it was our last day in serengeti. our mission: cheetah hunting. we drove about an hour from our hotel to enter a different section of the park where cheetahs are known to frequent. in this area of the park you are allowed to drive off-road. we start driving through the plains and circling the kopjes, or rock formations, that are common in serengeti. these rocks are often hangouts of lions, where they are often found basking in the sun. we drove for hours. nada. to give you an idea of the size of serengeti, it's roughly the size of england. and here we are trying to find the fastest, and one of the most elusive, animals in nature. "it's like trying to find a cheetah in the serengeti" should be the expression. finally after circling another ... read more

They may not be the Morocco you wanna see, but still, at some point, you'll have to come over here. In my case, I needed visas to Mauritania. Invaluable 'Africa on a Shoestring' told me to swap Fes for Rabat on a Sunday afternoon and make it to the Mauritanian Embassy as early as Monday 9am. So did I. It was 8 something when I got off the bus and saw the big sign for the Souissi II University. It didn't look at all like an embassy! No problems! I hailed a cab and reached the CORRECT address in time to be directed to 'Casa' (Casablanca) where the visas were actually issued. Again, no problems! I gladly went back to the city centre. There was some interesting sightseeing to be done. Impressive Tour Hassan, built to ... read more

So, the first day when I have arrived here in Zimbabwe, I made a call back to Zambia to check on the status on of my work permit. The answer that was given to me was that it was almost ready and that I should check back tomorrow. So I spent the day doing a blitz tour of Harare, quickly getting a small feel for Zimbabwe and then the next day, with my bag packed, I gave a call to Zambia. But when I asked them which bus I should take back, they said it wasn’t quite ready and that I should call back again tomorrow. No problem I thought, I get another day to explore the city in a bit more depth. So that’s what I did and the next day, again with a full ... read more

We decided to go on a one day tour of Tanger, Morocco. It´s a 35 minute ferry ride over the Gibraltar strait, and a one day tour including transportation and lunch was 40 euros. On the bus from our hotel in Algeciras to Tarifa, where the ferry launches from, we met the Posadas. A very nice family from Mexico City, they were traveling through Spain with their children, Dan and Karina who were couple years younger than Nedim and I. We stuck w/ them for the most of the tour, and I really apreciated having someone I could speak English to. Tanger is very poor, but people everywhere seemed to be working on fixing up their stores and houses, and making things that they could sell to tourists. They are very aggressive salesman and if you ... read more

Welcome to Fes! You see this impressive blue and green tiled door? This is Bab Bou Jeloud. The entrance to Fes el-Bali. The Old Fes. It's Tuesday, 4pm. It's pretty dusty. Two hotels to the right. One, fully booked. The other, expensive. Now, turn right. Walk down. Hotel Lamrani. Little silver haired Mohammed says hello. Put your bags down. You've got a place to sleep and take a (cold) shower. Back in the streets. People don't stop. People drink. People shout. People run. People watch people. People talk to people. Close your eyes. Smell the spices. Can you hear the muezzins' prayer calls? Sip your mint tea - slowly!!!! it's pipping hot. The hustlers bring you back to reality. You have to say 'La shukran' (No, thanks) and escape them! Quickly. You have to get lost! ... read more

well... we didn't have an auspicious start to our adventures in egypt... having finally succumbed to my first bout of food poisoning I spent a very miserable few hours in the middle of the night flying over libya vomiting into an aeroplane toilet bowl while dave extolled the many virtues of Egyptair cuisine! thankfully when we arrived in cairo we had our hostel picking us up so we went straight to bed and i continued to enjoy the constant companionship of a clean toilet! so cairo wasn't the best start but it was only the first day... Our second day in Cairo i was determined to see the pyramids so armed with lots of water and dry bread we set out (intrepid adventurers that we were - we took a taxi from the hostel!) However we ... read more

So here I am. No longer roaming through beautiful Canada. No longer working every waking moment through the entire UK. I AM IN CAIRO!!! Arriving at the first stop in the big adventure was daunting, the fact that it was the middle of the night was a mere inconvenience. Looked for my pre-arranged driver named Ahmed that would hopefully be looking for me as well. Sounds easier than it really was. There must have been at least 10 other guys that grabbed my hand, "I have taxi for you" "No no Miss, not him, I have cheaper price for pretty lady" And then at the end of the line, there he was. Phew- task one is over with, now let's get out of this airport! Ever lost your car in a parking lot? It wasn't the ... read more

Here's some first impressions and how my time in Ghana started out :) 11 EWB short term volunteers arrived in Accra, the capital of Ghana around 7 at night on Sunday May 8. That was exactly 24hrs after we had left our hostel in Toronto for the airport. (We had a 7 hr layover in Amsterdam). First Impressions? It was dark hot and humid! The hot and humid I had expected, but the dark, I hadn’t expected that at all, but it makes sense, being so close to the equator it gets dark between 6 and 6:30. The long term volunteers met us at the airport. It was really good to be met, I think we would have been fairly lost otherwise! We got some cabs to take us to our hostel/guest house. And then went ... read more
