My class announced that they wouldn't be in class on the following Friday because they were going to a sports meeting and I was confused. I couldn't figure out why the whole class would be going to a meeting during my class time! It turns out a sports meeting is a track meet. The whole university, all 21 colleges, took part, including some teachers. The opening ceremony was quite a show. Each college had at least 70 - 100 students marching in formation behind big signs naming the faculty. There was music playing over the P.A. system and lots of cheering from the crowds. By the time it was finished there were at least 2500 people on the field. You really had to be there to appreciate it! The rest of the meet was similar to ... read more

We had a wonderful potluck dinner on Saturday, Nov.17 at the home of our American friends, to celebrate Thanksgiving. There were Americans, Australians, Chinese and Canadians there; young and old, students and teachers. Turkeys are very hard to come by in Nanning but we hardly missed one because of the variety of food that was offered. We had chicken, fish, rice, vegetable soup, mashed potatoes, stuffing and many more things. One woman bought a huge cake which was decorated with 2 turkeys on the top, so we did have 'turkey' of some sort. Just wanted to let you all know that, although it was late, we did have a Thanksgiving meal, and I thought of all of my 'old' friends, and family, while I was celebrating with my new friends. After supper we went off to ... read more

Hi folks, Teaching at Guangxi University is a great experience. It's such a beautiful place with wonderfully warm days and nights, who wouldn't love it! Since Mid-Autumn Festival the weather has cooled off; it's now around 29 during the day and goes down to 14 - 16 at night and the humidity has dropped considerably. We Northern Ontarians would say it was a lovely summer day, but the students are finding the mornings cold - they come to class wearing long sleeves and jackets. I have five sections of first-year oral English, 3 sections of second-year oral English, and 2 sections of first-year writing; a total of 20 hours a week. There are about 26 students in each class. My classes start at 7:50 each day but Tuesday, when I start at 10:30. We have a ... read more

Because the Chinese National Day holiday is three days long, many people make up work-time on the weekend before to enable them to have a full week off work, hence 'Golden Week'. We were lucky enough to be invited to travel to Tiandong and Baise (about 4 hours northwest of Nanning) by a wonderful Chinese Ph.D student. He invited us to attend his senior middle school's 70th anniversary celebration. We also got to experience many wonderful things. The pictures tell all. ... read more

Domestic Life in Guangxi We have received some inquiries regarding our accommodations and lifestyle now that we are residents at Guangxi University. We are living in a small apartment on the second floor of a three story apartment building. We have a living room/eating area, den, bedroom, tiny kitchen and a Western bathroom with toilet, bath/shower, and sink. Our kitchen and bathroom are tiled, while the other rooms have wall-to-wall blue carpeting. We have hot running water in the bathroom and running water in the kitchen but only cold. We have a 4.5 litre electric water heater/kettle because we can’t drink the water from the tap. This kettle is great because after it boils it will keep the water hot - great for making tea or instant coffee. Unfortunately, that’s the only kind of coffee we’ve ... read more

Public Health Care takes on new meaning here. We had to go for a mandatory health check-up last week and to our surprise it was not on campus but at a special facility called Infection Control. It was a 40 minute bus ride away but luckily we had our student helpers with us. We had to fill out a lengthy questionnaire to which we had to affix our picture and then pay approximately $65. Then off we went to the next building. There we entered a long hall with seating on one side and doors off the other. There was a room for taking blood, for x-ray, ECG, abdominal check, and eyes, ears, nose and throat. At each door was a line of people and we joined them. As each was called everyone else watched as ... read more

Hi Folks, We're finally here! What a long trip it was, 17.5 hours flying time, 2 hours waiting in Vancouver, and an overnight in Hong Kong; then another hour flight and we landed in Nanning. The two hours in Vancouver wasn't so bad, the airport is quite lovely. Trees, bushes, and even 'a river runs through it' in the International side. Hong Kong airport was very big but didn't feel rushed or crowded. We were so glad we had booked the airport hotel though. We were quite tired and it was only a 3 minute walk through the terminal to the hotel, and what a hotel it was. Very fancy, in fact it was voted the best airport hotel in Asia. We basically checked in and went to bed. Arriving in Nanning was interesting, many forms ... read more
