This will be short as the internet is particuarly slow today and unknown to me the internet is closing early today so i will be cut off very sooon. The week following my Malaria outbreak was pretty chilled. I took th rest of the week off to recover as i was still pretty dizzy and ridicuously tired, as in falling asleep on the toilet and in a taxi. embarassing. Anyways. My aim was to rest and relax but at times this was tired as almost half the village, all the teachers and many of my fellow obrunis wished to visit me. This was a lovely thought yet very tiring and at times frustrating. But i am completley recovered thanks ... read more

Bring it on. After an early morning breakfast we said goodbye to the hippos and headed out to Kruger Park, only 5 minutes down the road. We entered Kruger via the Paul Kruger enterance and before we even entered the park we spotted animal tracks in the river. It is winter in South Africa and all of the rivers in the park are completely dry. Needless to say we made a bathroom stop at the enterance for fear of what would be awaiting us outside if nature called before we reached our camp. Needless to say nature was waiting for us at the bathrooms where a few warthogs were happily awaiting our arrival. On to the park - with our feet barely through the gate we encountered our first herd of Impalas crossing the road. ... read more

Waiting for my flight that is due to happen in less than 4 hours now seems like waiting for a time bomb to go off.. It's inevitable.. and you don't want it to happen.. What's happened to all the homesickness?? Yes.. I'm still homesick.. and I can't wait to get home.. maybe i'm just sad that all this is going to end... Went out to tour the Cape Peninsular yesterday.. it was a blast!! Rented a car with Ryan and Steve from the overland bus.. and we drove down the coastal road of Cape Town and then the peninsular.. it's so beautiful out there! Many of you have been asked the following question by me: "Given a choice, would you choose to live in some scenic mountains, maybe with a nice stream and waterfall if you ... read more

Well, my trip thus far has been interesting to say the least. Right now, at 4:15 in the morning, I find myself trying to fix a paper (my very last undergrad essay) that I turned in a couple days before I left for South Africa. The problem started on Tuesday when I check my final grade for the 2 credit indepent study class that I was taking spring quarter. The only requirement for two credits was that I had to write an 8-10 page essay by the end of the quarter. Unfortunately, the teacher suspected that I was guilty of plagarism and gave me an incomplete grade for the two credits... Because of this, I am two credits short of graduatin in the spring and have until July 20th to fix the problem or else ... read more

So last time I wrote it was the day before we were due to start our Kili climb. We had all our gear checked and packed, provisions bought and were geared up for 6 days on the mountain....then disaster, I woke up in the middle of the night before our climb vomiting. I hoped it would be gone by the morning but I was a complete wreck the next day, barely able to make it out of the bedroom let alone start hiking up a mountain! Then later the same day Suzanna was struck down too. So there we both were, lying in our hotel room which had a lovely view of the mountain just to make us feel even better! We hoped it would pass in 24hours and that we could still make the climb, ... read more

Tamba-SegouTom Griffith According to the United Nations, Mali is the third poorest country in the world. Now, I'm not sure how they come up with these rankings (it tells you here), but as someone from the third richest country, it sure feels poor to me. So how do Malians manage to be so open and friendly? I don't know. And why did the guy in the shop I just popped into, offer me some of his lunch? Again, I don't know. But Malians do have a reputation for being nice folks, and so far I haven't been disappointed - apart, perhaps, from the super-pushy touts and hassle-mongers of Segou. But more on them later. Mali's poverty stems from a variety of complex causes, but basically it comes down to two: colonialism and the envi... read more

Not much to say about this city. Next destination is Malawi but it's a long drive from Gweru so we stopped off for a night in the capital city. It was certainly interesting driving through, and wondered why soo many police checks along the way - later found out a planned assasination of President Mugabe was foiled.....exciting stuff. The main mode of transport around these parts is foot or bicycle as petrol is unaffordable for the majority. It is also possible to hitch a ride on the back of a truck or ute. People line the sides of the roads trying to sell what little produce they grow to support families. Inflation is terribly out of control and in the one week we were here, some everyday common products rose 300% alone. It is certainly ... read more
