Hitchhiking is expensive in China. You will be expected to pay a lot if you are foreigners. And so a fast train whisks us south from Beijing. Our sleeper is the picture of lacy cleanliness and efficiency. Our companion is the gracious and courteous Mr. Lee, a businessman from Guangzhou. Guangzhou (pronounced gwong-jo), embraces us like a sweaty hug that doesn't stop. Tooling through the city toward Vitamin Creative Space we see the high-rises, through the smog, brimming green with rooftop gardens, and below busy tropical streets clouded by pockets of mushrooming construction. Spaghetti-like highway intersections tangle in 3D throughout a maze of residential block apartments. Bananas. Breadfruit. Buses. A little kid peeing on the street. What begs two twiggers' skills in a muggy high-rise city of 11 million? We immediately set about bringing two ... read more

Research tour in Guangzhou One of my courses organized a field trip visit to some start up companies and well established factories. For instance: the biggest Soya sauce/cooking sauce/spices manufacturer in China to study there production processes, fermentation tanks, etc. We visited yeast factories, pharmaceutical manufactures, bioremediation and phytoremediation companies. We were so well received (it was there that I finally learnt how to play majo). Indian Conference & Spice (pictures of India will be on my next, final, blog) India was just something else, I dont even know where to begin. I like India because you can easily search out for the real and untouristic parts... unlike other hot tourist spots like Thailand, you can still experience India in an authentic way. Things that marked me most were the heat!!!! the women and their bright ... read more

Well it's been a while since I wrote in my blog... Only because I felt they were no longer very interesting to read and not many people were reading them either... LOL That's ok, I don't mind and don't blame you. This'll most likely be a short one anyway. So, honestly not much has really changed here. But met a few people and have been keeping busy. Got a few job opportunities, but I really don' t want to take a job just because, especially in teaching. I did it for 2 years and I didn't come here for that, so... The weather was really good last week. Hardly any rain. Here I thought Taiwan was hot & humid... pfft! Think again. This place is MUCH worse. But it's all good. So as I had spent ... read more

I had the most bizarre experience going into mainland China. Last time we went to mainland, we went to see the sites, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, all the good stuff. This time, we were just taking a one-night trip to visit friends. So we take a short train ride across the border between Hong Kong and the mainland to Shenzhen. Shenzhen is actually pretty cool, lots of tall buildings. There's a hugeass mall Where the train station is. Rows and rows of stores, it would take more than a couple days to walk through. It was really annoying though because it was a touristy area and all of the shop-people kept coming up to us to tell us to come into their store or show us a catalog with their wares, etc. We didn't ... read more

Yup, you guessed it...MORE rain. And it ain't getting any better. Why didn't anyone tell me it was rainy season in China??? ;o) SO, as it has been raining uncontrolably here (wakes me up every morning..errr.. early afternoon...) :-O WHAT??! I have nothing else to do! LOL To continue what I was saying...I still haven't got to doing much. I sure have been keeping up to date on my e-mails and chatting that's for sure... well slowly have anyway. Most of the time I just watch a movie. There are tones of them on the cafe's intranet.. it's great. They even have Da Vinci Code... don' t forget I'm in China... lots of new releases to be watched.. if they're not dubbed in Chinese. My day's go somewhat like this: Wake up by either thunder and ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Dinghushan June 1st 2006

I wanted to go to Dinghushan to get away from people for a while. There are an awful lot of people in China. A mind boggling number of people in China. Even in the smaller cities the streets are gauntlets of people shaped obstacles getting in my way. There is more bustle in Chinese cities than if you put a giant t-bone steak smothered in honey on top of a nest of starving ants just before a rain storm. For a small town girl like me it is a bit daunting. I read that Dinghushan was a beautiful little village nestled among tranquil mountains, a veritable paradise for people wanting to escape the city. So I set off in search of paradise, hoping to spend a relaxing week or so strolling around picturesque mountains. Getting to ... read more

I finally got out of Zhuhai for 3 nights! It was great. I left with Charlene on Saturday afternoon to go meet up with Martin in his second home, GuangZhou. Of course it was raining, but the fact of being on a bus and heading somewhere new was oh so good! How quickly you forget that feeling when sitting around not doing much in a small town. Anyway, we then tried to find me a place to stay (hotel) in one of the downtown areas (this city is huge). Finally found something that was affordable in a great area (near Starbucks, pubs, restaurants and MALLS! LOL). As soon as I walked into the room I was sold. To most of you the standards of this room were ok, but for me it was like being in ... read more
