Geo: -21.1736, 47.7088The rain forest!! Wow!!! We arrived at night after a 4hr journey along probably the bumpiest road in the world! It was like a roller coaster! When I woke up in the morning I gasped on seeing the view from the door. In front of me stood huge mountains covered in lush green forest. It was magical. I just couldn't believe it! We headed off for Parc National de Ranomofana, said to be the best place to see the lemurs. Our driver knew a guide (our driver knew lots of people!!) and off we went into the depths of the forest. Every plant seemed to have some kind of medical use. After about an hr we saw our first lemur, a tiny little brown thing. It was adorable. The only problem was that for ... read more

We started in Maputo with an altercation. Our pre-arranged pick-up was not there to meet us and I had no Mozambican money to make a call. When I explained the situation a taxi driver offered me the use of his mobile phone. Having made the call (about 30 seconds) I decided to repay his friendly gesture by giving him my remaining SA money - only about 60p. Suddenly this was not good enough and he insisted on getting a pounds worth - which he already knew I didn’t have. He got quite agitated and when our lift came we left with him shouting through the windows at us but still refusing the 60p. We were pleased to find that Maputo Backpackers is a large whitewashed building in a quiet area outside the city centre. Just down ... read more

I thought it might be valuable for everyone to gain an appreciation for Zambian domestics but it seemed an overwhelming task since the term “family life” is about as close to nuclear as Canada is tropical. Canada itself, with the divorce rate at approximately 50%, has experienced major paradigm shifts in the past fifty years in the traditional definition. Add a fatal pandemic infecting between 20-30% of the population, intermarriage between 72 tribes in Zambia alone that haven’t always lived in harmony, and a dash of traditional social norms mostly absent in North America and you have the recipe for a distinctly different family milieu than Kevin Arnold experienced in those Wonder Years. There are countless other factors contributing to various family models here but overall, it’s safe to say that the typical in Canada does ... read more

Geo: -18.9201, 47.5237Madagascar has become my most favourite place in the world (sorry China!) with my most favourite people in the world living there! It is paradise! Sweet little houses, mountains, rainforest, cuddly lemurs, palm trees, perfect weather, desert and palm trees all in one. It's a world of its own. And the Madagascans are even better than the lemurs! Lots of waves and smiles and an amazing warmth. I went there to visit a long term penpal, Domoina. It was a bit of a gamble and Rebecca had already planned many escape plans but it couldn't possibly have been better. I just couldn't believe it had all worked out so perfectly.I've never been anywhere like Antananarivo, more easily known as 'Tana.'. It is a grotty higgelty piggeldy mess in the most wonderful way possible. Flying ... read more

Damn it...I just tried to post a good, long post but lost it somewhere in cyberspace. So this will be shorter than it's supposed to be, but hopefully it'll say what it needs to. So I leave Cape Town in a few days...it's been a really interesting experience, and though it hasn't been perfect it's been a learning process the whole time. Uhm...yeah, so since I don't feel like rewriting this all over again, I'm just going to say that I'll tell better stories the next time i see/talk to you guys, and I'm looking forward to being home (or whatever best approximates home for the time being). Love and such BernieBear... read more

Lep pozdrav iz Maroka. Najprej opravicilo, ker bodo napake, ampak tale arabska tipkovnica ima drugace postavljene crke. Po dolgi voznji preko Sevile do Tarife sva se ze zvecer odlocila, da preckava Gibraltar in piciva v Maroko. S ful hitrim colnom smo preleteli ozino in se znasli v Afriki. Prvi vecer sva se z dvema Italijanoma nasla sobo in zaceli smo okusati afriske care. Cari so bili najprej zelo podobni ciganiji, ampak ker sem bil ze v Indiji, tu ni bilo nic posebnega. Razen Nataliji, ker je bila njena prva izjava: Jaz grem domov. Ampak ni panike. Se je ze skoraj navadla. Tukaj zivijo po mojem okusu. Pozno vstanejo, malo delajo, dolgo lenarijo in pozno hodijo spat. Cele dneve presedijo pred cajnicami in srkajo metin caj ter kavo. Edini problem je, ker je meni najljubsa pijaca - ... read more

Boy oh boy is the story different in Maputo than it is in DC. The policies that I have been forming opinions on just ain't the same once you get outside of the beltway, let along the continent. We spent ages in Maputo. A month to be exact. That makes two months and just over three hundred miles. We are not exactly zipping along. But it was worth it to sit in Maputo for a bit and soak up all that we didn't know. Turns our the Millennium Challenge Account has "been an embarrassment" and the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief has been a "grand success." Who would have thought it? Certainly not me, sitting in DC. Sure, there were indications one way or another, but it really clarifies matters to talk to the folks ... read more

Hi everyone, I know it's been a while since I've emailed. We just returned from Durban/St. Lucia, where we had little to no phone/email access. So much has happened since I last wrote, so I don't know if I can give everything credit here. I won't try to, so next time I talk to everyone, I'll tell better stories :). It seems like weeks since I've been in CT. Most of the past week we spent in the small rural community of Hlabisa, where we did a short homestay, and on safari in St. Lucia. Most of what I said before about the trip still stands - it was such a strange divide between Hlabisa and going on a safari. It was all so interesting and fun though. So my homestay "granny" was Gloria Mangele, who ... read more

Africa » Djibouti August 1st 2005

X tells me “Djibouti” is French for “tiny, expensive, hot, steaming pile”. I admire conciseness in a language. Night. Somewhere in the desert between Hargeisa and Djibouti. A couple of huts selling food. I am in full power-saving mode, stretched out on the tarp with my daypack under my head, eyes tightly shut and not a single muscle moving, even though I know there’s no time to sleep, even if I could manage to. My fellow-passengers are finishing up their meals and are assuming similar rest positions. X is somewhere to my left, taking full advantage of his Frenchness and talking to the really cute fellow-passenger (whom I saw first!). She’s telling him that she’s married to a French legionnaire who promised he would take her to France when his term expires in 2 years. The ... read more
