Basia i Wojtek. Ps. ?... read more

Basia, mimo potrzeby rezygnuje. Inne panie zaciągają koszulki na nosy i, przyzwyczajone do podobnych niedogodności, odganiając chmary much wchodzą do środka. Cóż. Musi istnieć jakaś równowaga w swiecie. Jesteś ... read more

To get to the rice terraces of Longshen ( more commonly known as the Dragon Back Terraces) we were expecting to have to go into Yangshuo, catch a bus to Guilin, change bus stations and then catch another bus to the gateway of the area before a final bus into the terraces themselves. We were really pleased when the friendly Belgian guesthouse owner advised us to take the daily Chinese tour bus which would collect us at the guesthouse door and drive us straight to the entrance gate/ticket office. It probably cost a bit more at 180yuan each (this price did include the entrance fee of 80 yuan though) but for the time and hassle saved well worth it. The rice terraces rise from 300 metered above sea level to 800 meters at their highest point. ... read more

… Literally Getting Lost .... We arrived in Guilin early in the morning and according to LP just in time to catch the forward bus to Longji National Park. We did not book any accommodation so we were not sure if they would have place for us on that bus but with the winter season upon China we were pretty confident it wont be full. We tried few buses with no positive result until we stumbled across tourist agent who told us when and where the bus was leaving from. The main bus station seems to be located just in front of the Train Station in Guilin which was great news for us. We bought tickets for the bus from the same agent (40Y each) even though she was trying to charge us more than necessary. ... read more

The Flowers in Guilin was a good hostel with excellent value single rooms with shared bathroom (around 6 pounds) and a pleasant communual area to chill out in. The weekend in Guilin was relaxing with lots of sightseeing coupled with a day of Admin (laundry, internet, planning trip etc). On Monday 5th September I headed up to Dhazi, again with the help of staff at the hostel who phoned the private bus company for me and booked me a seat for 80 Yuan (8 pounds) for the 2 ½ hour journey. Located in Longsheng County, the Longji Rice Terraces are about 100 km (2 hours drive) from Guilin. The most popular are Ping An Rice Terrace and Jinkeng Rice Terrace. History of Longji Rice Terrace can be dating back to Yuan Dynasty, but most of the ... read more

Another must-see place near Guilin is the Longji Dragon’s Backbone rice terraces. Again, we were taunted with incredible iconic images of blood-red sunrises/sunsets reflecting off the amazing curves of water-filled rice terraces. One of the drawbacks of long-term travel is that you can’t always choose to be everywhere at the best time of year for weather or photography. This also illustrates the difference between 'travel photography' and 'taking photos while travelling'. In both cases you want to get the best images you can under the circumstances, but good travel photographers time their visits to give themselves the best chance to succeed. Since we really belong to the second group we’ll have to settle for the old “win some, lose some” philosophy. In December the terraces are not at their best as they are past the golden ... read more

The plan was to go to the rice terraces at Ping´an. Although I heard Ping´an is very touristic and the rice terraces near the village of Dazhai were better, I wanted to go there because I thought it would be much harder to get a bus up to that village. From there, my plan was to walk to Dazhai and experience that part. In Guilin I had to find a bus to Longsheng, from which I would take the last bus. In front of the ticket office, I met three people that were also going to Longsheng and from there to Ping´an, so we decided to travel together. In Longsheng, it turned out that we had to wait almost two hours to get a bus to Ping´an, but there was a bus going to Dazhai immediately! ... read more

Our ongoing search for somewhere to sit out the week of National Day (which was already half over) next took us to Dazhai, via 4 bus journeys and a 50 yuan entry fee to the region. The area is known for its population of Zhuang tribespeople as well as some famous rice terracing. Some of the Dazhai guesthouse owners clearly had a Yangshuo mentality and tried to charge ludicrous amounts for the (very basic) rooms they had but we found a room in a place with the cleanest shared bathrooms in the village, with an added bonus being the hot water was immediate and steaming. There are definitely only so many rice terraces you can see in 1 year without becoming inured to their charms and, as we hiked up to one of the many viewpoints ... read more
