Guangzhou is to the west of America as Dalian is to the east. People in Guangzhou are relaxed and take time in their lives to truly spend freely. People in Dalian are busy - never have time to do anything but study and work. Guangzhou is full of greenery and has water running through it. Dalian has no greenery and has water running on two sides of it. These are some of the observances I've made today as I have traveled around Guandong a little bit - to parts of Guangzhou, Foshan and Daliang. This morning after getting ready for the day I walked around and found the metro to Yuexiu Park where I walked around for quite some time. There were people relaxing in all different parts of the park. Sitting reading books, dancing with ... read more

Your attention please. Passengers for the flight CZ6321 to Guangzhou. This flight has been delayed due to the accuedrop. The new departure time will be announced later. Your attention please. Passengers for the flight CZ6543 to Shanghai. This flight has been delayed due to the accuedrop. The new departure time will be announced later. Over and over, each flight is announced until the people around me begin to recite the phrase and laugh at each others rote memorization of the passage. Two hours ago I came for my flight. At the time it was delayed due to fog. "When will it depart?" I asked an airport attendant standing next to a white blackboard with a message scribbled in undiscernable Chinese and my flight number beneath. "I don't know. Whenever the fog clears." I sat and waited. ... read more

It has been almost three weeks since I have last been able to put together an entry. The activity level has increased, we have each made some out of town trips, and we have had some more visitors to help us out in our efforts. This past weekend I went to Hong Kong for some professional visits. One of our students was presenting the outline of her research at a conference for Hong Kong and Mainland students. She worked with Ellen on the project (a small bit with me as well) and won the award in her category. She was very pleased, as were we. I also paid a visit to the research center on suicide attached to Hong Kong University and met with some of their staff. They have researched suicide in HK and offered ... read more

If there is one single observation about China we all agree on, it is that there is not enough time in the day. Wake up at 8am, forage for breakfast, meet up with Peter, stagger around 170,000 square metres of floor space, forage for lunch, return to hotel, massage, try to survive dinner, go out and return to hotel at 3am, wake up at 9am, and so it goes on....after three consecutive days of this routine, even Crocodile began to crack. We awoke our first morning in Guangzhou after a rather late evening and immediately planned our breakfast attack. This is a particularly challenging affair in Guangzhou if you enjoy anything that is not considered a pet. We opted for a taxi to a Pizza Hut, or Pissa-Haa in local dialect. The taxi driver nodded and ... read more

Team extraction complete, the elite members of the Beertjie Brigade, Beertjie (Andy), Chewy (Wayne), Nicns (Nic) and operations specialist Crocodile George arrived in Hong Kong to little fanfare. The beginning of this mission however has not been straightfoward stealth tactics. In the first 24 hours the team almost lost Crocodile to a brief encounter with the Third Kind.....but that's another story. Awaiting Nicns arrival at 3:30pm, Beertjie, Chewy and Crocodile landed in Hong Kong at 8am and decided to hit the town, or the island in this case. Jet-lagged from 6 crappy 4x6cm movies, off-the-shelf DIY sleeping pills, and that smell that is so quintessential Asian, we headed straight for the oldest British pub in Hong Kong, The Old China Hand in Wan Chai district - we figured we could grab a bite and even catch ... read more

‘We have now completed our 7th week here, more than a third of the way through our term. The activity level has only increased, as we witness and participate in new areas of interest. For example, I have previously written about the 4 suicides that occurred on a neighboring campus in February and the proposal that we drafted for the Social Work Department to develop a suicide prevention program. This proposal has not been acted upon although it was well received in an initial meeting between our department chair and one of the VPs of the university. Nothing like this happens quickly and we expect this effort is no exception. Nonetheless, Ellen’s undergraduate students, who are located on a ten-college campus along with the school that experienced the suicides, are eager to get going on some ... read more

I am now in Hong Kong after a tough week and a half or so after leaving Xian. I don’t know if I’ve been having bad luck or just what it is, but I can’t say that I’m having a whole lot of fun right now. Mainly trying not to get cheated everywhere I go. And I’m not being too successful at that right now either. I should start out in Xian, where I last left the blog. I spent 4 or 5 days there, the second time I’ve been to Xian. I was mainly there to relax and set up my trip down the Yangtze, but also to see a friend I’d met at the hostel I stayed at last time. That may be where my bad run started, because I was never able to ... read more

Week five has rolled around and we continue to find ourselves amazed, bewildered, and captivated by our experiences. Our students are energetic and engaged, working hard to make themselves understood in English, a language that he been mostly textbooks and language tapes for them until now. They are seriously motivated to gain greater mastery of English, as they see it an important key to the future. Some number of them will end up in jobs having nothing to do with social work; they are in the department because they were offered an opportunity. The decision about what students go to what schools is guided by the winner take all exam held each July. We have already heard of several undergraduate students who have been offered positions in sales once they graduate this summer. Eli joined us ... read more
