Up at 5.30am pick up at 7am from Hotel transfer to Airport flight to Heho. Breakfast packed for us by the hotel. Boiled egg and cheese sandwiches. Our lighters were confiscated but someone had a lighter in the smoking room. Flight was supposed to be 8.45am but at 8.30am everyone must have been on so we left. Croissant, cake, chocolate and a coffee served, not bad for a 1hr flight. Picked up by T2 ( Nyi Nyi Tun)and the driver Mr Shwa and 1hr drive to Pindaya very interesting a lot of farming of corn, Sweet Peas, Potatoes, Tomatoes, very rich soil. Stopped at a local store where they gave us a taste of pickled tea, passed bullocks carts and a lot of Chinese Buffulos. People still farm manually with bullocks. As you may recall, Yangon was my first stop on my Myanmar journey, but I left after only one full day because Bagan beckoned. I'm now back in Yangon. What a journey this has been. Arriving Back At Yangon I flew from Mandalay to Yangon on Wednesday, September 20th. As this was my last stop in Myanmar, I decided to splurge a little on a three star hotel. I chose the Hotel Grand United on 21st Street. Since this was the low season, the room price wasn't too bad at US$40 per night. It started pouring the minute I landed at Yangon airport. The taxi ride into town was in heavy rain, and it persisted until the late afternoon. Thankfully, this hotel's wifi was quite decent, so I watched Netflix while waiting for the rain to ... read more

I trekked in rebel territory. But, before we go there, I shall regale you with a woeful tale of my planning fail. The Planning Fail As you may recall from my last entry, I flew south from Mandalay to Heho, my jumping off point for Inle Lake. I had initially intended to go to Kalaw from Heho Airport to do a three day trek from there to Inle Lake, but I changed my mind because it rained most of my last full day in Mandalay and I realized I did not want to deal with rain and mud for three days. As it turned out, it did rain a fair bit during the three days I was at Inle Lake. But, this decision left some slack in my schedule. While I was at Ostello Bello in ... read more

Getting to Inle I asked Win Aung to drive me to Mandalay Airport to catch my flight to Heho, the closest airport to Inle Lake. I told him that my flight was at 10am and he said he would pick me up at 8.30am. I trusted he knew what he was doing, so I happily hopped into his car when he showed up the next morning. I did not realize how far out of town Mandalay Airport was. After 35 minutes in the car - one hour to departure - there was still no sign of the airport. I hadn't even spotted any directional signs. I grew concerned and I asked him how much longer it was to the airport. He said 20 minutes. Yikes. That would get me there 35 minutes before departure. It then ... read more

On The Road Boat To Mandalay To get to Mandalay, I took a boat up the Ayeyarwady River on a ten hour trip north departing Bagan at stupid o'clock. At 4am, I stumbled out of bed, showered, packed, and met my pre-booked driver who took me to the pier at Nyaung U in time for my 5am check in at the boat. The boat departed at 5.20am with just seven passengers. This is one upside of traveling during the low/wet season - empty hotels and tourist transport. The top deck of the boat was comfortably laid out with rattan deck chairs. We each had lots of space to ourselves. After setting off from Bagan, I watched the sunrise over the Ayeyarwady, then I settled in for the long ride, observing the riverside communities and other boats ... read more

I spent four fantastic days in Bagan Lara Croft-ing (i.e., exploring temples. Lots of them). But, before I talk about these temples, let me tell you about two unexpected things I did: 1. I stayed in a hostel and I loved it. 2. I rented an e-bike. Hosteling? Me? Ahmar, the UCLA MBA alumnus I had been put in touch with, told me he had booked at Ostello Bello Hostel in Bagan, and that it came highly recommended. When I set out in this trip, I had resolved to not stay in dorms because I am a light sleeper and I was wary about sharing rooms with partying twentysomethings. My past experiences with hostels over 20 years ago weren't too favorable - they were primarily crash pads for people who stumbled in at all hours. At ... read more

When I left off on my last entry, I was feeling fatigued and unsure if I could sustain this travel. After Australia, I went to Singapore for four days. Family, friends, and food helped lift my spirits. A painful but much needed massage helped relax my weary muscles and joints. And, I had an unexpected boost to my post-travel job prospects. With all this happening, I got my spring back and I felt ready to tackle Myanmar! First Impressions of Yangon I landed in Yangon mid-afternoon on Monday September 4th. After stepping into an airport taxi, I realized something didn't feel right. It took me about ten minutes before I figured out what was wrong: almost all the steering wheels I saw were on the right... and the cars drive on the right. I asked the ... read more

We reached our final destination on this trip Inle lake. After stranded for hours at the train station in Kalaw, we made it very late in Inle. Normally a three hours ride which departed in Kalaw at 1:15 pm but departure time change twice, so we stuck in train station for hours and there’s no food or drink vendors at the station and having our luggage in hand is not an option to walk away, so I asked my partner to stay with the luggage and I walk to the center to get some food and drinks. I was on time when I came back, we could buy the ticket. They only sell tickets 30 minutes before departure. Ticket price between Kalaw and Inle cost 1150 kyats in tourist class carriage. Trains in Myanmar are not ... read more
