Hej! Hope you're all good and enjoying the last summer weeks! Thanks for e-mails, phonecalls, and comments - it's real good to hear from you! Here, the temperatures will be "summery" for another three, four months! We've heard a lot about the typhoons in neigbouring regions and other parts of China but have not been hit here in GuangZhou (knock on wood). It has been windy and rainy though, some days here and there. But mainly sunny, hot hot hot, and humid. Have now stayed in my very own flat for a week. Have made some attempts to decorate it but it's still quite plain and empty. Love just having my own place though! Will throw a house warming party this coming Sunday! Hopefully that will also be a kick in my but to get the ... read more

So, you would think that in most countries they have a system in place to move people from one side of the border to the other...like perhaps a customs officer comes onto our bus and processes each of us or you have enough officers to handle the volume of traffic they typically get.... Well, not in China! We were told that we would be driving to the border, changing buses and then getting a Hong Kong driver to take us to the hotel. When we got there, we had to take all of our stuff and WALK across the border to Hong Kong...with 8,000 (est) Chinese day visitors to Hong Kong!!!! It took us 4 hours to make it over and that is with cutting the line at some places (rude Americans). We took in total ... read more

We are in our last city, Shen Zhen, located across the water from Hong Kong. The biggest highlight here was going to Walmart. I know, sounds crazy, but it was really neat to see how different it is compared to the US. They get 180,000 customers a day at this location and many of them come 2-3 times per day to pick up fresh food for lunch and dinner. They have live fish that they kill for you and while we were there one jumped out of the tank and landed on the floor. We all bought stuff b.c. the prices were so cheap! We also went to the port, which is the 4th largest in the world (I think). Our hotel here is one of the nicest we've had--it had a bowling alley, a pool, ... read more

THE RISING TIDE A film by Robert Adanto China. The scene of the greatest economic, social, and political metamorphosis of our time. This hybrid-nation that blends Leninist authoritarianism with a market economy, struggles to secure resources and quell growing social unrest, despite averaging 9% growth over the last 20 years. However, for most Americans, China remains a mysterious land of ancient scholars with long beards practicing their calligraphy, of qi gong and flying monks from Shaolin. Despite its breakneck race towards modernization, this enigmatic land of contradictions completely escapes the notice of most Westerners. The transformation that China has undergone began in 1979 when Deng Xiaoping opened China up to the forces of the global market. Deng declared, “To be rich is glorious,” and his m... read more

After a three hour delay in the airport, we made it to GuangZhou, the weathiest city in China...this province is the leader in wealth (although it is still very low compared to US standards) because basically everything we wear is made here, including almost all of the world's sneaker production, so everyone has a job. We visited a Buick dealership (one of the top cars in China--odd, I know) and they were so happy to see us...check out the sign the put up. Apparently they don't see too many Westerners. We also went to a private congolmerate that makes everything from furniture to housing to mining. This is going to sound odd, and trust me it was, we went to a film producer's house for dinner, with leaders from the business community (think Chamber of Commerce) ... read more

Well actually that's not quite accurate. It's more a case of "Chinese people say no" China is an amazing place - a land of extreme contrast. Surrounding endless mammoth cities is lush empty countryside. The filthy rich mingle amongst the plain filthy. And for every one person who wants to befriend or help us there's hundreds who would rather walk away. Of course when people can't or won't help us it's generally because we can't communicate in the same language. However it can lead to some pretty frustrating situations. Today for example we wanted to book a train ticket from Zheng Zhou to Beijing. I went to two places that book train tickets. One said there's a train tomorrow night at 9pm, but you'll have to come back tomorrow to see if there's tickets. The other ... read more

Love all the comments, thanks!!! Makes me real happy, specially when missing home and you guys! The feared dog market turned into a day of manicure, sushi, massage, shopping, and Swedish dinner - such a girls’ day out! The massage was great, but aaooowwww it hurt! It lasted for about 2 ½ hours and they weren’t just using fingers and hands but some kind of tool aswell… and it wasn’t of the pleasant kind. The day after, when Veronica and I were at the Barbeque place just outside the apartment, the massage lady told us about our problems based on where it hurt after the massage. So we both now know what are problems are; both stomach problems, but in different parts of it... amazing huh?! hihi And naïve me thinking it hurt so much because ... read more

Neeha! Today's Thursday eve and it's almost 8 pm. I'm at work waiting to do some OPT's (Oral placement tests) for kids and adults that want to become students at EF, before heading home around 9. Exhausted after four days of teaching 10 to 12 -year olds. Especially the first day was real tough, with four of the boys in the class beeing very difficult. But then it has improved, day by day. Am proud of myself, and a quite chocked too, that I haven't lost my temper yet. Have never thought of myself as a teacher but am actually liking it a lot! It's defenitely a challange though, to deal with kids this age; come up with games to keep them motivated, stop them from not freaking out, and teach them a little too.. :) ... read more

Here I am, back in Shenzhen. I've been gone for a month, but I was surprised to find that I forgot how China smells. When I stepped out of the cab in Shenzhen, I took a deep breath and though, "Oh, yes. That's right. China smells." I don't want to say it smells bad, it's just much different from the US. Living here for so long, I had gotten use to it and didn't even notice it, but now I'm reminded of my first time coming to China 8 years ago. The smells keep sending me on trips down memory lane. I also forgot that China has 1.2 billion people (although Sen tells me it's now 1.5 billion). I was walking down the street and there were people everywhere. I was only gone one month, but ... read more

Hey! It's now almost twelve at night and I'm at an internet cafe close to Veronica's place. It's so freakin hot and terribly humid, prob bout 35 degrees c. Even now, at this time it's sweatin hot. But it's quite lovely too though!!! This past week has been busy but real cool and I'm really enjoying it here! Cajsa arrived with Gotheborg last Tuesday and we met up with her and the ship at a harbour a bit outside Guangzhou. There was a whole big event for relatives and the Swedish community here in Guangzhou, with a bus leaving in the morning coming back in the afternoon. After the ship had arrived we finally got some time to spend together, all the tree of us =) The whole event regarding the arrival of the ship has ... read more
