Like many cultural resources in Guangzhou, the Uprising Memorial Museum is often hidden by stampedes of weekend shoppers. With retail tourism outweighing cultural tourism the Cultural Department is making new efforts to promote museums and other resources. This time the Uprising Memorial Museum is showcasing a new exhibit detailing the history of the Haizhu Bridge. The exhibit's name is Bridge City. To visit just take the 1 Metro to Gongyuanqian and walk out of Exit J.The exhibit shows the 80 year history of the first bridge to span China's Pearl River in 1933. At the time this was an impressive conquest, while today over a dozen bridges span the same river. If we look at this as a step in modern Chinese engineering, today China holds the three longest bridges in the world: The Qingdao Haiwan ... read more

So the day of reckoning finally came and we were pretty much flung in at the teaching deep end by having to take a one and a half hour class of twenty one boisterous 5 – 7 year olds and their parents! To say we were nervous is an understatement, especially when we couldn’t even have a conversation with them to build up a bit of a rapport. Sign language only goes so far, and some of them were so nervous a little reassuring pep talk would have helped, but never mind. As it turns out, the kids responded really well to us and the language barrier wasn’t as big an issue as we both thought it would be. We both have a Chinese teaching assistant in the class with us, so that makes it a ... read more

So today I travelled from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. The train journey was nice, and quite scenic, getting to the train station was almost more stressful than when Tom and I did it in Thailand. But at least in Thailand I had someone else with me! The morning started well. I got off to an early start (well early for me) with the intention of being at the train station at around 11-11:30 for my 1:11 train. With my bags packed neatly I set out for the Sheung Wan MTR station... in the wrong direction. Walked for 20 minutes the wrong way before I realised and turned around. That would be a 40 minute detour, in the heat, carrying two suitcases with a total of more than 30kg between them. Once I got back to the ... read more

It never felt real to me before I set off. The enormity of what I was about to undertake didn’t fully hit me, I still don’t think it has, and even as I got into the car it just felt like I was going on holiday, or back to university (which I was in a way). Yet 15000km, 25 hours, 2 flights and one £8 pint later there I was at the immigration desk in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, hoping that I hadn’t gone wrong on my visa form, that all the numbers matched, that I’d done everything I had to do. I had the same feeling that had hounded me at every step along the way, the feeling that I had done something wrong, I wasn’t supposed to be there, it had all just been ... read more

Seeing as we only have another 3 days before our first ever English class (seriously we must be insane), we decide we should have a look at what we’re actually going to be teaching. It’s a nerve wracking prospect, especially when they have none or very little english. Building a rapport with young people is hard enough without the added pressure of trying to communicate in sign language and hand gestures. We head down to koala school to take a look at the teaching text books and are slightly disheartened when the teachers instructions pack is all in chinese language! There’s no English version to follow, so it looks like we’ll be winging it by trying to decipher the topics based on the pictures and words in the kids’ exercise books. Now we’re even more worried! ... read more

We wake up at 6am to rapid lightning- at first I think I’m dreaming as all we can see is these little flashes of light every few seconds coming from behind the curtains. When we look outside it’s like a magical light show as several forks of lightning illuminate the clouds every few seconds making them seem translucent. The rain is like nothing we’ve ever seen before, it’s so loud and the droplets are huge! We eventually manage to get back to sleep and then wake up at 12 before snoozing until 2pm. I think we needed the extra few hours seeing as we hadn’t slept for the last few days. I don’t feel jetlagged as such, but have a bit of a fuzzy head and not feeling the sharpest. Hopefully once we’ve had something to ... read more

Guangzhou airport in Guangdong Province in China, July 12, 2013. Waiting for my flight to Guiyang -- a 7-hour wait -- leaving tonight at 7:30 and arriving at about 9:30. I hope that Diane and Simon will be there to meet me. If not, then I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I decided to check 1 bag because the 2nd was going to cost about 200 RMB but when I went through security, I had a couple of aerosol cans of sunscreen and they wouldn't let me through -- I had to dump the sunscreen or go back and check the second bag. I decided to go back. It was relatively painless and I managed to get back to the front of the line at security -- it was worth the wait, I ... read more

And here it is, my final China blog entry. I thought it would be most fitting for it to be the final China edition of "It's the Little Things that Make Me Smile." I initially started this series as a way to share cute little stories that were too short to warrant their own, full entries. Over the past five years, though, it's become a favorite to write and compile. Everyday, people do sweet little things for us that are often overlooked or quickly forgotten. Writing this has allowed me to take time and smell the roses, shall we say, of my day to day experiences. And writing them down means I won't soon forget them or the kindness of the people or the joy they brought into my life. Here it is, the final smiles ... read more

Sorrio, pois algo familiar me conforta.
