David here... We arrived back in Phnom Penh with 2 goals that day; to book all our onward travel up to Vietnam and to get to the National Museum. We made our way back to the Indochine hotel which we had pre-booked during our last stay and from there booked onward travel to Kep for the next day and then the trip to Chau Doc in Vietnam on the 21st when our visas become valid. All of this was done for us quickly and easily which meant we had plenty of time to make it to the museum. It has to be said, booking travel all over South East Asia has been a doddle and we are yet to be let down by anyone. The museum itself is a very grand building, in the style of ... read more

Kirsten’s Birthday and a weekend on Rabbit Island ... In the midst of another busy week, working with drillers under the hot sun and chasing around to find local labs that have half way decent analytical methodology, Kirsten’s Birthday rolled around on Thursday (26th). On our way to dinner at Friends (a lovely little restaurant set up to train Phnom Penh street kids in hospitality), K somewhat perturbed by having to wear clothes have become increasingly yellow (village laundry), stumbled across a brilliant and funky clothes shop, Spicy Green Mango, which has some classy kit that would not be out of place in a Newtown boutique. Sporting a classy new dress we had a lovely Birthday celebration, ordered almost exclusively in Khmer. There’s nothing like ordering meals and shopping top improve the language skills. Whilst we ... read more

I took a bus to Kep and stayed the night, before heading to the island. Kep is a bizarre place. It used to be a South Beach of Cambodia, where the rich and famous had grand villas by the sea. Then during Khmer Rouge, the city was vacated, like most of Cambodia's city and it never came back. Today, the town is full of ruined blackened remains of once grand palaces. Yet, they all have brand new walls around it. It has something to do with Cambodian property laws - I guess you need fences around to maintain ownership. So the whole town is largely plots of either empty land or ruins of grand villas with new or newish stone walls around. It has a very spooky feeling to it. The beach near the town is ... read more

Well another month has passed, and we now find ourselves in Cambodia. We had originally thought that we would stay another three months Teaching in Vietnam but the old itchy feet were taking hold again, so we decided to hit the road. We really did enjoy our time in Nha Trang, the Teaching was a challenge at times, but also very rewarding. Towards the end I started teaching children 4-12 years old and it was good fun but took lots of energy. We really tried to get involved with the local kids whilst there and had several outings with them. One Sunday we spent the afternoon with a lot of Environmental students cleaning up a local beach, which earned us some very strange looks from the locals, between us we managed to fill about 3 dozen ... read more

After breakfast we rent the bike again. This time we are off in search of some caves. These are pretty far out and again we are driving past lots of fields. The kids are so friendly and we don’t pass a single one who doesn’t wave and shout ‘hello!’ to us. Eventually we have to turn off the main road and end up on a dirt track which is an experience. We bump along through little villages and have crowds of kids waving at us as we pass by. Hardly anyone speaks English here so it is impossible to get directions to the caves. A boy on a bicycle passes and indicates that we should follow him. He takes us to the temple and we try to explain that that’s not where we are going. We ... read more

We want to explore the local area so rent a bike which is a semi-automatic. Rik has only ridden an automatic so after he is given a quick lesson on how to use it, we are ready to go. We drive around for ages, looking for a temple we don’t find. The ride is great, however. We ride along the coast and eventually we’re going past fields and dodging cows intent on crossing the road. It’s safe driving a bike around here as despite it being the main road, vehicles only pass now and then. In fact, there is not much in Kep - it is refreshingly unspoilt and undeveloped. All you get in the way of shops are a few huts scattered here and there. It is a totally different world … On our way ... read more

Rabbit Island is a 20 minutes dingy ride from Kep in Cambodia's south. After spending Friday night at Vanna Bungalows ( I cherished the peace and quiet and a double bed all to myself) I woke early on Saturday morning planning to head to Rabbit Island. At breakfast i worked up enough courage to ask some strangers who were also talking anout Rabbit Island if I could tag along with them. They agreed and so we set off. The next 2.5 days were spent in complete relaxation mode. There are no toilets or showers so I was a complete ferral and so salt encrusted I cracked with every movement by the end of my time there. I loved it though and even enjoyed my mattress on the floor of my bamboo hut. Electricity was run by ... read more

We had heard and read good things about the island Kho Tonsay (Rabbit Island) which is on the south coast of Cambodia and so with the lure of sitting on a beach for a few days we set off. In an effort to save money we opted for the night bus to save a nights accommodation. The downside was that the night bus did not leave till 8pm and our hotel kicked out at 12 so we had 8 hours of wondering around not doing much (we ended up taking advantage of the $0.50 beer...the theory was it would help us sleep...it didn't it just made me wee a lot). So eventually we got on the bus and while I'm getting better at sleeping on things its still going to be difficult for anyone to ... read more
