I'd like to say that we have travelled all over the island and done alot of sight seeing but that would be a lie as we've actually just been lying on a beach all day every day and then having a few beers in the evening with everyone else who is staying here. The other day me and lucy were feeling slightly hungover and were getting extremely pissed off with the annoying little children who were sat next to us on the beach as it can be quite crowed, so we looked around and decided to walk futher ... read more

Palm trees and white sand beaches combined with lots of noise and the fact that it’s a little dirty reminds you that you are still in China despite being in paradise. This sums up our beach destination at Sanya. In fact, the staff at the Blue Sky Youth Hostel greet you with, "Welcome to Paradise!" Sanya is also a popular destination for vacationing Russians and the city is geared towards this population of tourists. This was easily determined when most often we were approached by vendors and hawkers speaking Russian first and then realizing we didn't understand, if they could, they spoke in Engish. An interesting mix of culture nonetheless. The colourful, and matching floral outfits worn by Chinese love birds created a vibrant scenery at the beach. The main beach Dadonghai is beautiful. The water ... read more

hi everyone, We have finally arrived in Sanya and the weather is lush and probably worth the horrific train journey here. On Saturday afternoon, Sunday and Monday we were in Hangzhou. On Sunday we walked the whole way round the West Lake which is pretty but quite touristy. We just stuck our headphones in and danced the whole way around. At about 12 we took a brake for lunch and I (Lucy) had some clear gloopy soup that just tasted of gelatine, so after 2 spoonfulls i opted for the much safer but less filling option of candy floss. Then on Monday we walked around the hills near the lake which were much quieter and had some really nice views. In the evening we went to the train station to catch our first train to Nanchang. ... read more

4 October 08 Okay, so we travelled 1127 km on a train from Guangzhou, across the sea to Hainan to fly a 5mtr power kite on the beach at Sanya. As our train drew further south we left behind the 36 degree heat of Guangzhou and woke to dull weather for the first time since Lijiang. The train bumped on until it came to a standstill at the end of China and we wondered how we were going to get over the sea to Hainan. I thought that maybe it would be a bit like going over to Lindsfarne when the tide was out, Chris thought it would either be a tunnel or a bridge. Neither of us were right. It appears that the train carriages are unhooked and each carriage is pulled onto a large ... read more

Having a week off in celebration of China's National Week gave us an opportunity to travel to the tropical resort island called Hainan to the city of Sanya. Sanya is the southernmost city in Hainan (海南) province, China. Luckily our 4 day excursion ended up sandwiching right between 2 typhoons so the weather was beautiful. The typhoon activity here in Asia seems to have picked up much like the hurricane activity of the U.S. After a smooth one hour and twenty minute flight from Guangzhou we landed and took a taxi to our hotel. Easy enough, especially for a couple of misfit Mississippians making their way through southern China. As with most all holidays in China there are lots of families traveling. Sanya proved to be a beautiful retreat spot with plenty of sun and sand. ... read more

I originally intended this post to be a lighthearted continuation of my visit to Hainan, but given the recent tragedy of the earthquake, I wanted to shift gears a bit. So enjoy the pictures which still hold that former mood, but I also hope you continuing reading and see my impressions of the last few days. Part of the reason for putting up this last post (which also explains the haste and sloppiness of the entry, I apologize) is to simply let everyone know, friends and family, that I am 100% fine and unharmed after the quake. To give a few details in case you haven't seen it enough in the news lately, a catastrophic 7.8 earthquake struck southwest Sichuan Province. As of today the death toll has surpassed 20,000 people however Xinhua, China's governmental mouth ... read more

A few pretty significant events have happened in the last couple of weeks here in China that (fortunately) I was not apart of, but could have very well been. The first occurred a few weeks ago when a fairly severe typhoon struck the island of Hainan. This was just one week before we went there for our vacation. Luckily the storm did not disrupt any of our plans and we had a great time. I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Secondly, the Olympic torch landed in Sanya, Hainan last week. We were not aware of it at the time, but we were in a hotel overlooking the airport where initial ceremony was held. Unfortunately, we left the island the day before the torch arrived so we did not see anything exciting. The final event ... read more
