Day 5 - A relaxing day, and a 'hot cupping' experience I have felt like I have been rushing and on the go since leaving work on Friday, so last night and today I have allowed myself some quiet time! I started by having an easy early night.... Hhhmmmmmm.... Enjoyed that long sleep too. I started watching The Hobbit on my iPad, but didn't actually get to see very much of it! All the young ones were partying in the bar, here at Monkey Jaynes. Get on it....whilst you physically and mentally can! That's what I think! So I started off this morning with a lush breakfast. Scrambled egg with toast, cucumber and tomato..... Fruit with yoghurt, mango juice, and then caPer it off with a cup of fresh green tea! I sat there for, what ... read more

Day 4 - Hike up to Moon Hill We did manage a bit of a lay in this morning 8.10! Whilst waiting my turn for the shower, I woke myself up with a nice cuppa. We went off for breakfast in Monkey Jaynes, my omlette was nice, but not everyone's meals came in time. We had to leave before theirs came as we needed to set off for Moon Hill at 9.30. The first part of the home was to pick up our bikes. We had an 8km bike ride to get there. Moon Hill was just as I expected it to be! I was thinking about Nadia and Vietnam, all the way up. There were 8 if in the group, and Sally, the guide. It was a hard, uphill hike. There are 900 steps. It ... read more

Day 3 - leaving Hong Kong for Yangshuo The leaving journey was a shock! The backpack was a killer: far too heavy! Three underground train journeys, then an overground train which took about 2 hours later, we were all struggling. We crossed the China border which was all a bit surreal on foot. The rep was stuck in traffic, so we were hanging in the unknown for a while, we were unsure if the overnight bus would wait for us, but again, it all worked out in the end. Finally, the rep arrived and 5 taxis took us to the waiting, and very much delayed, overnight bus. We boarded the bus and took our bed for the night. I was pleasantly surprised with the overnight stint. It gave me a chance to catch up on the ... read more

Fede and Pete had no idea how to organise a trip to Guilin, so they opted for the cheesy all-in-one guided tour package option. The kind where you get herded around like a flock of sheep by a lady waving a flag and constantly shouting orders through a microphone amongst countless other tour guides shouting through their microphones. The kind where you get told when it is time to take photographs, and get given 5 minutes exactly to do so, preferably making the peace sign and grinning wildly. The kind where you let your brain hibernate for a week, while you get told exactly where, when and how to enjoy yourself. But also, as you can see from the photos and videos, the kind where the natural scenery is something quite spectacular, if you can imagine ... read more

Day 8 (Thurs 13thSept) Today is the day I have left Hong Kong and headed north into mainland China. I woke up early as I had to be out of my room by 11am and be all packed up and ready to go. Around 12 o’clock I fetched my bag from the hostel and headed to the MTR, which I was to get from Causeway Bay all the way to Lo Wu, which is the last stop before the border into China. This took around an hour or so and at the other end greeted by customs. Once through customs you’re in Luo Ho, Shenzhen. I stopped for a bit of lunch in the metro station on the Chinese side of the border for my first attempt at duck while I’ve been here. Ordered and sat ... read more

Having had a good go at the North Eastern side of China, it was time to throw ourselves into the hidden treasures of China's Southern cities: Guilin and Yangshuo!! Now, China is big. Beijing in itself is the same size as Belgium... and that's just one of it's cities. Pretty bloody huge! So when planning our trip we thought, yeah let's just hop onto this train to Guilin.. Hopping on actually means giving away 24 hours of your life to lying between an ironing board and the roof of a train. Luckily we relish such challenges anyway so we made friends with a Mexican and played many word games to keep us going, feasting on instant noodles! (It sounds like sacrilege eating instant noodles here but it's their equivalent to sandwiches! Everywhere you go they provide ... read more

Rivers, karsts, bamboo-rafts, rock climbing, cycling,......

Crossing the border at Shengzhen herded through scanning machines and filling in forms so they can trace me if I bring in the Swine Flu. Just make it to the bus and manage to get all my things on in time. Driver comments on the size of my luggage and asks if I didn’t wish that I played the violin. We laugh and I sleep on a bus with beds all the way to Guilin, arriving just in time to catch Bradford at his apartment on his way to work. He makes me comfortable and heads off to teach a class of university students. Sit on his couch sipping green tea. Later take a walk around campus. Loudspeakers blaring Chinese pop muzak and intermittent disk jockey’s singsong voice flowing out across basketball courts and classrooms. Bradford ... read more

Guilin's Daxu Ancient Village The Daxu Ancient Village located Southwest of Guilin city in Guangxi Province was built during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), and is my second home. Since I am lucky enough to actually live in Guilin, I get to visit Daxu often. I have many old friends there, and every time I return to this beautiful village, the word that I am back in town spreads quickly, and soon a lot of people come out to say hi. The children in Daxu love me and within ten minutes I usually have a group of ten or so following me around the streets. It might have something to do with the fact I usually take them out for ice cream. I think what I love about the village so much, is it's simplicity, and how ... read more
