We left Gweru for Bulawayo the next day. The bus station in Gweru was great - and it looked like you could get everything the lodge told us was unavailable right now because of the political situation in Zimbabwe - bread, gas etc. I wonder if it was illegal to buy bread on the black market? We caught a very loud bus back to Bulawyo - loud because of the local music blaring out of the home speakers installed at the front of the bus. The bus got us 90% of the way to Bulawayo before stopping seemingly because it had run out of gas. Luckily another bus stopped right away and picked up the Bulawayo-bound passengers. What happened to the people travelling further than Bulawayo on the bus I don't know - we left them ... read more

I left you all last in Bulawayo and we were just heading to Gweru to Antelope Park to see the Lion breeding center in the park. We got there by local combi which was no problem. Quite a few of the passengers were drinking lion lager on the way, but the driver wasn't as far as I could tell. We arrived in Gweru and waited at a local hotel for the pickup to take us to the park. The site was very beautiful - with little huts on the side of a river. Just a few hours after arriving I spotted some large cats being walked around the buildings and on closer inspection they turned out to be four 2 month old lions. We got to play with them the next lunchtime for half an hour ... read more

We got to the Translux bus station in Pretoria in plenty of time, but they didn't announce the bus over the tannoy, so we were left in the waiting room with a large Indian family from Durban who were heading to Harere for a brother's funeral. Their bus was very late and they were very worried about missing the event. We found out we had missed our bus about an hour after it had left and were told to get on the Harare bus and switch to our bus at the border. The Harare bus driver told us that the other bus would not wait at the border, but after talking to the guy behind the counter agreed to take us. If our bus wasn't at the border then we may be going to Harare. At ... read more

Well. We are back in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and feeling much more at home. The trip has been fantastic!!! Highlights? The Irish lads on our tour - a young barrister and a fabulously talented singer who has just signed a recording deal with Sony. Consequently we have been enjoying quality live music in the African bush. Look out for Owen Brady (unless he takes on a stage name) - he deserves to be the “next big thing.” The group we have been traveling with has been mixed and interesting. Besides the Irish lads, we’ve had a young South African lawyer, a grey haired I.T. man and his teenage son, a young farmer and his teacher wife, a firefighter, a travel agent, an adventure tour agent, a stockbroker, and a young I.T. couple. I’ve developed a taste ... read more

… first half of email lost … Cape Point at the southern tip of the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Aghulas (at the southernmost tip of Africa) were the geographical highlights. We hadn’t made any real plans for New Year’s and we were very fortunate to meet some folks on the beach who were having a New Year’s Eve party at their beach house only a few metres away. New Year’s Eve here is pretty much like it is anywhere else in the world with lots of drinking, hugging, kissing and well-wishing … except we were all at the beach wearing shorts and a t-shirt!!! We both managed to get a nice sunburn during the day (Ann’s very first sunburn ever … I was proud to be a part of it) and spent the next ... read more
