I just managed to get the last few blogs from Ethiopia on the site, so go backwards and find the ones you have not read. I am sorry, but I could only get 2 pictures to load onto the internet. Maybe I can catch up later with more pictures. There was not enough fuel to travel today, but we have fuel for tomorrow. That means I will get out of the city to see some of the countryside. Harare is just like any other city, except there are great shortages of goods. I went shopping in their department stores and the perfume cases contained one or two bottles. This was very strange to see. This city seems very much like those in the states, except, whites who live and work here stand out. More on that ... read more

Hello everyone, I am sorry I have gone so long without blogging, but when I was in Addis I had no time, but now that I have gotten to Harare, there are difficulties with the internet. I have written some blogs that I will post when I have better internet access from my last fews days in Ethiopia, but quickly I will give you a overview of Harare. ( I don't want to lose my connection) Already, we have noticed the political situation here. We have a arranged state visit and everything is very scripted. We are supposed to travel to a rural hospital, but there is a fuel shortage, so we don't know if we will be able to go. The internet is spotty at best and today I finally found a computer that connected. ... read more

So, the first day when I have arrived here in Zimbabwe, I made a call back to Zambia to check on the status on of my work permit. The answer that was given to me was that it was almost ready and that I should check back tomorrow. So I spent the day doing a blitz tour of Harare, quickly getting a small feel for Zimbabwe and then the next day, with my bag packed, I gave a call to Zambia. But when I asked them which bus I should take back, they said it wasn’t quite ready and that I should call back again tomorrow. No problem I thought, I get another day to explore the city in a bit more depth. So that’s what I did and the next day, again with a full ... read more

So, I'm still here in Zim, drinking a hot cup of tea because the African winter is just settling in and believe it or not, it’s cold enough that I can see my breath in the mornings. I remain in exile from under the information that my Zambian work permit "should be ready tomorrow". However this is the exact same information that I was told when I was deported so I am now defining the term "tomorrow" as being sometime between now and when I have to return to Canada around Christmas time. But, being given the chance to experience life here in Harare during what could be seen as a "crisis" time. Crisis being a very relative term because the situation has moved from horrible to unbearable as seen through the lens’s of many local ... read more

The last country on the itinerary during this wonderful trip to Southern Africa is Zimbabwe; formerly known as the bread basket of the region but now a country devastated by a collapse of the farming sector, chronic shortages of food and fuel, hyperinflation and massive levels of unemployment. Tourism levels have also plummeted in recent years due to instability and violence, but as a humble blogger I will leave further political comment to the politicians, and simply share as always my travel experiences. The previous journal left off in Livingstone, constant reader, on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. I farewelled most of the safari group, and went to the Zim border where I had to fork out a hefty 50 smackaroos in order to secure a visa for the country. Oh well, I lined up ... read more

Hey guys. Just thought we'd share some of our earlier (pre-blog) travel pictures. This is where we (Theresa and Dave) met, way back in October of 2004. Zimbabwe, despite the ongoing political problems and financial situation, is a counrty that remains close to our hearts. We love the people and the landscapes of what we think, is one of Africa's gems! ... read more

The train from Bulawayo to Vic Falls was ok, nothing flash, just two small bunks in a very small room, an unlockable door and a window blind that kept shooting up. Still, it made a change from having to drive on the truck all that way. We arrived at Vic Falls at 7am, tired and hungry, to find that bread wasn't available anywhere in town that day. We had a great, but expensive, time there. I went on an amazing microlight flight above the falls, we both did the "Sundowner Cruise" and watched the falls from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian side, getting really wet in the process. We also bought more souvenirs and sent more parcels back to NZ. The falls are really impressive, especially now as the river is about full. They fall into ... read more

Harare was a great city, suddenly really civilised! We went to the movies a couple of times as they were only 35c US. At that price it doesnt matter if the movies are rubbish! We both saw 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding', Colin went to see 'XXX' while I saw 'Below'. We went round the National Art Gallery, some good works, most of them up for sale, and a room full of old tribal works from drums and baskets to axes and masks. None of this stuff was for sale, although you could buy replicas in the shop. That was about all we had time for, shame really, but we had better things to move on to. Next stop was Antelope Park, a private game reserve with a lion breeding program. We got to play with ... read more

The train to Vic Falls the next evening was pretty uneventful. One of the quietest sleepers I have taken anywhere - mostly because there were not really any stops I think, but if there were I didn't notice. We had a first class cabin for the two of us with just two beds in, and it only cost $5 each. It wasn't that luxurious though - the washbasin was a nice idea, but its use had been subverted somewhere along the years since the mirrors were made - the RR of Rhodesia Railways etched on them. In Vic Falls we arrived at 9am and walked through the town to the great backpackers - shoestring. Brian was a great host and barman and it was a great place to stay. We watched Arsenal win the FA cup ... read more
