Beihai was once among the ranks of legendary beaches in the world with its sparkling silver sand that was so loose you would sink a little into the beach every time you took a step. Stories have been told where the beach was once so clean that on a sunny day, the beach would be so bright from the reflecting sun rays that everyone would have to wear a pair of sunglasses just to be able to see. A crowd as legendary as New York City's Times Square would be sitting with umbrellas propped up in the sand and people would swim in the ocean that was so clean you could see the sand 50 feet down. Alas, these stories were from ten years ago when times were simpler and pollution hasn't peaked yet. The Beihai ... read more

I never imagine that in this season, the weather in Beihai can be so nice! I enjoyed 3days there, living in the seaside, enjoying the sun shine and eating many sea foods! In Beihai, the most famous scenic spot is called Yintai in Chinese. It means silver beach, because the sands will show as some silver things after the sun baked them. Walking along the wide silver beach, listening to the lapping waves and waiting for the sunset, I love that moment so much! I had a question in my mind for a long time and till yesterday, Cole gave me the answer. That was, I don’t know why Beihai called Beihai, it is in the southern part of Guangxi, but wide called it is northern in its name. And Cole told me that it is ... read more

When we last made a blog entry we were on our way to a local shopping district in Guilin, the Le river had flooded parts of the city and all river cruises were called off. We did indeed go to a local shopping area. Very interesting as not many tourists and many locals around. It was like a giant flea market. It was fun to meet and try to speak with the local folks. We stayed there about an hour or so and then headed to lunch. We had a nice meal ( the food in Guilin really has been the best) and then we went to a tea plantation. On the way our guide “Lewis” presented each girl with a small gift. He was so taken by our girls because they are from the same ... read more

Guangxi province is one of the most beautiful and varied provinces in China, it has the incredible limestone karsts we had marvelled at in Yangshuo, a bustling capital city Nanning and at its southern most point; the popular seaside town of Beihai, famous for it's beaches and fantastic seafood. Guangxi province also happens to be where Saskia was born, just to make it that little bit more special! In a few short days we revisited 'The Spot' where Mairi and William first met Sas, had an amazing time discovering Beihai, the town of her birth, ate some delicious seafood, and almost got arrested at Beihai airport!  Nanning Remembering So, our time at the wonderful Giggling Tree had come to an end but our exploration of Southern China was far from finished. Feeling rather tired after the ... read more

We arrived here last Saturday by over night train then bus. Lisa's family friend moved our here from Biggleswade, nearly 3 years ago and loves it, so while we were passing we thought we would visit! We were given phil's friends brand new flat to stay in, which was lovely, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large living area and even better 3 balconies to descide where to drink our evening beer! Phil and Sandy are teachers and have their own school downstairs in their flat block, we meet some of the kids which was nice, and good practise for them to speak english. one of the boys called tony is the No1 badminton player for Beihai so stu played him on thursday, poor stu today can hardly walk. We knew the Chinese were hard working but now ... read more

Moving day. The maid at the hotel had woken us up by banging on the door. Probably just as well, as we were up until 5am watching football. We had to catch the ferry to Hainan at 6pm, so we dumped our bags at reception, and took the bus into the 'centre' of Bei Hai. We found a bite to eat at a massive food hall (point to it and it comes; great for us), and then spent the afternoon walking around and using the internet. We caught the bus back to the hotel in time for a quick game of ping pong, and headed for the ferry terminal. We loaded up with instant noodles (very traditional for locals i assure you) and got on the ferry. After being hassled into staying at the ***** part ... read more
