Good news and bad news! Good news is as above stated in the title.. bad news is that I won't be able to catch Mr Melvin Ng leaving for his Beijing posting in mid-June... Was initially thinking if i can't get the namibian visa, then i'd probably head south from Zambia to Zimbabwe and then straight into South Africa.. and then I'd probably arrive home somewhere before the 16th, when Mel will be flying off.. so looks like my return date is still set on the 26th.. Sorry Mel.. but i'd be visiting you some time in BJ i guess.. Huang Zong! After two long days on the road.. I'm now in Lusaka.. Crossing the Malawi-Zambian border is relatively ok.. but I think the Zambian officers are a bit more picky.. and can make things difficult.. ... read more

Happy Mothers Day to our Mom's Gilma and Darlene. We wish you were both here sharing this experience with us. On our way back from Victoria Falls this morning we picked up gifts from the local village people - that was pressure shopping like no other! The falls were in all their glory - blue sky, very high "smoke" from the off spray, double rainbows - beautiful!!! This is what David Livingstone had to say after is first sighting: "After twenty minutes' sail from Kalai we came in sight, for the first time, of the columns of vapor appropriately called 'smoke,' rising at a distance of five or six miles, exactly as when large tracts of grass are burned in Africa. Five columns now arose, and, bending in the direction of the wind, they seemed ... read more

Wow - another amazing place. The people really are very kind here and the hotel is beautiful. A short 5 minute walk from our room to the top of the falls. The river is running so high now that it looks like a giant plume of smoke from the spray of the waterfalls that you can see for miles away. We are having a good time playing with all of the monkeys that hang out side of our room waiting for Ben to come out to join them. We also see lots of Zebras wondering about. We went on a sunset cruise of the Zambezi River on the African Queen. It really was a sunset of a life time....stunning. We spotted waterbuck, hippos, crocks, impala and loads of birds. I met two separate gals on ... read more

Woa! Quest trip over! Feels like it flew by! It's been the most fantastic experience and if I could do it all again I would. SO what's happened in Zambia? We arrived at a place in Livingstone called Fawlty Towers backpackers on the 2nd May, where we were faced with SO many options of activities that are run around the falls (Livingstone is next to Victoria Falls). Unfortunatly due to unavoidable ATM trouble - in that NONE in Livingstone accepted my card, I could only do the one activity - the bungy! Still can't quite believe I did it! It took me a long time to take the plunge, alot of fretting on the edge was involved! It's the worst feeling having your feet so tightly bound and having to hop to the edge of an ... read more

Very short stay in Zambia, it also included a hop over the border to Zimbabwe for 1/2 a day to ride an elephant which was fantastic, we fed them too and saw very young ones too. The youngest was 2 months old and had been rescued when it's mum was separated from it by poachers. The main stop in Livingstone was the Victoria Falls which were awesome. We got soaked walking through them. but it was definitely worth it, cant wait 'til Niagara! then we got split up from the group we had been with all along to go to Jo'Burg with a new group. The others were mostly going to Nairobi. We went on another Game cruise but it was messy, our tour guide got thrown in and everyone got very drunk. A couple of ... read more

I suppose it’s time I introduce my home and host family. Chibote is a peri-urban village about 11 km outside of Kitwe - Zambia’s second biggest city and the location of ZATAC’s regional office. I met my host family, the Kalombwanas, through my work in the community with ZATAC. They have been incredibly welcoming to this naïve muzungu from Canada. The size of the Kalombwana family changes. A lot. There have been as few as six and as many as twelve of us living in the home. It has been a very new experience for me. I don’t think that I have ever lived in a home with more than three other people before, and that was with three other guys my own age in a home easily six times larger than our home here. ... read more

Do you remember that time when I mentioned that I lived in a city called Kitwe and worked for an organization called ZATAC? Yeah, so that’s not so accurate any more. It’s a fairly long and boring story, but basically the situation was that the EWB-ZATAC partnership on this project was such that EWB (i.e. me) wasn’t in a position to be able to add much value to the project. First, the project was struggling with a variety of factors beyond my (and in many cases, ZATAC’s) control. In addition, ZATAC was more interested in me playing more of a gap-filling as opposed to a value-added role, which is not EWB’s focus. It was an amicable break-up, though. I still keep in touch with my friends at ZATAC and will be taking a trip up ... read more

Thur 29th Packed the tent up with Dani for the last time and carried all my stuff to the new truck. Then everyone who hadn’t been to the falls yet got into a truck and went with minimal clothing and belongings as we got told everything got wet went to the falls. I love my waterproof camera for times like this. The falls were spectacular they are a mile and half across and you cant see the bottom as there is so much water going down it sprays back up so high that it rains from above and below. We went to the market outside the falls and you get bombarded with people trying to sell stuff. I ended up buying a giraffe for 4 dollars and a hair band! Back at the campsite we ... read more
