I arrived in Beijing 1 hour before scheduled...I guess the pilot was speeding or something!!! After we landed I went through customs and got my baggage and headed of to my meeting spot with Brian. No Brian. Where was he? My cell phone said I just missed a call from him, so he must be around here somewhere! I try pushing the speed dial on my cell phone and get some Chinese woman saying the number doesn't exist! What?!?! I try again...same thing. And again...same thing. OHMYIGOSH that just cost me $4.50 to call Brian!!! (The Intl. calls cost $1.50/min. with Sprint...not that bad considering Cingular is $2.50/min.) So I try to call my voice mail. Chinese lady again. Cha ching $6.00. Panic and frustration are setting in. OK…so I figure out how to call my ... read more

I was walking to the post office today in order to send one last postcard. It was about 11 o'clock on a Friday morning, so there were not a lot of people on the sidewalk. I had walked across a pedestrian overpass and was walking down the steps when I noticed someone rather close behind me, so I kind of got over to the side of the steps so he/she could pass me. However the person didn't pass me and so I continued walking, but once at the bottom of the steps I felt someone touching my little backpack purse. My immediate instinct was to turn around, say "Hey!", and push the person, all in one movement. Once I realized what was going on, I kind of regretted my pushing reaction. However, once I had turned ... read more

OK I made it to Beijing. I can't upload photos yet so you'll just have to imagine what it looks like. Only been here two days so not a great deal to write. The first day was kind of written off to jet lag, I couldn't sleep at all on the plane so getting in at 6am without any sleep isn't a good idea... maybe I shouldn't have had all those complimentary beverages! Met a nice chap in the seat next to me who happened to have studied the same course at the same university as me. Second day was a bit more interesting, got up early-ish to head out to Tiannenmen Square which is famous for being the biggest public square in the world and nothing else (or so they would have you believe). It ... read more

I don't think tomatoes and sauerkraut (or as they call it, sour vegetable) have ever tasted so good! Everyday that I go into work, I go to lunch in the cafeteria. They generally have three meat dishes of which you can choose just one. Then they have two vegetable dishes, rolls, soup, noodles, and fresh fruit. At first I enjoyed trying the different vegetables, but they are just so different. Today, though, they had stewed tomatoes with scrambled eggs mixed in, sauerkraut with some sort of noodle, and some fried potatoes. I must have been scarfing it down because my supervisor told me that I could get seconds. I think they were glad to see me eat though, because they always feel I never eat enough. The problem is that they eat everything that is offered, ... read more

As I think I may have mentioned before, my internship is with a law firm and entails me doing their marketing. Now in case you do not know, I majored in finance which means I only took one marketing class my entire college career. On my first day the boss and supervisor told me that I was to do the marketing and how I should go about it. The method they gave me for marketing, was to come up with a marketing letter and send it out to all the foreign law firms and commerce organizations in China. The firm I work for specializes in company formations, in other words they do all the legal paperwork to get a company incorporated in China or offshore. So the thought from my superiors was to try to get ... read more

I found a bus that goes somewhat between the subway station and my dorm! Now I don't have to pay like $3.75 round trip for a taxi! If I take the bus, it only costs around $0.25 round trip. The difficulty in finding a bus that gets you between your starting point and your destination is that according to the Chinese the only way to know which bus to get on is to ask a friend or look online. The problem is that I didn't know of anyone that had made the trek before and would thus know which bus number to take, plus the map online is all in Chinese. So basically I was subjected to paying for the taxi, not that it is that much in US dollars, but in Chinese RMB you could ... read more

So here we are, still in Beijing and still having a good time. We have been out to find the world famous Li Qun roast duck restaurant for some of the local dish of Peking (Beijing) Duck. We hired a cycle rickshaw to take us there, he went down some narrow and seemingly dessolate streets. Then, there it was, a little door with a lot of rickshaws parked outside. We went through the door and nearly fell into the kitchen, whilst waiting for our table, a couple of American guys turned up they said that they had pre-booked their table and duck. (as it could take upto 1 hour for the duck to cook). The waitress offered us a large table, if we shared with the guys. So we were led to a luxury side room ... read more
