The deprived little Korean children are only given ONE meager week of summer vacation, which means myself, a teacher, only gets one week as well. When trying to decide where to spend our precious week, the choices were narrowed down to Japan, Thailand and China due to proximity. In the end, the choice was obvious: Beijing, China! It was half the price for a flight, only one hour away from Seoul, and once there, room and board were ridiculously inexpensive as well. We knew it was going to be a good trip when we boarded the plane and realized they had bumped us up to first class! We were treated like royalty the entire time: extra drinks, slippers, blankets, pillows, and more leg room than necessary. I almost wished the flight was longer! Once we arrived, ... read more

CHINA...Scams, Scams & more Scams...the Unsuspecting Tourist. When I go to China...I take my wits with me...or so I think...but as I believe friendliness opens doors...I can be an unsuspecting tourist...a target for scammers...or so they think! Brushes with the Tea Scam, Art Scam, Rolex Scam, Restaurant Scam, Taxi Scam, DVD Scam, Fossil Scam...come to mind. The Fossil Scam: I am in the Stone Forest at Shilin...about 200 kms from Kunming in Yunnan Provence...walking among the rocks. Suddenly a man in dirty clothes and unruly hair...smiles...indicating I should look at a treasure wrapped in cloth. My jaw dropped in wonder...disbelief...a fossil on a layer of slate...two miniature dinosaur lizards intertwined...never seen anything like it...he's offerring it to me...better be quick before someone else comes along and beats me to it! ... read more

On Donghua Men Daije as you walk towards the Forbidden City you will see a long row of vendors dressed in white selling a variety of food in their shiny red carts. This is the Night Market. Unlike other night markets in Asia, this one only sells food. Winter fare would be much different from summer fare. On our first night there we decided to brave the cold and check it out. We headed out around 7ish and found the vendors were starting to pack up. The night was bitterly cold so there weren’t many people around the stalls. Unlike Hong Kong, the snacks consisted of a lot of insects and bugs, it was interesting to see. The other interesting food was a sort of mini candy apples piled together with some sweet sticky coating. If ... read more

One of the main shopping areas in Beijing is Wangfujing Street. This street is a pedestrian walkway with a series of shops and shopping malls on both sides of the street. A must visit is the Oriental Plaza, one of largest shopping malls in Beijing. The plaza is three stories and goes from Wangfujing Street to Dongei Dajie. The bottom of the plaza the whole floor is dedicated to restaurants and a few food halls. Any type of food you want to eat, as well as a massive food hall which prepares a variety of fresh food. The only draw back is nothing here is in English so if you are game, you have to just point and order. The bottom of Wangfujing Street takes you to Dongchang’an Jie. If you take a left at the ... read more

Istället dricker vi upp vårt kaffe och vandrar längs The Strand ... read more

Once upon a time, in a land far far away called China, two western travelers rose from their slumber, when the clock struck 6.30. The ever exhausted travelers were pleased to find that this day he clock had struck at the right time, as twas but a day earlier they did but rise an hour premature. The fixed their attire, applied the appropriate spf protection and feasted upon the breakfast provided for them. The guide Selena crossed paths with them, and they boarded the beast which would courteously transport them for the following day of travels. The beast visited many tribes to gather the remaining mystical beings who would be joining today (once again non other venturing from the land of England). As much as id like to carry on in this way, its taking far ... read more

Découverte de Wangfujing street (Champs E... read more

Today was a leisurely one for us here in Beijing! After the crazy touristness of the past few days, we decided a rest day was in order. We all had a lie in and sat around in our PJs...even when housekeeping came to clean the room! I then popped off to the gym to try and stretch out my poor leg muscles. I have been struggling since the Great Wall and I am not really sure it worked, but it was worth a try! Mum then brought the kids to meet me and we all had a some fun in the swimming pool, before a light lunch back in the room. We didn't emerge from the hotel until about 1.30pm when we ventured around the block to see what was nearby. Rather frustratingly, we found a ... read more

Today is the flight to Beijing, China and I couldn’t be more excited. I will skip the nitty gritty and flash forward to the events. Kaori and I met an amazing couple at the Osaka Airport. Tohru and Atsuko Ozaki were born and raised in Japan but are now living in China. We got to talking and found out some very good tips from their personal experience. First off, they mention that if you are offered a price on any item in the streets or at store, divide it by ten to get the local price of item. Tohru mentioned that while shopping in China she paid 80 Yuan, about $12, for an item at one play then later in she found the exact same item for 20 Yuan. So if you are shopping around, don’t ... read more

We had to wake up early in order to catch our flight to Beijing. It was said to leave Nanjing because by then we knew our trip was coming to an end. Our flight left Nanjing at 9 am and we flew China Eastern Airlines. I sat near the back of the plane with Camille and a local Chinese girl named Kate who was going to Beijing for business. I worked on my blog for a little bit during the flight. When we arrived at Beijing, Kate and I started to talk. I was able to practice my Chinese with her which was great. I was able to hold a conversation from the jetway to the baggage claim, which was self-satisfying. We exchanged QQ numbers afterwards and I keep in touch with her to this day. ... read more
