I had the most bizarre experience going into mainland China. Last time we went to mainland, we went to see the sites, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, all the good stuff. This time, we were just taking a one-night trip to visit friends. So we take a short train ride across the border between Hong Kong and the mainland to Shenzhen. Shenzhen is actually pretty cool, lots of tall buildings. There's a hugeass mall Where the train station is. Rows and rows of stores, it would take more than a couple days to walk through. It was really annoying though because it was a touristy area and all of the shop-people kept coming up to us to tell us to come into their store or show us a catalog with their wares, etc. We didn't ... read more

I wish I could frame you and this feeling on the wall To stare at ’till there is no time... Hanson I just got back from China. What an adventure. My friend Kayte and I spent 2 days there visiting Marty, a family friend from home. He took care of us, good care of us, while we were there! It’s so crazy that I hung out with Marty in China. WOW! … I'm sorry it just boggles my mind. China is a whole different ball game than Hong Kong. The 2 days that we were in China (Shenzhen) we only saw one other “white” person, besides the 3 of us. It was an awesome experience! Some people speak English, most did not. (Not that I expect them to, it was just very hard to communicate) ... read more

Shenzhen is the place to bargain. It's only across the border from home so its easy to get to. But beware the stench of the river when you cross the border. And watch your pockets. Cheap cheap manicures, pedicures and massages. Yum. Oh and good chinese food.... read more

My last day in Shenzhen was spent lychee picking and lychee peeling and lychee eating ! Look at all the lychees! Lychees! Lychees Everywhere! Me = in tree, = munching lychees! Beats watermelon picking, that's for sure. The pictures of this joyful moment were captured on a friend's camera, and the pictures will go up when he sends them to me. (Me, to stop munching merely to take a picture? heh!) I'm off to Xiangtan! **edit** The pictures have arrived, courtesy of Cheng Pei and his dad! Thanks!!! *******... read more

Profound thought acquired: I think that If one remains in a fixed location for a long time, one runs the risk of finding anything and everything different from one's immediate surroundings SURREAL For example, watching people ice-skate on an olympic sized rink on the fourth storey of a shopping mall? Or doing this while enjoying an excellent meal from a restaurant that doesn't take cash? All for the equivalent of a pound? I felt quite liberated to be contemplating how, just as the mind loses strength if not exercised, it also loses flexibility if not 'stretched'. Confucious said that Study without Contemplation leads to confusion, and Contemplation without Study is dangerous. * I say that the mind is a muscle. hmm, more Contemplation needed, perhaps? Meanwhile, enjoy s... read more

Well, Here I am in Shenzhen, after a beautiful flight across Russia (yay JON!) I love how the clouds look from above, it's so pure and full of promise. Shenzhen is a huge metropolis, littered with futuristic skyscrapers -watching all that japanese anime, I sometimes forget that there are cities such as Shenzhen which are actually pretty close to what's depicted on screen. And the lychees here are the size of golf balls! First mountain: Lian Hua Shan Not much of a peak, hence a perfect warm-up. It's right in the centre of the city, how come the UK doesn't get any mountains as city parks?! Beautiful, just what i've been dreaming of, steps cut out of rock, and and lush foliage everywhere. The view was an incredible cityscape, therefore a different kind of inspiring. Check ... read more

We took a 1 hr car ride from HK to Shenzhen and stayed in TLC hostel’s clubhouse! It’s luxurious, just like a suite! We spent the first evening dining with Hui’s family at 大三元 and had an early night. The next was spent sweltering hot at Window to the World and Chinese Cultural Village, in which we watched (in my opinion) a very cruel Mongolian show involving horses. I felt particularly sorry looking at some thin old horses being forced to run faster and faster by the rider; I think I shouldn’t go to animal circuses. And finally we had a fruitful and cooling shopping spree at Lady’s World, where we managed to buy more than we could carry in a matter of two hours. Dinner was takeaway 酸辣粉, and delicious Octopus and Mutton skewers we ... read more
