Hi again fowks, this blogging thing has been running into all sorts of delays and hiccups, not sure where the blame lies. Could be me, not a lot of time with work and socializing and that, could be the computer….one thing all should know about China….nothing works…including our PC. We had a big ass system crash after having a shop in town fix a couple of things, so muggings here spent the better part of two weeks trying to install dodgy Chinese windows (you know what I mean) and then installing all those little bits of essential software. Then we ran into driver issues and couldn’t get online except at work (where the PCs are virus ridden). So my apologies to any who have been waiting and waiting. Not sure where to start, we’ve been up ... read more

The school decided to let us off with a week! A whole week to not teach and also to give us some spending money, so wasn't going to pass off this opputunity to get out of the province. Felt like Yunnan was getting too small for me in relation to traveling. So I looked up on the good old c-trip for cheap flights and one of the cheapest was to Guiyang which I had never heard about and there was barely any information in the lonely planet book, but it seemed like the best idea so decided to take full advantage of it. So a early morning flight to Guiyang was the go ahead, we some how nearly missed the flight even though we were at the airport hours early but got distracted by others. Guiyang ... read more

Dear reader, to give you a taste of life on the road in China... Wednesday 10th October. We haul ourselves from bed at around 7 o'clock, and start the packing up process. We fill water bottles and eat cakes, fruit and sweet fortified milk, bought the previous evening, as a precursor to breakfast. Next a visit to the local market, to restock with fruit and snacks for the day ahead, and to search out steamed stuffed dumpings to complete breakfast. And then the climb over into the next valley begins. The road today winds for about 40 km in a series of broad, sweeping zig zags, through wooded mountainside, peppered with rice and corn fields. As the slope curves away gently above it is possible to see only one or two stretches of road above. Eventually, ... read more

Your asia correspondents calling from Guanling, to the north-east of Kunming. Since we last spoke we cycled back down to Kunming, via some good roads and through fine scenery. We then headed east, visiting the Stone Forest at Shilin. Not petrified or fossilised forest as you might expect, but weirdly-eroded stone formations. The local Yi people have woven some of the formations into their mythology and have ascribed names to them, such as "Petrified Woman waiting for Husband", though the likenesses are not immediately apparent. Or apparent full stop. You may judge for yourselves once I get the photos uploaded. I did note from a TV travelogue that the Yi are particularly partial to a knees-up and sing-song around the fire, with a drop of he hard stuff. Seems to me that they should take it ... read more

Hello gente, Just writing a quick note to let those who by some stroke of fate might be thinking about me and whether or not i'm still alive or lost out in the world. I assure you i am thriving and quite alive, just busy out my ears lately, and by lately, i mean all the time. i apologise for not writing for a good long while, and if things quiet down or i feel i've made enough language progress then perhaps i'll write an update summarising all of the crasiness and interesting things that have been taking place in my life here in guiyang/southeast guizhou. my mama bird came and visited me for a week, which was the most recent topic of interest, but anyway, i've got to continue studying! sorry, just a couple of ... read more

Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well. (this is Brigid by the way) Anyhow just quick note to say what we have been up to. We are teaching 5 days a week about 15hr to 18hr all different ages and levels. Teaching is fun and I am getting used to it. The school is ok but the investor can be a very tight pocketed. As a result the resources are not great and the Chinese staff get paid fuck all. This is a shame because everyone works hard but I suppose from what I have seen business in china is about making money with out a thought for the people involved. I would have thought quality would be more important. However saying this all the people I work with are lovely and David ... read more

Hey folks, Been a little while huh? We’ve been sooooo busy at the school, we’ve had the summer school, which is just about to finish, yay!! Yeh, just in case you don’t know, B n B are in China now, we’re both teaching English to the best of our ability, but it can be a little tricky at times. The city we’re living in is called Guiyang; it’s in the South West, small city, not as developed as some in China. The reasons for coming here? The countryside surrounding the city is that kinda romantic, poetic, cloudy, hilly terrain that I’ve always pictured in my mind when I’ve thought about China. It’s like something from the Monkey TV series (which, by the way is based on a real Chinaman going to India and back to bring ... read more

Guiyang: My days here in Guiyang consist of roughly 10+ hours of teaching. I teach 20+ aspiring English Tour Guides the English language (in the context of Tourism, etc...) from 9:00am-5:30pm, with a 2 hour break for lunch and time to prep for the following day’s class. Though I am tired to the point of losing all abilities of comprehension, I love every minute of this lively and non-stop existence, here in this organic, thriving city of Guiyang. In total honesty, being here in the south of China makes me want to never return to Beijing, with its grey clouds, hot and oven-like feel, and lonely distance. It’s also a blast being the only 老外in town, with the exception of Shannon, my classmate and fellow teacher here at Guiyang Normal University, situated in comfortable walking distance ... read more
