Although we complained about the organisational skills here in Cambodia, especially in getting the boat from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, we must point out that in general all bus trips somehow manage to work perfectly and no better example than the bus to Kep, a little laid back seaside village. We had used a small travel agent in Phnom Penh for our trip to Siem Reap so we went in search of her again for our bus ticket to Kep. She was not there but, accommodating as the Cambodians are, the man from the next shop telephoned her for us and 20 minutes later she arrived hurriedly on the back of a motorbike. Two tickets to Kep cost a total of US$9 and her commission comes out of that. Next day, exactly on time at ... read more

Four hours after leaving Phnom Penh we arrived in the tiny seaside town of Kep. The drive had been very pretty - many postcard scenes of rice paddies, palm leave houses, bullock carts and limestone hills. We (Ruth from NZ) had prebooked accommodation at a guest house with a swimming pool - the owner met us and took us back to our home for the next few days. The guest house (Malibu) was set off the main road at the base of a small hill - very pretty and the swimming pool was gorgeous! The owners (French) were really casual and we didn't even have to sign a register or give our details - the first time in the whole trip we haven't had to show our passports when we checked into a room. We ... read more

So, we have found paradise, (again? I hear you say) and are in Kep on the south Coast of Cambodia. We had a great time in Siem Reap and would love to go back again in the future, our heartstrings have definitely been pulled by our visit to the kids at the Childrens Light Foundation and by Siem Reap in general. There is definitely a touristy feel to the town but in general it is tasteful and the local people remain friendly, fun and hospitable. Unfortunately we left Siem Reap with our second muffler trip burn of our Asian adventures, Finn was a little luckier than Olivia though and his has healed quickly (and quietly!). Our friend Seng arranged a van from Siem Reap to Battembang and what a different trip this was from March, ... read more

Going into the jungle with a George W. Bush hippie-clone, avoiding getting killed by a murder- coconut on a Robinson Crusoe kind of island, and drinking beer in a David Lynchish kind of karaoke-bar full of “sad young men”, are some of the experiences I had in south-Cambodia, but also here old ghosts from the Khmer Rouge, ruins of burned down villas, standing up like skeletons in the landscape. I just spend a few days here, but the impression of all the good people I met along the way, are everlasting ones. Driving out of Phnom Pehn felt like a relief. Next to me sat a young man. - Do you speak English? I asked. - Just a little. The usual Asian modesty, I’d say. Later on it turned out his English was probably much ... read more

After checking out sihanoukville,we decided to check out Kep down the coast, almost to the vietnam border, before heading inland away from the beach (for the first time on this trip!). Kep is a nice town, less touristy. Historically where the French used to come for vacations in the 1920's, when they had influence in Cambodia. There are lots of old abandoned french buildings which have been abandoned scattered about the town here and they are pretty creepy! The guesthouse we stayed at, Kep Lodge, was very nice. The view reminded me of the view from kona, HI. A little off the shoreline, but overlooking lots of beautiful palm trees. There really were no beaches in Kep, so we decided once again to rent a motorbike and check out the town! Kep is famous for its ... read more

About three weeks ago I'd read someone else's travel blog on Kep who'd said that the Vanna Bungalows were nice so we went there first from the bus and yes they did turn out to be nice. Built half way up a forested hill with great views at sunset over the ocean. Straight away I noticed the tweets and twitterings of birdsong from the surrounding hillside and I realized its a sound we've not heard in a while. Borneo was not bereft of bird life but I had expected more. I don't think birds can nest in palm oil trees like they would do in natural forests. What we saw of peninsular Malaysia was just as bad maybe worse than Borneo for palm oil plantations. The first thing you see on leaving Kuala Lumpur airport are ... read more

We originally planned to fly back to mainland Vietnam from Phu Quoc but all the flights were full. Lee is rubbish on boats so we wanted to avoid the sea but we had no other option. Our only way was a 2 hour ferry from the port to Rach Gia (south) or Ha Tien (more towards the Cambodia border), so we booked a ticket and headed to the port. When our minibus dropped us off outside a huge, hi tech speedboat, which looked super steady on the water Lee gave a huge sigh of relief, only to be told that wasn't our boat, ours was the little wave grabber one behind. To be fair it was a good trip. It took just over an hour and with air conditioning, hip moving local music and a friendly ... read more

A four hour bus ride from Phnom Penh we arrived in Kep. From the early 1900's until the 1960's, Kep was a thriving resort town for the French and Cambodian elite. During the Khmer Rouge years, much of Kep's French colonial era mansions and villas were destroyed. Many of Kep's villas are abandoned, but some of the town's former splendour is still apparent. King Sihanouk built a home here overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, but it was never occupied and now sits empty. When we arrived we were greeted by a group of tuk tuk drivers all offering to take us to any guesthouse we wanted for a dollar. Not having anywhere in mind we went with the driver who looked the friendliest and he drove us around until we found a place to stay for ... read more
