From a touristic MUST SEE STOP that I made in Yangshuo, I headed up north to see the famous Longji rice terraces. To avoid time killing with transfers I took a direct "onedaytrip" from Yangshuo ...just one way. So by noon I was already feasting on sticky rice, steamed in bamboo stems. What a taste! Soon (by the evening, when I of course went for another one) I learned that it's essential that the bamboo is fresh, from a clean areas like all around up here and that the dish must still be served hot (wasn't really the case with the evening dish). Anyhow...it's the gentlest taste a rice can have and hope to have another opportunity to have it some day soon! After carrying my backpack totally to the top of the village, where the ... read more

Guilin is a small city of about 670,000 people and pretty much seems to be shrouded in a constant gray fog/cloud which makes it very humid. Walking around, everything is wet, even when it hasn't been raining, and I don't just mean outside. As we were looking at hotels to find a place to stay, we slipped and slid around the lobbies and hallways. We found a place to stay that was reasonable, despite the persistent dampness of everything. We planned to stay here a couple nights and use it as a staging ground for visting the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces which are about an hour and a half away. Our first day here we scoped out the towns shopping and eating options, and ended up finding a cheaper, nicer place to stay for our second ... read more

August 25, 2007 - August 26, 2007 We were ready and waiting for our bus to Longsheng at 7:20 am and luckily we were there on time (Michelle is a very punctual person, Andy and I are not) as the bus only stopped for a minute. We spent about 30 minutes stopping at various places around town to pick up more passengers. We pulled off to the side of the road and the bus driver mumbled something in Chinese and then got off the bus. I looked at Andy and Michelle with a puzzled face and everyone immediately jumped up and bee lined it for the door. I was polite and let people get off in front of me. Little did I know, we were switching buses. By the time the three of us made it ... read more

Hi All! I've been here at Longji Terrace for a couple days, walking around in the terraced rice fields, staying in a wooden building, built post and beam... Uh oh, my massage appointment is here... gotta go... AAAAHHHHH... That was very nice, now it is hard to be online and not sleeping , so this will be brief. Made my way around yesterday and today in thesee fields and villages, and will head out tomorrow to Guilin, then Nanning the following day to check out the sugar cane pulp product factory near there. The stay here has been fun... good food, nice people, though a bit aggressive on the selling of their stuff. Great weather, too. A few clouds today, but nice and warm. The place I'm staying, run by a woman named Among, is very ... read more

There was only one working bulb in the center of the room. It wasn't too bad during the day but at night it felt like a prison cell. I went down to ask the owner if we could move one room over. She came up to confirm the lights were not working and said she'd send her husband up to fix it. (This is the way these things are run. It's a wife/husband team. He's the fix-it guy and she takes the money, just like in America.) Anyway it's about 8:00 p.m. and ... read more
