Random thoughts /memories of the beach -how warm the water is in the morning when the fisher men come in -the stingray they had this morning that they divided for all the men to have a portion - the division of the small catch on the tarps for the crew with some for the older folks standing about -the thanka on the faces of the women and the children -the wonderful lobster we ate last night for $20 -the line of the boat lights on the sea at night .There are 40 that sail our cove home but somewhere between 100-200 on this part of the coast -the idea that across the water is Pondicherry where I spent time 5 years ago .I think I have swum in all the Northern Hemisphere sea/oceans except the Arctic ... read more

This holiday within a holiday has been good . I have had seafood twice a day since we arrived . By the hotel there are 3 little beach restaurants where we generally eat lunch and have our happy hour . I have had the most amazing barracuda ...the skin lightly seasoned and although I was initially not eating it after the first bite I quickly consumed the rest. The tempura they serve , either seafood or vegetable , is light and tasty as well . We generally have a salad but are getting a bit tired of the dressing that they use . The peanuts in it are good but there is something else there that I am tired of ..it is also in the avocado salad . I would just like an ordinary sliced tomato!! The ... read more

Wow! have we ever lucked out !! We are at the beach staying at the Yoma Cherry Resort , a government hotel that is absolutely lovely . At $120/night it is our splurge and our holiday within a holiday . Our room looks onto the beach and has double glass doors as well as shutters if one desires the sound of the waves rather than the sight . We have our own lounges out side the doors on the teak deck or walk 20 feet take 3 steps down and we are on the beach !! Wow!! We are in the main building which has the restaurant terrace , where breakfast is served , and a bar as well as a second floor observation deck/room .There are only 5 rooms in this building 3 facing the ... read more

I now have a travel companion - a woman I met in Yangon. This is desirable in Myanmar, as there are almost no hostels or dorm rooms - tourism has not developed to this point yet - so the only option for accommodation is guesthouses. Most guesthouses only offer double rooms, so if you travel alone your accommodation charges are double. It's also not the easiest place to travel - not dangerous, just chaotic - so it's nice to have company. Pyay is pleasantly devoid of tourists at this time of year - we only saw one other Western couple in the time we were here. There is not a lot going on - it is a quiet university town sitting on the river, has a handful of restaurants, a small market and a small temple, ... read more

The new place was great as well , I never enjoyed the last place due to losing all of my body fluids but now I was 80% recovered and ready to enjoy this amazing part of the country. The beaches were amazing , just so quiet and clean , there is a polluiton problem in Asia but in Burma there is no industry to pollute the the country , the bay of Bengal is vast and nothing influences it pollution wise . Again this was a quiet hotel with the guests being mainly Burmese but a few foreigners were there to be seen which sort of dissapointed me a little, I enjoyed being the novelty up till now . The hotel restaurant was basic but the food was good , better than the last place I ... read more

This place was very basic but very charming . It is a place used by the Burmese as a resort and the small chalets were just about right for a couple , I was off course alone but it was the ideal size . The Burmese however used them to the fully capacity and it is amazing how many people you can fit into them thinkgs , I think 11 was the most I counted piling out of one chalet one morning ! I had a nice 2 days just exploring and enjoying the Bay of Bengal. I wanted to go diving but it was not possible due to some law and the only way to dive here was to go to Thailand and dive up to the Burmese border, sounded like to much like hard ... read more

This country is amazing , it really is the place that time forgot . Everywhere downtown are people sitting at tables with telephones with cables 10´s of meters long connecting them to the nearest telephone socket , people come along make a phone call and chuck a few coins in a tin then carry on , no cell phones here ( well there is one network for the extreme rich) and no telephone booths either . The vehicles are mostly all 30 years plus old and the pavements nearly non existent. No tall skyscrapers and no flashing neon lights. The men wear a sarong , which is like a wrap around skirt with Buddhist monks everywhere to be seen. Auntie S. took me for breakfast to her local favourite foodhall and we ate at 9 am a nice ... read more

Sat Jan 12 2013 Last full day at Ngapali Beach. It' s surprising how many adventures we can experience at a beach where "there's really nothing to do"!Today we walked along beach toward south. When we came to the spot where the river meets the sea, we thought we could just wade across, but it was deeper and faster moving than we first thought. Sure enough, a boy came along in a small boat and for a couple hundred KT he poled us across; then we carried on walking along beach. Had pleasant lunch at a basic eatery on the beach, then rode Motorola-taxi back (like a motorcycle with a large cab attached). We crowded in with about 4 other passengers, along with a large basket of fish and shells to stink up cab!Nap. Talked with ... read more

Thur jan 10 2013 Biked today to town of Thandwe - 1 hour! Had decent lunch of fried rice with pork/chicken and vegetables in a very basic eatery where we were the only foreigners. Instead of facing the long ride home, R negociated with pedicab driver, who then strapped our bikes to the sides of the truck and we rode home in 15 min! Naps have become a daily routine, especially at restful spots like Ngapali Beach. Tonight we walked 45 min to a restaurant called Moonlight, that R had read about. Good cocktails: rum sour and gin sour, both with lots of lime and orange. dinner good. R had king prawns; I had pork satay. Waitress who looked about 12, is chef's sister. Served us complimentary dessert of flaming plantain banana- not like our sweet ... read more

We flew into Thandwe airport, on October 8th. Peering out the window of the plane, we saw only water until just the moment before landing. We considered this good sign, and we were right. Ngapali beach is honey moon we’ve been waiting for. Psyched to be out of the big cities, but remaining in a strong Burmese culture has been fantastic. After settling into our beach chairs, at our $35/night non-resort, we promptly bought a coconut from the ladies on the beach (think ice cream man on the Jersey shore, but with fruit baskets on heads rather than carts). The women waited patiently as we drank our coconut water, and then chopped open our coconut for us so that we could enjoy the fruit inside. Having eaten fresh seafood every night, we decided to check out ... read more
