So to get along in Africa you have to have a really open mind and just go with the flow - my time in Europe was very beneficial for me in that nothing here bothers me - the bus that you're in just got stuck in the sand and you're 60 km out in the bush, no worries. Supposed to take blood pressure and don't know how, it's okay. Someone asking you to marry them, not today. Brave, one of the Zambians that I work with actually commented on that - I went with him and 17 others in a combi (which is really a stripped minivan, so it was a bit tight) out to a village to do community HIV education. Drive out 60 km, half of it over very bumpy/sandy ground, debate over the ... read more

The irony of writing this on a laptop while listening to music on an mp3 player is not lost on me, I'm using electronics worth more than most people here will earn this this decade. The unemployment rate is basically 100% - most people scrape by through creating their own enterprise - carpentry, roadside stands selling anything you could possibly imagine (the smell of freshly popped popcorn is one that I particularly enjoy), barbershops, etc. It's hard to describe what Zambia is like to someone who's never been here, much like it's hard to describe America to people here, there's just no frame of reference either way. So my typical day - I wake up early, 6:30 at the latest, slip out of my mosquito net and try not to wake my sleeping roommates. Off to ... read more

After our relaxing time spent on the lake it was time to hit the road again and next we were going to pick up a 5 day one way private trip which would take us all the way to Victoria Falls on the Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe borders via the South Luangwa National Park, and Lusaka in Zambia. It was going to be some very long driving but hiring our own vehicle was not an option and no other form of transport would take us to where wanted to go without resorting to local buses at each stage to take us to the National Park which would have at least added a couple of days to the trip which we just didn't have the time for. The tour was to be run by a German guy ... read more

Our flight from Dar, Tanzania, took us to Johannesburg again. We overnighted this time at Shoestrings Hostel which was great. Cheap, clean and the owner was really helpful, and it was close to the airport which is great for a quick overnight. The next day we flew to Livingstone, Zambia - the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. And there our real troubles began. We found out when we got off the airplane and were waiting in line at immigration that although the story is that Australian's don't need Visas, you actually need to have your accommodation prebooked so that you appear on a manifest. No name on manifest, no free visa. So although we had prebooked our accommodation that morning from Johannesburg, we didn't appear on the manifest because it is prepared 24 hours in advance. ... read more

Ive only been to Zambia once. I crossed at Victoria Falls check point, and went over to Livingstone. Watch your belongings keep it close by. The people of Zambia are amazing though, very helpful and friendly. The prices are very affordable but be sure to haggle with the local prices. The crossing at Victoria Falls is very easy and you can obtain your visa at the crossing for about usd $25 depends which border agent you get that day! There are lots of handicraft sales on the road leading to Livingstone be sure to pick up some of the Zambezi Teak wood pieces shaped into small animals and other shapes. Ive attached some photos.... read more

So after the adventorous day yesterday, and experiecing the river from above the Falls, i thought it was only appropriate to also experience the river as it winds itself between the two countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia through the gorge, and so rafting it was! Well, let me tell you the Zambisi at low waterlevels is a class 5 river and one of the 5 best rivers to raft in the world (not sure who rates this sort of things, but, i'll take the word for it . so , after hiking down to the Boiling point once again, we put our rafts in the water, and our guide Melvin instructed the "crew" which consisted of three German guys, another American girl, a local "guide in training" and myself ( had to say good bye to ... read more

After arriving in Livingstone the previous night, and setting out on a sunset cruise on the Zambisi River ( sunset cruises mean "booze cruise around here, since it is all you can drink , to get things started off right, i.e. get to see the river, some crocs, some hippos, and make some new friends, I ventured this morning via a hostel shuttle and with my new "travel partner" for the day Josh off to see the Falls. Josh and a number of other Americans who were on the cruise the night before are teaching english in Namibia for a year, and were visiting on their school holiday (just fyi)... just a few of the great people I met in Zambia, but more on that later... anyhow, back to the Falls!! Are they ever enormous, totally ... read more

Once in Malawi we headed for Kande beach on Lake Malawi where we spent several days. Very peaceful with beautiful country side. We also visited the Zomba plateu, a pine forest plantation. We stayed at a trout farm were it was freezing cold. As we had driven in we had noticed a beautiful cabin on the hillside. Having thought twice about spending two cold nights in a tent we asked at the farm and were told we could stay in the cabin. This turned out to be a good choice as it was beautiful with fantastic views and a bed. We spent the afternoons on the balcony watching the world go by. From Malawi we then crossed the border into Zambia. Our time in Zambia could be summed up by Luangwa National Park and Victoria Falls ... read more

Travelblog has had a computer crash, so I don't know exactly what I have posted up so far. So please excuse if you have read some of it already. 10-07-07 A quick shopping in Nanyuki (great baguette) and off we drove to lake Nakuru national park. We planed to camp just outside the gate at Mwbeha (2 Km from the gate and priced at KS 300 said the guide book) but were caught by surprise when the 2 Km turned out to be 12Km and the price was 3400 KS (about R340). We camped at the parking lot. This ought to be most expensive parking we have done so far in Africa. The drive to the camp turned out to be very challenging as the directions we were given did seem odd and the procedures at ... read more

Yesterday morning I went to Lubasi Children's home for the morning. It is an orphanage for children ages 5-12. When I got there the children were gardening. I talked to the director for a while to learn about the programs. Most of their parents passed away with complications resulting from AIDS. The orphanage was started by the catholic church and runs on the funding of the Livingstone community and other donors. The children have made tye-dye tablecloths for craft time to sell for fundraising. I started gardening with some of the children, and then they wanted to teach me how to play netball. I understanding the basic concept, but the language barrier made it difficult. Basically you have to throw the ball to your teammates and then toss it into a metal hoop, but if you ... read more
