Our next stop was Kep, which is a bizar place that doesn't really has a center and is a long city along the coast with many hotels and guesthouses. The city is famous for its delicious crab, therefore we took the occasion to try a crab in a kampot pepper sauce in one of the many restaurants along the coast. The next evening, we relished a cocktail at the sailing club with one of the most spectacular sunsets we have seen till now.... read more

Hello People, It was between hiring a moped to explore Kampot and Kep or to book a tour, as the roads are mainly dirt tracks we decided to pay for a tour through our hostel. It was $15.5 for a day trip via tuk tuk, who we also shared with two Swiss guys who had booked on to the tour. We woke up early to have breakfast before hand, and where we had also arranged to meet Martina (from the Trans Mongolian trip), who was passing through Kampot. It was a flying catch up unfortunately that only lasted 30 minutes because our tour started at 8.30am. Martina had been to Vietnam once leaving Beijing, so we picked her brain’s, she was flying to Australia in the afternoon for NY in Sydney. It was great catching up! ... read more

Well readers it's been a while since my last blog. Basically because I wasn't up to much just sunbathing on a tropical island - it's a dirty job but someone has to do it. :-) I shared a room with Amy ( the girl I met on the bus/ boat going over to Koh Rong) for a couple of days at the sea view guest house and then she she headed back to the mainland, so I moved to the island villas which wasn't such a nice place but did have a bathroom in the room rather than a shared one round the corner lol. I amused myself by sun bathing and eating out had having a few drinks and an early night. I decided to leave the island on the Saturday and head back to ... read more

Accommodation - Veranda Natural Resort - Kep Accommodation - 4 Rivers Floating Lodge - Koh Kong Weather - Hot & sunny with blue skies and occasional clouds 32c On our transfer from the Cambodian border to Kep we stopped at an interesting cave temple of Wat Kirisan built into the base of a small mountain. Walking through the caves revealed steep limestone cliffs covered with foliage and occasional hidden shrines with gold and silver buddhas. Kep is a somewhat sleepy seaside town, on the Gulf of Thailand, famous for its regional green fresh peppercorns, blue crabs, prawns and other seafood. Kep was Cambodia's first seaside resort, founded by the French in 1908. Fine french-style mansions now lay deserted, burnt out and abandoned following Khmer Rouge invasions during the civil war. We were staying at the Veranda ... read more

Got to Phnom Penh on Saturday late night and grabbed a tuk tuk into the city through the deserted suburbs and arrived at Longlin guesthouse to be greeted by Sokly. Sokly is one of the kids from the orphanage who I knew from before but is now living in the city, going to University, studying hotel management and tourism and working part time at the guesthouse. The room was pretty good despite it lacking a window and had one too many cockroaches that anyone wants... Next morning we rose pretty early to take in the city. We had a leisurely stroll along the river front and had a spot of breakfast at Bojangles (an old favourite!) before heading to the central market to buy some supplies. Heading back to the hotel Kat decided she was going ... read more

It took us just over 4 hours to get from Phnom Penh to Kep, which is exactly what we were told. Once out of the city the road was good for a while before we turned onto a sandy unmade track which took up the rest of the journey. It was slow and dusty but we got to see some incredible countryside. On arrival in Kep we took our bags out of the hold and they were covered in red dust. It's a good job we remembered to put our covers on our rucksacks! A tuk tuk driver offered to take us to our hotel for the princely sum of $2, but we didn't realise just how close it was. $1 would have been too much. We didn't have the right change anyway and he ended ... read more

Booked by our guesthouse, was a day trip to Kep. We visited the salt fields, the pepper plants, some caves with temples and had a great restaurant lunch on the beach. We had fresh squid, in which Hannah had never tried before. The tour was good because there was only 4 of us - an Aussie mother and daughter. The evening was pretty fun, a drunken night with the dudes from East Sussex. They drove us into the town on their motorbikes. Hannah was advised that the Rusty Keyhole was known for the best ribs. However, to our disappointment, they had none left and it wasn't even that late. So instead the beer (for me) and the cocktails (for Hannah) happened. The boys drove us back to the guesthouse and we stayed up late in the ... read more

Thank you to everybody for all your support and comments about Ikelos. It reminds me how many people's lives he touched. I really appreciate them. So I am on the move again. I am just trying to get out of my house and find a little peace. It is rough being in my house all alone. I keep expecting to open a door and Ikelos and see Ikelos laying down in a room or on the sofa or something. I knew that I had to get out of there. So I am wandering again. For me wandering is good for the soul. It always makes me feel better. I guess maybe I like to run from problems or something. I just know that wandering allows me to process the fact the he is gone slowly. I ... read more

Leaving our hotel we went to the local market where you can buy anything but I am not sure I would have wanted to. Steve bought some bananas, apples and cashew nuts, there is only one nut to each fruit, I will never complain about the cost of cashew nuts again. We drove out to the countryside on a road that was more potholes than road. The animals look half starved and everything was covered with red dust. The children either ride or walk to school, we saw many walking with no shoes. We arrived at the chnhouk mountain and cave and climbed then descended into the caves. Here we found monkeys and bats and a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva that was built in the 7th century. We then drove about an hour to Kep where ... read more

Geo: 10.4959, 104.307On leaving Ha Tien in Vietnam I cycled to the Cambodian border which doesn't take me long as its only around 10km away, it was beautiful cycling along the coast for my last views of Vietnam which I have enjoyed immensely. From Lao Cai and the Sapa Valley with its hill tribes, the bustling city of Hanoi, Halong Bay's impressive limestone sea stacks and many islands, down through the mountains via the Ho Chi Minh Trail through huge limestone rocks, massive caves and lush green paddies. Hue and the French Colonial town of Hoi An was very pretty, before heading down to Nha Trang with stunning sea views and white beaches along the way. I went back into the HCM trail to Kon Tum and the Rong Houses which were impressive before travelling onto ... read more
