Today we’re heading to the site where the northern end of the Burma-Thailand Death Railway ended, in Thanbyuzayat. Myo tells us that on the way, he wants to take us to see the largest cave near Hpa-An. He confidently assures us it will take half an hour to get there, and there are not too many steps. It takes 20 minutes to reach a dirt track, and another 30 minutes to make our way excruciatingly slowly down the track until finally, we have to get out and walk because the throng of vehicles is too great. Myo tells us we need to walk in flip-flops as we’ll need to remove our shoes once at the cave, as it is also a temple. That is much too far for David to manage without his boots, so Sara ... read more

6.30am and it’s a perfect temperature on the balcony of our little cottage. The sun is rising behind the jagged ridge of the sheer cliff that is Mount Zwegabin. Pilgrims apparently climb to the tiny pagoda at the top, via a route that is invisible and appears impossible. We decide to give this a miss upon discovering that it it is a steep climb going up 3000 feet and taking 3 hours, with just one stall selling water on the way up, and the risk of attack by marauding macaque monkeys. After a leisurely breakfast, Myo picks us up. We go to visit the local market in Hpa-An. Hpa-An is the capital of Karen state, and the Karen were involved in one of the vicious insurgencies fought between the various tribes and the Burmese junta in ... read more

An early start today, on our way to Hpa-An in Karen state, to the south east of Yangon near the border with Thailand. We crawled interminably through the Yangon rush hour, with ample time to take a rough census showing that well over 80% of all vehicles are Toyotas. We stopped to see - we thought – the iconic gate at which Aung San Suu Kyi had talked to the public during her many years of house arrest. Alas, the bamboo fence has long since been replaced by a concrete wall topped with barbed wire, and all that remains is a new gateway with flags and a picture of her father Aung San and a police sentry box. After well over an hour slowly working our way through the suburbs, we reached the immaculately maintained Taukkyan ... read more

Our Emirates car dropped us at Gatwick in plenty of time to get into the Lounge to watch Everton v. Leicester on Sky. Unfortunately we arrived before the check in opened! But the staff soon arrived, probably having realised that David needed to get in front of the TV and also needed a glass of champagne. Anyway as it happened we got to the Lounge to watch the second half when Everton were already 2 0 down and that is how it ended. More champagne and some smoked salmon and dinner was the only response to that. The Emirates 380 business class is amazing, a ridiculous amount of space, flat bed, 21” TV and iPad and your own minibar.......most enjoyable, and it's no wonder BA is losing customers. Having already eaten dinner we went straight to ... read more

Nyaung Shwe town Today is my first day off I should have had more days like this. I woke around 7 and was up and around the town by 7:30 visiting the market to buy a couple of t-shirts and a pair of velvet flip-flops. I also found a length on fabric which is Thai or Indonesian batik cotton to replace the sarong which is my last one from 30 years ago. I returned to the hotel to have breakfast and as it was 8:15, almost everything was finished but they made sausage, bacon and bread and then I was surprised to be given pancakes honey and fruit. Tomorrow I will remember not to have breakfast just the pancakes with fruit and honey. A couple of hours later I returned to town thinking I would just ... read more

Inle I am not sure what time we arrived at Shwenyaung but it was 7:30 at the cottage on the lake. The taxi to the jetty in town was about half hour then it was an hour to the far south in an open boat with little wooden armchairs for seats. For approximately half the distance the sun was going down then we arrived in darkness. I have already spent an hour admiring the room. It is actually a chalet on stilts over the water. I get the feeling that Myanmar has so much variety that you would never be able to know it as a country, just one small part. Now that travelers are going into new areas it would be interesting to see if they are different again from the familiar ones. 28th October ... read more

Yuyu and I went to the station in Kalaw together in the taxi. It turned out it was the boss of the trekking company, A1, and he had bags for 2 others who had been on an overnight trek and boarded at Myindaik as was planned for me. When we got there, the down train, to Thazi, was pulling out. She told me it takes 35 minutes from Myindaik so we would have over an hour's wait. That is the nature of trains here. At least the trains run to serve the people unlike the delays on British trains. The timetable is up on the wall but the train stopped at any point if people want to put things on it or get off. A bell rings about 10 minutes before the train comes and you ... read more

Kalaw. 26th October The hotel has intermittent WiFi so fingers crossed I'll get some use. The 9 hours predicted on the bus was less than 7 as it was full soon after leaving Bagan, we even had a half hour lunch stop. Many of the passengers were tourists going to Kalaw or on to Taungii. I'm feeling dizzy and nauseous but it's not surprising as the last 2 hours were over mountains with constant switch backs. If I don't travel well normally, what chance do I stand here? The guide for tomorrow was at the hotel to greet me and discuss the route for trekking. It is 4 hours up and down mountains. Even before coming away I wondered whether I'd cope and my itinerary said only 3 hours! I cancelled it, what a woos, ... read more

After some extra sleep following another early wake up (I was up 5 till 7) I debated whether to aim for Old Bagan, a couple of hours pedalling, or just hang about the hotel till the sunset boat. Win, the taxi driver who took me to see sunrise, was outside. We’d agreed to leave at 4:30 to use his friend's boat, now we are going an hour earlier to see the temples in Old Bagan first. Win and the hotel staff have been asking around but we can't find others to share the cost. About 11 I took the bike just 10 minutes along the main road (less traffic, go figure!). The main temple was Gubyaukgyi with no photos allowed inside. It was damaged in the earthquake last year. There were many people including a tour ... read more

I started my morning at 4:30 having booked a taxi to take me to Ko Mauk Lake where they have built one of the new viewing platforms. It actually faced West hence we were the only ones there. First views were of temples illuminated in the dark but getting into the area was rather disorientating and I’m unable to name which they were. Of course it was dark and best for me, full of wildlife, a squirrel insects and many birds. Win, the driver knew the names, Later my guide Nang told me that books on these are very expensive. It was amazing to see how close all the temples are although it is not easy to go between them as there are areas of scrub and the tracks / paths twist and turn and end ... read more
